SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Unlike using your phone while driving, listening to podcasts is NOT a distraction, according to a new study. Researchers at Fujita Health University in Japan found that passively listening to podcasts, audiobooks, or radio caused no measurable delays in eye movements. Talking on the phone, however – even hands-free – slowed how quickly and accurately drivers’ eyes could spot and track objects. Researchers say the act of producing speech competes with the brain systems that control eye movement, potentially increasing crash risk.

After just two and half weeks of release, the Sydney Sweeney box-office hit “The Housemaid” has already been lined up for a sequel. Lionsgate announced that it will start production on “The Housemaid’s Secret” later this year. The film will be based on the second of Freida McFadden’s bestselling trilogy of books. “The Housemaid” was a hit at the holiday box office, grossing more than $75 million domestically, and $133 million worldwide in 17 days of release.
Gwyneth Paltrow says her decision to “consciously uncouple” from Chris Martin bled into her professional life. She opened up about the unexpected impact of the end of her marriage to the Coldplay frontman in a new interview. On Amy Poehler’s podcast, Paltrow said: “I was supposed to do a movie (then) and there was a lot of harsh stuff in the press. I think the distributor was like, this might be too hot to touch.” She then sarcastically added: “So that was great because I was getting a divorce and then I got fired…So it was so awesome.” Paltrow, who shares daughter Apple and son Moses with Martin, married producer Brad Falchuk in 2018.

OF THE DAY
Researchers are testing the gene-editing tool Crispr as a next-gen super flu-fighter. Using the Cas13 enzyme, a nasal spray or injection could teach respiratory cells to cut flu virus RNA, halting infections at the source. Early “lung-on-a-chip” tests suppressed multiple strains, including H1N1 and H3N2, without weird side-effects. While the idea is promising, challenges remain, including safe delivery deep into the lungs and avoiding immune reactions. If successful, Crispr could offer rapid, strain-proof protection against seasonal and pandemic flu.
A Virginia airport is asking the public for help reuniting a lost teddy bear with its owner. Norfolk International Airport shared a photo of the gingham-clad plush – complete with bunny slippers – on Facebook on Dec. 30, saying it was turned in to the airport’s lost and found that afternoon. The post quickly went viral, earning 2,000 shares and dozens of heartfelt comments. Some users suggested the toy appeared to be from Build-A-Bear, noting the company’s internal barcode system could help track its owner. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2j7dtymh

WEIRD NEWS
OK…what in the heck is “Oatzempic”? It’s a TikTok and Instagram trend, of course, where people blend oats with water or juice, supposedly a “natural alternative” to the appetite control and weight loss drug Ozempic. The theory is that oats are high in soluble fiber, which slows digestion and can modestly improve fullness, blood sugar, and cholesterol. The problem? There’s no scientific evidence that the drink causes meaningful weight loss. Experts warn it’s not a meal replacement, it lacks protein and essential nutrients, and should not replace evidence-based dietary or medical care. They remind the “Oatzempic’ers” that for sustainable results, balanced meals, regular exercise, hydration.”
