SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

If you could use your hobby or special skills to make some extra money, why wouldn’t you? And that’s exactly what many people are doing these days, because, as we all know, sometimes your regular job just doesn’t cut it when it comes to paying the bills. Side hustles have become a big part of many people’s lives – and a big part of their incomes. According to a survey from Lending Tree, 44% of Americans have a side hustle, and 43% of those who do say it’s to help cover their living expenses. How much extra income are we talking about? 71% of people make $500 or less per month from their secondary income stream. 19% take home between $501 and $2,000. And I don’t know what these people are doing in their spare time, but 9% said they make more than $2,000 monthly from their extra work. So, what are the best paying side jobs? Most are web-based, such as website designer and video editor. The most popular? Those are drop-shipping, driving for ride-hailing apps, delivery driving, and recording voiceovers. Oh, and just because you have a second job, that doesn’t mean your main job stinks. 40% of those with a side hustle have household incomes of at least $100,000.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Jimmy Kimmel is officially a grandpa! The “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” host’s daughter Katie has welcomed her first baby with husband Will Logsdon. On his Tuesday show, Kimmel joked: “Her name, they gave her a very cute name. Her name is Melania.” He then added: “It’s Melania Thee Stallion…” His granddaughter’s real name is Patti Joan. Or, as he put it, Patti “like the melt, but with an ‘I’ not a ‘Y'”. The baby’s middle name, Joan, comes from his mother’s name. The comedian missed just his second show in 22 years on Monday to be there for his granddaughter’s birth.

The 2025 American Music Awards’ lineup of presenters has been revealed. Monday’s ceremony from Las Vegas will include appearances by model Cara Delevingne, singer Shaboozey and “The Traitors'” Dylan Efron. CBS and Dick Clark Productions announced that Shaboozey will be presenting while also nominated for 7 awards. And he’s not the only musician who will be hitting the stage. Jennifer Lopez returns to host the evening for her second time after previously hosting in 2015. Nonimees Blake Shelton, Gwen Stefani, RenĂ©e Rapp, Lainey Wilson, and Benson Boone will also perform.

Jennifer Lopez is being sued for posting photos of herself at a Hollywood party, with the photographer and a paparazzi agency saying she failed to get permission to use them. Photographer Edwin Blanco and Backgrid, the agency he was working for, have both filed lawsuits, saying they own the copyright to 2 photos. They say the pics were e used “to promote Ms. Lopez’s public appearances, boost user engagement, increase shareability, and lend credibility to her branded content”. Backgrid and Mr. Blanco are seeking up to $150,000 damages each, per photo.

DID YA KNOW!?

A chicken once lived for 18 months without a head. Mike the chicken's incredible feat was recorded back in the 1940s in the USA. He survived as his jugular vein and most of his brainstem were left mostly intact, ensuring just enough brain function remained for survival. In the majority of cases, a headless chicken dies in a matter of minutes.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A man from Houston is attempting to visit every Starbucks location in the world. He started in 1997 and has visited over 20,000 locations.

Airbnb has expanded its app to offer a wide range of local services – so now you can order up everything from a hairdresser, a massage, a private chef to a fitness trainer or photographer. In its effort to better compete with hotels, the platform has introduced bookable experiences and services in more than 260 cities worldwide – and you don’t even have to be a traveler to place an order. The idea is to make the app useful whether you’re at home or away. Airbnb is rolling out 10 new service categories, including hairdressers and caterers – but also experiences like horseback riding and museum tours. Airbnb said the move is based on user feedback—and it also meets the needs of hosts, many of whom already rely on cleaning and handyman services. The app has been redesigned to recommend services near your home — or wherever you’re staying, making it more of an everyday lifestyle tool than just a travel companion.

WEIRD NEWS

Researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder have created “Bio-e-Nails”. They are biodegradable artificial nails that not only look good, they can send text messages, AND change color with temperature or sunlight. And with concerns about traditional artificial nails piling up in landfills and releasing microplastics into our environment, this is an idea whose time may have come. The customizable, interactive artificial nails are made from materials like agar (from algae) and chitosan (from seashells). Bio-e-nails aren’t meant for daily activities, but for special events or parties. But how does the ‘texting’ thing work? NFC chips, placed between layers of the bioplastic, allow the nails to perform simple functions when tapped against a smartphone. As for the changing colors, pigments have been added that change color in sunlight, plus materials that respond to temperature changes.
