SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Wow. Who knew? Online shopping may be more stressful than catching up on the news. Finnish researchers found that shopping, social media, gaming, and streaming were most strongly linked to higher self-reported stress, while time spent on email, doomscrolling news sites, and even adult content was associated with lower stress levels. The study tracked nearly 1,500 adults over 7 months, analyzing millions of web visits and app uses. Women reported more stress than men, while older and wealthier participants reported less. Researchers say the internet can both increase and relieve stress, and warn against blanket limits on online use, arguing more research is needed to understand the complex relationship between digital habits and well-being.

Noah Wyle was so broke that he nearly sold his priceless baseball card collection during the COVID pandemic. He had been in a yearslong slump before recently rediscovering his passion with “The Pitt”. After rising to fame in “ER” from 1993 to the show’s end in 2005, Wyle found himself struggling to find the next step in his career. He told the NY Times that during the pandemic, while strapped for cash and questioning his relevance as an actor, his financial burdens grew so large that he even considered selling his priceless baseball card collection to support himself. Now enjoying a resurgence on The Pitt, he told the outlet: “I didn’t think lightning would strike twice like this in my life, 30 years apart … it’s the greatest gift.”
The “Heated Rivalry” boys are coming back sooner than expected – in book form. Author Rachel Reid will publish the 7th instalment in her “Game Changers” series in September. “Unrivaled” returns to the love story of ‘Shane Hollander’ and ‘Ilya Rozanov’, the subjects of the Crave TV show, and of the second and 6th books in the series, “Heated Rivalry” and “The Long Game.” The other books in the series follow different gay couples in the world of pro hockey. The TV series, which is broadcast on HBO Max in the US, propelled Shane and Ilya’s books to the New York Times bestseller list, with publisher Harlequin saying more than 1.3 million copies have been sold.
Cher is asking a judge to force Sonny Bono’s widow to cover her $1 million legal tab, because, she claims, Mary Bono tried to “misuse” the Copyright Act to illegally “obtain a windfall” at Cher’s expense. In their divorce settlement, Sonny had assigned to Cher a 50% share of his composition royalties for hit songs including ‘I Got You Babe’ and ‘The Beat Goes On’. She also got a 50% share of the musical recordings they made together. Cher’s lawyers said Mary “secretly” diverted Cher’s royalties to herself and Sonny’s other heirs, after using the termination provisions of the Copyright Act to claw back grants Sonny had made to music publishers involving other compositions…but the judge found that Cher’s grant was untouchable.
DID YA KNOW!?
DID YOU KNOW… Spiders cannot fly—but many still travel by air. They use a method called ballooning, releasing silk strands that catch the wind. This allows spiders to travel miles, even across oceans.

THE WORST CLEANSES AND FASTS IN HISTORY:
From ancient rituals to TikTok trends, people have long searched for quick “detox” fixes. The problem? Many of these cleanses are ineffective at best…and dangerous at worst. Here are some of the strangest (and most harmful)…
Tapeworm Diet: People intentionally swallowed tapeworm eggs so the parasite would “eat” excess calories. This often led to malnutrition, infections, organ damage – and even death.
Cascade Enema: Early 20th-century texts promoted frequent enemas as cures for everything from paralysis to infections. While enemas have limited medical uses, they do not detox the body and can cause irritation and dependency if misused.
Borax Bathing (and Drinking): Recently revived online, borax (yes, the laundry booster) has been promoted as a way to remove toxins and reduce inflammation. Experts warn that ingesting it can cause serious poisoning, and even skin exposure can lead to rashes and irritation.
Activated Charcoal Cleanses: Charcoal can be lifesaving in poison emergencies, but using it regularly in foods and drinks can bind to essential nutrients and medications. Over time, this may lead to nutrient deficiencies and reduced drug effectiveness.
Cabbage Soup Diet: This crash diet promises quick weight loss through a low-calorie, cabbage-heavy meal plan. Most of the lost weight is water, and prolonged use can cause fatigue, headaches, digestive issues, and malnutrition.
Master Cleanse: A 10-day liquid diet of lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper, plus daily laxatives and saltwater flushes. It causes rapid weight loss mainly from dehydration and muscle loss, not fat — and can seriously disrupt metabolism.

WEIRD NEWS
Drivers could soon travel on highways built from an unexpected material: old tires. An eco-focused nonprofit in Georgia called The Ray is making roads smoother and safer by repaving with rubber-modified asphalt…made from scrap tires. The result, they say, is longer-lasting, quieter roads – that are also easier on vehicle tires. The group’s broader goal is a “net-zero” highway system, aiming for zero deaths, zero emissions, and zero waste. An 18-mile (29km) stretch of highway near the Alabama border is already using the new surface. Beyond road materials, The Ray is also exploring pollinator-friendly roadside landscaping to cut mowing and emissions, and studying the potential for roadside solar installations to generate clean energy.
