SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

New research suggests that fasting just 3 days a week leads to more weight loss and better health outcomes than constantly counting calories. While people tend to have difficulty sticking to daily calorie restrictions, researchers from the University of Colorado School of Medicine said the 4:3 intermittent fasting regimen could be a more sustainable way to maintain weight loss in the long run. That involves cutting your calorie intake to 20% of the usual maintenance diet of 1,800-2,000 calories per day, on 3 non-consecutive days each week. On the other 4 days, you’d eat your normal diet, with no restrictions or calories, but with an emphasis on healthy foods and portion control.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
Landman” loves an actor who can rock a Stetson. The Paramount+ drama has added Sam Elliott in a major Season 2 role opposite Billy Bob Thornton. The casting reunites the “1883” star with series creator Taylor Sheridan. Character details are being kept under wraps, but Elliott will be a series regular.

“Dexter: Resurrection” will premiere with 2 episodes on July 11 via Paramount+, with its on-air debut on Showtime coming 2 days later. The news was a revealed in a teaser for the newest series in the “Dexter” franchise, in which Michael C. Hall reprises his role as vigilante serial killer ‘Dexter Morgan’. In the teaser, he is seen reading a newspaper, and raising his eyebrow and grinning over an article headlined “Dexter Morgan Is Dead.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2s4vjjrx

SCOOP OF THE DAY

This week in 1789, George Washington was sworn in as first president of the United States.

A California prison dentist who retired last year scored a payout of over a million dollars from cashing in his thousands of hours of unused vacation time. The state of California paid prison supervising dentist George Soohoo the $1.2 million, which it said is a new record for payouts.

Researchers say they’ve come up with a new app that is designed to help the estimated 11% of people with mild depressive symptoms, who generally fall through healthcare cracks because they aren’t suffering enough to meet clinical thresholds for treatment. RESiLIENT contains 5 common therapy techniques, and was put together after a study involving nearly 4,000 adults with what researchers call “subthreshold depression.” Users spent 20-60 minutes on the app per week, and 6 months later, they still reported improved mental health results. It is hoped the app will help those who suffer symptoms that don’t require traditional treatment, but still cause them to function at less than 100%.

WEIRD NEWS

You’ve never seen a banana like this: A UK-based biotech company has engineered a banana that doesn’t turn brown — and stays fresh longer – and it is coming to grocery stores soon. “Tropic” claims its new banana remains fresh for 12 hours after it’s been peeled. How is this possible? They used a gene editing technique to disable the enzyme that makes bananas turn brown. The new non-browning bananas are expected to show up on store shelves, including in North America, before the end of this year. This development also opens up more possibilities for modifying bananas to improve disease resistance and extend shelf-life, which the company is already working on.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

THE LIST

HEALTH MYTHBUSTING:

Never apply ice to a burn: Fact. Ice causes constriction of blood vessels and will make a burn deeper, because healing blood flow to the area will be restricted. Instead, immediately immerse the burn in cool water, or apply a cool, wet compress.

Eating too much sugar will give you diabetes: Myth. Sugar becomes glucose in your bloodstream. In response, your body makes insulin to regulate blood sugar. Type 2 diabetes is a problem with insulin regulation, not sugar intake. (It’ll still wreck your teeth and make you fat, though — but totally worth it, some days!)

Eating carrots improves your vision: Myth. However, they ARE good for your eyes. Carrots are orange because they contain beta-carotene, which your body converts into Vitamin A. That vitamin is important for vision.

You don’t need 8 glasses of water daily: True. There is no scientific evidence to support this. Your requirement depends on a number of factors including body size, climate, and activity level.

You should rinse the toothpaste from your mouth after brushing your teeth: Myth. That means you’re also spitting out the fluoride that’s protecting you from tooth decay — before it can work. If you feel that you need to rinse, use as little water as possible, and try to just spit out the foam.
