SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

People overwhelmingly prefer to make decisions on their own rather than ask for advice, no matter their culture. A study of more than 3,500 participants across 12 countries found that “thinking things through” by themselves was the top choice when making decisions, followed by trusting gut instincts. Asking friends for advice came third, while consulting larger groups was generally least popular. Even in community-oriented societies, most people still favor independent decision-making. Published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, the study challenges the idea that group-focused cultures naturally seek more guidance from others. From students in South Korea, Japan, Germany, and Canada to indigenous communities in the Amazon, self-reliance consistently came first, intuition second, and group input last, though culture did influence how strongly these preferences appeared.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

CBS is extending its partnership with Dick Clark Productions, sealing a new 5-year deal to keep the American Music Awards on the Eye network and Paramount+ starting in 2026. The news comes following CBS’ broadcast in May of the 2025 American Music Awards, hosted by Jennifer Lopez. The 2025 AMAs served as a revival of the awards show, after it wasn’t held in 2023 or 2024.

A “Home Improvement” reunion is set for “Shifting Gears” Season 2 premiere. Patricia Richardson, Richard Karn, and Debbe Dunning will guest star alongside their former co-star, Tim Allen, who stars and executive produces Shifting Gears. The trio will appear in the Season 2 premiere, airing on Wednesday, October 1. Their characters will support Allen’s character ‘Matt Parker’ in an “unexpected way”. Details regarding who they will play are under wraps.

Gunsmoke” is taking over the airwaves in honor of the 70th anniversary of its premiere. MeTV is celebrating with a monthlong marathon that will last from August 30 to September 27. Each week, the network will select a theme — and air correlating episodes each weekday at 1pm. The weekly themes include “A Week of Firsts” featuring first episodes and cast appearances, “Best of Matt Dillon Week” in honor of James Arness’ character, “Best Characters of Dodge City”, highlighting the show’s notable costars, and “Guest Stars Week” showcasing famous actors in guest roles.

Celebrity trainer Jillian Michaels plans to take legal action against Netflix following the release of “The Biggest Loser” docuseries. Michaels was one of the fitness experts on the weight loss show. She was embroiled in controversy in 2013 when producers accused her of breaking the rules by giving her team caffeine pills without doctor’s permission. After the drama was trotted back out in the Netflix series “Fit for TV: The Reality of the Biggest Loser”, which debuted earlier this month, Michaels accused host Bob Harper and show medic Dr. Robert Huizenga of lying about not approving the use of caffeine pills — and revealed her plans to sue.

DID YA KNOW!?

Bacteria on your skin cause your itches. Specifically, bacteria known as Staphylococcus aureus can release a chemical that activates a protein in our nerves. This sends a signal from our skin to our brains, which our brain perceives as an itch.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Beginning next year, employers in Ontario will no longer be allowed to “ghost” job applicants. The new policy follows reports that that up to 75% of candidates never receive any feedback, nor a final decision, even after multiple interviews and assessments. The new rules, which apply to employers with 25 or more workers, require them to notify interviewees of whether a hiring decision has been made within 45 days of their final interview.

Move over, fluoride: there’s a new cavity fighter in town, and it comes from your hair. Researchers at King’s College London have created a toothpaste using keratin, the protein found in hair, skin, nails and even sheep’s wool. Keratin forms a mineral-like coating that mimics natural enamel, protecting teeth, repairing early-stage damage and sealing sensitive nerve channels. The team says this biotech breakthrough could mean someday, we’ll be using a keratin-based toothpaste (that’s right – a toothpaste made from hair!) to help us sport healthier, stronger smiles. A keratin-based toothpaste or gel could be on shelves within 2-3 years.

WEIRD NEWS

The City of Seoul has taken a page out of science fiction, testing life-size holographic police officers to help keep city streets safe. Every evening between 7 and 10pm, a 170cm tall (5’7’’) digital cop appears in a local park, reminding passersby that officers can respond quickly in an emergency — and that plenty of cameras are watching. Created by hologram tech firm Hologrammica, the projection is designed to reassure residents, and to discourage bad behavior. Installed on a trial basis last October, the “holo-cop” is already credited with cutting crime in the park, turning futuristic policing into a present-day reality.

THE LIST

MYTH-CONCEPTIONS:

Some more things that many people believe, that simply aren’t true…

Myth: Cows sleep standing up.

Fact: They may doze off while standing around a pasture, but for an intense period of sleep, which doesn’t usually last much more than 2 hours, they’ll lie down.

Myth: Bananas grow on trees.

Fact: Bananas grow on plants that are technically herbs, not trees. The “trunk” is actually made of tightly packed leaves.

Myth: Muscles get sore the day after exercising hard because of a buildup of lactic acid.

Fact: That pain is actually a phenomenon called DOMS, or delayed-onset muscle soreness. It’s caused by inflammation and tiny, temporary muscle tears.

Myth: Toilet paper manufacturers bleach the product to make it white, to make it seem clean and pristine.

Fact: Toilet paper, which finishes up as a pale brownish gray, is bleached to make a final product softer. The fact that it turns white is a happy accident
