SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

A new survey highlights the toll that financial strain is taking on Gen Z hourly workers, with many saying money worries have hurt their social lives, mental health, and physical well-being over the past year. More than a third of respondents to the poll, taken in the US, are juggling multiple jobs, while nearly half say they have an hour or less of free time each day. Despite working harder, 68% doubt they’ll ever fully retire, and most expect to work past traditional retirement age just to make ends meet. Tight budgets have also affected dating, work performance, and daily habits, pushing many Gen Z workers into extreme cost-cutting. Here are the top money-saving hacks used by Gen Z, according to the poll…

Eating mostly home-cooked meals (44%)

Shopping at discount stores (38%)

Using coupon apps, cashback sites, and waiting for sales (36%)

Doing free activities for fun (36%)

Meal prepping (31%)

Buying in bulk (30%)

Cutting my own hair (26%)

Buying things secondhand (25%)

Other hacks include keeping the thermostat very low in the winter and high in the summer, taking short, cold, or no showers, doing laundry in the bathtub, and air-drying clothing.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

“Avatar: Fire and Ash” continued its reign of box office dominance, landing at the top of the domestic charts for a fourth weekend in a row, with an estimated $21 million haul. In second place was Paramount’s creature feature “Primate,” which debuted to about $11 million from North American theaters over the weekend. “Greenland 2: Migration” came third, with a projected $8.5 million.

Maya Hawke had a big influence on her “Stranger Things” character ‘Robin’, and admits that she even began sneaking “weird” things into every episode. When Jimmy Fallon noted that Hawke’s character was very “quirky” and used words that he had “never heard said”, Hawke admitted that she “started doing this thing that I probably shouldn’t have done.” Specifically, she “would just come in in the morning and be like, ‘Well, I’m just going to try to sneak one weird word under the radar.” Hawke previously explained that when the Duffer brothers, Matt and Ross, realized that she spoke incredibly fast due to her nerves, they decided to give her more dialogue.

A famous PI is plotting an NBC return. The network has given a pilot order to “The Rockford Files”, a reboot of the classic Stephen J. Cannell series starring James Garner which ran from 1974-80. The Rockford Files is a contemporary update on the classic series. Newly paroled after doing time for a crime he didn’t commit, ‘James Rockford’ returns to his life as a private investigator, using his charm and wit to solve cases, but it doesn’t take long for him to land squarely in the crosshairs of both local police and organized crime.

DID YA KNOW!?

DID YOU KNOW… Some turtles can breathe through their butts. Certain species use a process called cloacal respiration, allowing them to absorb oxygen through blood vessels near their tail. This helps them survive underwater for extended periods.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Would you consider yourself a tough negotiator? It might pay off…but with a hidden cost. A large analysis of 90 studies involving over 16,000 negotiations found that bold opening offers often secure better financial outcomes…when deals succeed. However, they also significantly increase the risk that talks will collapse, and leave lasting damage to relationships. Researchers found that anger is the key driver: people who receive overly ambitious offers tend to feel disrespected, are more likely to walk away, and view the other party more negatively. The takeaway is strategic: aggressive tactics may work in one-time transactions, like selling a car, but can backfire in situations where long-term relationships matter, such as salary negotiations or ongoing partnerships.

Valentine’s Day is coming, and Reese’s is making it sweeter with a new treat: “Peanut Butter Mini Hearts Unwrapped”. These bite-sized, unwrapped heart-shaped candies deliver the ideal peanut butter-to-chocolate ratio that fans love, making them dangerously easy to snack on. The festive shape also makes them perfect for sharing, gifting, or topping desserts. Packaged in a resealable pouch, they’re designed for convenience – but not for self-control. And fans are already hyped, praising the seasonal minis as the best version of Reese’s classic combo of chocolate and peanut butter. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/4v8a9zdu

WEIRD NEWS

Last week, we were introduced to the Treadmower, Natural Light’s first-of-its-kind “turfed treadmill” that’s engineered to simulate the simple joy of mowing the lawn – and giving guys the chance to “get cut while pretending to cut”. Now, Miller Lite has teamed with Christopher Walken to chime in with its own bizarre promotion – “Damp January”. Damp January is a new “club” aimed at those who want to cut back…but still want to stay social. The campaign, part of its “Legendary Moments Start with a Lite” push, uses the beloved actor to confirm that yes, beer is still on the menu. Members can sign up for a chance to win prizes including “The Dampest Keg Ever,” beer money to fill it, and VIP merch. The message is simple: smaller pours, same legendary hangs. HOW TO MAKE IT THROUGH COLD AND FLU SEASON:

I can’t guarantee this will prevent your catching a cold or the flu, but here are some ways you can greatly reduce your chances — and decrease the likelihood that you’ll have a severe case if you do get sick. Following these steps also protects others by reducing the chances that germs will be spread…

Get a flu shot: The CDC says vaccination is the best protection against flu and its complications. Sept.-Oct. is ideal, but getting it later (even in January) is still worthwhile, since flu season runs through April. And remember, despite what you’ve read online from “armchair experts”, the flu shot CANNOT give you the flu! In 2024-25, effectiveness was about 56%, one of the best seasons in years.

Wash hands, avoid touching your face, and limit exposure to sick people: Basic hygiene still works. Wash your hands more often than usual, keep them away from your face, and consider masking in crowded or cough-heavy spaces.

Stay home when ill, cough into your elbow, and clean surfaces: These behaviors reduce how much virus circulates in your community. Regularly disinfect high-touch items like phones, doorknobs, remotes, keyboards, and car controls.

Air purifiers: helpful, but not a magic shield: There’s no strong real-world evidence they prevent infections, but they can improve air quality and may reduce exposure in poorly ventilated spaces. Think of them as a bonus, not a replacement for proven measures.

The best protection comes from ‘layering’ strategies: No single step is perfect, but vaccination, hygiene, staying home when sick, masking when appropriate, and utilizing ventilation can all be contributors to lessening the chances that you…and others, get sick.
