SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

OK, if you’re heading to a holiday party this weekend, you might already be dreading that awkward dance when you decide “you gotta go”. There’s an art to “the depart”, and experts say it’s a skill that can serve you well at any gathering, any time of year. Communication researchers call it “leave-taking behavior,” which includes 2 key parts. First, make a clear exit statement like “Heading out!” or “It’s time…” without excuses or hedging that could invite people to persuade you to stay “for a bit”. Second, add a short compliment to the host, such as “Great party!” Ending with gratitude keeps the focus on them, not your departure. Humor can help, too, with light lines about being tired or full. Sneaking out without saying formal goodbyes is increasingly acceptable at large events, as long as you send a quick thank-you afterward.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Nearly a year after losing everything in the devastating Los Angeles fires, a miracle has brought some cherished memories back to Ricki Lake. On Sunday, artist Patty Scanlon purchased a box of photos from the Pasadena Flea Market, and soon realized that some of them were of Lake and her son, Milo, who is now 28, when he was a baby. Scanlon called it a “miracle” that she’d not only found the photos and purchased them, but that she’d managed to get in touch with Lake to return them.

BeyoncĂ© is returning to the Met Gala. After having last appeared at the New York City ball a decade ago, she’ll co-chair its 2026 affair. Joining her on the dais are Oscar winner Nicole Kidman, tennis champion Venus Williams, and former Vogue editor Anna Wintour. A fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, the gala will coincide with the “Costume Art” exhibition, and take place on May 4.

Pamela Anderson has explained the romantic connection she shared with Liam Neeson after they filmed “The Naked Gun” together. While headlines of their surprise romance were met with enthusiasm by many and skepticism by some, according to her, they “were romantically involved for a short while but only after we finished filming.” They spent an “intimate week” together at his home in upstate New York, where, she noted, “I had my own room”, and they had plenty of company. Now, she said, “I adore Liam, but we are better friends, in full honesty.”

DID YA KNOW!?

Did You Know... You Can’t Snore and Dream at the Same Time?
When you’re in REM sleep—the stage where most dreaming occurs—your brain paralyzes the muscles responsible for snoring to prevent you from acting out your dreams. This means that if you’re snoring, it’s likely you’re not in a deep dream state.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

It turns out the raccoon that got drunk and passed out in a bathroom after breaking into a Virginia liquor store on Black Friday is a repeat offender. The furry bandit, who went viral and became known as the “trashed panda”, reportedly hit at least 2 other nearby spots, including a karate studio and the DMV, where it helped itself to snacks. The raccoon spent a night at the shelter to sober up before being released nearby. Animal Protection Officer Samantha Martin said: “He’s a smart little critter,” and noted the animal somehow keeps finding its way back inside the building. Officials hope the raccoon has learned a lesson – but admit it seems to be living its best life.

The “trashed panda” now has a line of drinks named after him. The mischievous raccoon in Virginia went viral last week after breaking into a liquor store, knocking over bottles, and passing out on the bathroom floor. Rescued by Hanover County Animal Protection, the little guy recovered, and fans have helped raise over $100,000 through “Trashed Panda” merchandise. Now, the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority (ABC) has released 3 raccoon-inspired cocktails that reflect the animal’s boozy escapades. Each comes with descriptions, ingredients, and directions so fans can recreate the raccoon-approved concoctions at home…

Rye Rascal Sour: rye whiskey, lemon juice, maple syrup, Angostura bitters; tangy and rich.

Trash Panda Old Fashioned: bourbon, brown sugar, Angostura, orange bitters; topped with smoked salt or brown sugar for a “rummaged” vibe.

Midnight Masked Gin Fizz: gin, lemon juice, simple syrup, soda water, blackberry syrup; creates a dark “mask” streak effect.

WEIRD NEWS

It turns out that the theory about electric vehicles – that because they’re so quiet, they’re a danger to pedestrians — is…an old wives’ tale. OK…a NEWER wives’ tale. A decade of British road safety data shows that electric vehicles aren’t any more dangerous to pedestrians than gas-powered cars. An analysis of more than 167,000 pedestrian casualties found that people are no more likely to be struck by an EV. EVs made up only 1.38% of pedestrian casualties, with nearly identical rates per mile. The shift toward equal safety appears linked to 2019 regulations requiring electric and hybrid cars to emit artificial warning sounds at low speeds. As EV adoption grew, these alerts helped bring their pedestrian safety performance in line with traditional vehicles.

THE LIST

A recent Reddit thread asked users Gen Z’ers and millennials what they wish their parents and older generations knew – or what they should stop doing. Here are some of the best answers…

☞ “Older generations should stop running for political office. You ruined the housing market. You ruined politics. You ruined education. And now you’re mad that we’re trying to fix it all.”

☞ “Stop staying: ‘This generation doesn’t want to work anymore,’ when a business is short-staffed. It’s not that the younger generations don’t want to work. We are unwilling to let our jobs/careers take precedence over living our lives.”

☞ “Please listen to what younger generations have to say, instead of saying, ‘Well, back in my day’ or ‘Kids these days.’”

☞ “My parents seem to think you can take a pile of your CVs around town, hand them out, and have a job by the end of the day.”

☞ “Please at least try to learn the technology if you are working age.”
