SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Candy disappears faster than a ghost on Halloween night — and even before Halloween in most households, according to a new study. A survey of 2,000 adults found the average person can’t resist dipping into their Halloween candy…and goes through their stash TWICE before trick-or-treaters even arrive. One in 4 said they’ve had to restock 3 or more times. Despite good intentions, 55% still end up making a last-minute candy run, while 43% scramble for finishing touches to their costumes. The study, conducted by Talker Research for CVS Pharmacy, found that Halloween prep is serious business – with many people spending over 5 hours putting together the perfect look, and fully 62% proudly calling themselves “Halloween people.” More findings from the survey…

51% of those who decorate outdoors claim theirs is the best-looking house on the block.

43% say they “go all out” with costumes.

32% prefer sweet snacks vs. 15% salty.

40% hand out non-food treats like fidget toys or bracelets to be inclusive of children with food allergies.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

The Cowardly Lion is off to see the wizard! Colman Domingo, that is. The Oscar nominee has joined the cast of “Wicked: For Good’ as the ‘Cowardly Lion’. The news was announced in a joint Instagram reel shared by Domingo and the movie’s official account. Wicked: For Good, in theaters Nov. 21, will also see the return of its star-studded main cast, which includes Cynthia Erivo, Johnathan Bailey, Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh, Marissa Bode, Bowen Yang, Bronwyn James and Ethan Slater. Netflix has announced a new drama series that will explore the triumphs and tragedies of the Kennedy family. Michael Fassbender has been cast as patriarch Joe Kennedy Sr. The 8-episode series, titled “Kennedy”, will detail “the intimate lives, loves, rivalries, and tragedies that shaped the most iconic dynasty in modern history, and helped create the world we live in today.” Beginning in the 1930s, the first season charts the ascent of Joe and Rose and their 9 children, including rebellious second son Jack (JFK). The series, not to be confused with the upcoming Ryan Murphy-produced “American Love Story” focusing on JFK Jr., does not yet have a release date.

Ireland Baldwin didn’t hold back while reflecting on her “lonely” childhood with “poisonous” family members. Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger’s daughter told Substack subscribers that she no longer carries the weight of her “narcissistic, unreliable, addict family members.” The 29-year-old, who, quote, “grew up without 2 parents in my home and no siblings to turn to,” explained that she previously felt the need for family members’ “validation and praise”, without specifying whom she was referring to. She said: “Nothing was more freeing than finally realizing how poisonous these people are.” Now, her goal as a mother is to “show how a real family treats one another.”

DID YA KNOW!?

A freshman on Vanderbilt’s basketball team has gone viral for saying in his bio that he’s never watched the TV show “Friends”. That normally wouldn’t be an unusual claim about a sitcom that’s more than 20 years old, but it stands out in this case because the player in question, a 6 foot-5 freshman small forward from Atlanta, is named…Chandler Bing.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Halloween fun can turn frightening – for real. Thousands of people visit U.S. emergency rooms each year for Halloween-related injuries, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. About 3,200 people are treated annually, half of them from pumpkin-carving accidents involving deep hand cuts that sometimes require surgery. Falls sustained while trick-or-treating make up roughly a quarter of injuries, often due to long costumes or poor lighting. Other common scary-season injuries include falls, burns from candles and allergic reactions to makeup or candy. A JAMA Pediatrics study found children ages 4–8 are 10 times more likely to be struck by vehicles on Halloween night, making visibility and supervision crucial, of course.

Here it is: Your annual excuse NOT to rake the leaves that are piling higher on your lawn by the day. The Nature Conservancy of Canada has a green-friendly response for those of us who’d like to avoid the back-breaking and callus-creating task of clearing the leaves: Just don’t do it. Why not? There are 3 major benefits to leaving the leaves in the yard during fall. First, it helps biodiversity, as there are many native insects and small critters such as frogs and toads that hibernate under the leaves during the winter. They also serve as a food source for birds, such as robins, which often forage among the leaves, searching for insects to eat. The other benefit is to the lawn itself. Leaves provide a natural mulch when they break down, which helps soil development. While large piles of leaves can impact the growth of grass and other plants come spring, a thin layer of leaves can help maintain the health of gardens and lawns.

WEIRD NEWS

Alan Hamel has an interesting way of keeping Suzanne Somers’ memory alive. Two years after the actress’ death at 76, her husband and partner of 55 years, Hamel, is putting plans into action that the 2 had discussed for decades. He said that one of the projects is the “Suzanne AI Twin.” The plan is to put it up on SuzanneSomers.com, and invite fans and her online customers to “come and talk to her”. Hamel said that people will be able to “just hang out with her”, or “ask her any questions they want.”

QUESTION OF THE DAY

THE LIST

THE BEST POP CULTURE HALLOWEEN COSTUMES OF 2025:

💔 Sabrina Carpenter, ‘Tears’ Era:

Disco, camp, and chaos – her Tears video is a Halloween gift. Think fringe, sparkle, and a wink to Rocky Horror. DIY her shiny bra top and purple bottoms, or rock the blue skirt suit from her VMA look. (You’ll cry-dance all evening, though…)

🩸 ‘Stack’ & ‘Smoke’ from “Sinners”:

Michael B. Jordan times 2! Twin up in dark suits – one blue, one red – and quote, “Nah, we cousins.” Add fake blood and fedoras for full horror-core chic.

🐰 Labubu — The Viral Toy:

Couldn’t snag the collector’s item? Be the collector’s item. Go fuzzy from head to toe, add bunny ears, and paint the mischievous grin. It’s a great group costume, with every friend a different Labubu edition.

🤓 Jonathan Bailey’s “Slutty Little Glasses”:

Channel “Jurassic World Rebirth’s” unexpected thirst trap. Grab tiny wire frames, a flannel, and khakis — the look says “geek chic,” but make it feral.

💘 “The Summer I Turned Pretty” Trio:

Still arguing Team Conrad vs. Team Jeremiah? Turn the debate into a costume. 3 T-shirts, 3 colors, and a marker for tallying votes. Instant icebreaker.

🧟‍♂️ Frankenstein’s Monster: Go classic with bolts and green makeup – or moody modern like Jacob Elordi in fuzzy layers and mystery. Either way, it’s alive! (Finally, a costume that matches my energy: stitched together and tired!)

👖 Katseye Girl Group:

Six girls. All denim. All attitude. Reference their viral Gap ad or TikTok choreo. Add sparkle, hoops, and synchronized hair flips.

🧚‍♀️ ‘Elphaba’ & ‘Glinda’ from “Wicked: For Good”:

Good witch, bad witch – or both. Go pink and poofy as Glinda or dramatic and green as Elphaba. Add ‘Fiyero’ for a glittery Oz love triangle.

🩴 “Love Island” Contestant: “Can I pull you for a chat?” Bathing suits, name water bottles, fuzzy mics — done. For a PG version, wear clubwear and carry a plastic wine glass. (Currently coupling up… with my third drink…)

🔔 ‘Aunt Gladys’ from “Weapons”:

This year’s creepiest cult fave. Red wig, smeared makeup, rainbow clothes, and a bell to jingle ominously. Bring friends as the bewitched kids for maximum chaos.

💃 Taylor Swift: The Showgirl Era:

Feathers, rhinestones, and heartbreak glitter. Channel “The Life of a Showgirl” with orange, purple, and champagne sparkle — or go deep cut as ‘Ophelia’ from her haunting video art.

🦸‍♂️ “Superman” (or ‘Lois’ & ‘Clark’):

Classic never dies. Spandex optional…just wear red and blue, slap on the “S,” and strike a pose. Bonus: cape your dog as ‘Krypto’ for sidekick status.

💼 Anyone from “Severance”:

Minimalism meets existential dread. Muted officewear, a Lumon lanyard, and 1,000-yard stare. Go as Mark and Helly, or full chaos mode as Lorne with fake blood and a plush goat.
