SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Do you try to eat healthy during the week, but treat yourself on the weekend to a “cheat-meal” – or 2 or 3 – where you can binge-eat on fatty and fried foods to your heart’s content? After all, it’s only for a day or 2, and then you’ll be back on the ‘healthy-eating’ wagon. Bad idea, according to new research. The study, published in the journal Immunity, reveals that even a weekend of consuming fatty foods can seriously damage your gut health. Researchers from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research found that your intestines register the impact of fatty foods within just 48 hours, and the more saturated fats we eat, the more inflammation builds up. This could be why many people experience digestive discomfort after periods of unhealthy eating, like during the holiday season or while on vacation. The researchers cautioned that switching to a diet high in saturated fats can cause immediate changes in gut health, possibly setting the stage for long-term inflammatory diseases later.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Kevin Costner has been named in a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by a stunt performer who alleges she was subjected to an unscripted rape scene on the set of “Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2” in 2023. The complaint notes that SAG does not allow “any last minute requests for nudity or simulated sex.” Devyn LaBella said the alleged incident upended her career, “leaving her with permanent trauma that she will be required to address for years to come.” She also included the production companies behind the movie as defendants. Costner’s attorneys said the claims have “absolutely no merit”

HBO’s “Harry Potter” TV series has found its ‘Harry Potter’, ‘Ron Weasley’ and ‘Hermione Granger’. The new adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved book series will be led by Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton, the network announced on Tuesday. The roles were originally portrayed by Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson, respectively. More than 30,000 actors auditioned for the lead roles since HBO launched an open casting call last fall. Filming is expected to begin this summer.

DID YA KNOW!?

The more steps you take each day, the lower your chances of developing up to 13 different types of cancer, according to recent findings from the University of Oxford. In a 6-year study involving over 85,000 people in the UK, a clear pattern was discovered: more steps equals lower cancer risk, regardless of how fast those steps are taken. The benefits began to appear at around 5,000 steps a day. At 7,000 steps, the risk of developing cancer dropped by 11%. At 9,000 steps, it dropped by 16%. Beyond 9,000 steps, the benefits levelled off. These findings support the popular recommendation of aiming for 10,000 steps a day – not just for general health, but now potentially for cancer prevention too.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Have you ever watched one of those news stories where a couple is celebrating a 70th or 80th wedding anniversary, and one of them inevitably attributes the secret of their long marriage to the fact they “never go to bed angry”? But according to some experts, there are actually several benefits to doing just that. Psychologists Dr. Samantha Rodman and Dr. Sabrina Romanoff believe that trying to settle things while tired can actually backfire – because your emotional control, listening skills, and problem-solving ability all suffer when you’re exhausted. Instead, it’s often better to pause and revisit the issue after a good night’s sleep. If you struggle to let things go, it might be “attachment panic”—a fear of disconnection. The key is to reassure your partner (even with a grumpy “I love you”) and agree to talk about the issue later. Keeping small rituals, like a goodnight kiss, helps affirm your bond. Ultimately, they say, putting your disagreement on hold until the next day isn’t about avoiding conflict, but learning to handle it with care, patience, and emotional maturity. Afterall, Romanoff said: “A well-rested brain is better equipped to engage in thoughtful, respectful communication.”

WEIRD NEWS

Several studies have indicated that dogs very much enjoy when their owner speaks to them in that high-pitched, exaggerated “baby talk” style. Often referred to as “dog directed speech” or “infant directed speech” it has been found to evoke a stronger response in dogs’ brains, compared to normal speech. Measurements of brain activity in dogs suggest they are attuned to the exaggerated intonation and rhythm that humans also use when communicating with infants — and perhaps this is why we instinctively speak to them in this way.

THE LIST

DOING THESE WILL MAKE YOU HAPPIER:

Mental health experts say that doing these activities will help boost your body’s production of the feel-good brain chemical dopamine — even on a Monday…

Dancing: Doing so lights up the brain’s reward system by pairing movement with rhythm, novelty, and joy, which boosts mood naturally. And if you dance with other people, it releases oxytocin — a chemical that facilitates connection.

High-Intensity Interval Training: HIIT alternates bursts of intense exercise with periods of recovery. Those shorts bursts of intense effort force your brain to release a combo of dopamine, adrenaline, and endorphins.

Walking in Nature: Walking anywhere provides health benefits — but when done in nature, the combo of movement, sunlight, and being surrounded by trees offers a triple hit of dopamine, serotonin, and reduced cortisol, the stress hormone.

Play-Based Activities: Things like trampoline jumping, skating, water games, or playing with your dog help make movement feel like joy, not a task. That’s a natural dopamine-boost.

Yoga: It activates dopamine by reducing stress hormones and encouraging present-moment awareness. The combo of slow breathing stretching, and focus calms the nervous system and resets your mood.
