SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

According to the old stereotype, when men are searching for a partner, they prefer to date younger women. But according to new research, women do too. In a massive study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers at UC Davis and other universities tracked over 6,000 people on more than 4,500 blind dates. They found that both men and women show a modest but equal preference for younger partners during blind dates. It was also found that a person’s stated age preference turned out to have little to no effect on actual attraction, even when dates exceeded their maximum age limits. And despite the fact that both men and women were attracted to younger partners equally, successful long-term matches still tended to involve older-male/younger-female combos. The researchers believe this may be related to external factors, such as societal norms.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Kevin Spacey, who bemoaned his career struggles last week while accepting an honor at Cannes, evoked a classic line from “Airplane” on Saturday, as if to suggest it was him who caused the power outage that disrupted much of southeastern France and threatened the closing ceremony. Spacey – apparently with the help of AI — posted an image on X of himself as ‘Johnny’, the mischievous and irreverent air traffic controller from the 1980 comedy, who briefly unplugs the runway lights as the plane is about to land — before plugging it back in and delivering the one liner: “Just kidding!” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/yv4te25t

Tom Cruise’s “Tropic Thunder” character ‘Les Grossman’ is ready for a comeback. During an interview to promote “Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning”, director Christopher McQuarrie said he and Cruise have had discussions about making a standalone Les Grossman movie. Quote: “The conversations we’ve had about Les Grossman are so (freaking) funny…We’re having very serious conversations about it, and how best to do it.”

Things at “The Kelly Clarkson Show” are still murky. Clarkson is reportedly considering exiting the show at the end of this season, and show staff say the mood of the show has grown increasingly unhappy. Her NBC contract expires next year, and things have been amiss since early Spring, when Clarkson missed multiple shows, citing “personal reasons.” Staffers say her behavior has become erratic, and she’s left them on edge regarding their jobs, with the fear the show could “collapse at any moment.” One report says NBC execs have already begun looking for a replacement, with former “Today Show” host Hoda Kotb at the forefront.

DID YA KNOW!?

The Sun makes a sound but we can't hear it. In the form of pressure waves, the Sun does make a sound. The wavelength of the pressure waves from the Sun is measured in hundreds of miles, however, meaning they are far beyond the range of human hearing.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

You know the routine. You’re at a crowded social function when someone speaks to you, amid the drone of the crowd, the music, and the clinking of drinks and silverware. You ask them to repeat themselves, but you still can’t make out what they’re saying, so you try to fake-laugh it off, or simply say “yeah” – having no idea what you just agreement with. This trick might help. French scientists are saying that you can simply tap your finger before someone speaks in order to hear better in a noisy environment. The team asked people to listen to long sentences. Those who tapped their fingers on a table rhythmically beforehand were found to be better able to identify key words and sentences, despite the background noise. Apparently, it works thanks to the brain responding to the finger rhythm, which imitates the regular pace of spoken words. The researchers wrote that their “experiments underscore the interwoven relationship between action and perception, expanding our understanding of the motor system’s involvement in language comprehension.”

QUOTE OF THE DAY

If you have a favorite quote.... you can send it to us at the bottom of the page at JohnAndHeidiShow.com

"My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon...luge lessons. In the spring, we'd make meat helmets. When I was insolent, I was placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds. Pretty standard, really." – Dr. Evil, "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery" (1997)

✓ Youngest siblings tend to be the funniest, according to research.

✓ Humans put a man on the moon before putting wheels on luggage.

✓ In Japan, police deal with violent or very inebriated people by taking a large futon and rolling them into a “burrito”, then carrying them away.

✓ A single lightning bolt has enough energy to toast 100,000 slices of bread.

When scientists developed straight bananas in the 1960s, the public refused to buy them.

WEIRD NEWS

Chloe Gray is redefining airplane snacks — one rotisserie chicken at a time. The NYC-based influencer turned heads (and probably noses) when she strolled through TSA at Newark Airport with an entire cooked bird — as her carry-on. No designer tote, no soggy airport sandwich — just a Whole Foods rotisserie chicken, which she casually cradled like an edible handbag on her flight to California. In a TikTok that’s racked up over half a million views, Chloe joked: “This is how you give yourself a first-class experience without paying for first class.” TSA did stop her, but once they realized her “suspicious item” was just poultry, she was good to go.
