SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

A Mayo Clinic study examined the effects of sleeping with pets and found that sleep quality can improve — when your dog is under 40 pounds (18kg) — but may worsen with larger breeds. The researchers tracked the sleep of 40 adults and their dogs over a 7-night period, and found that having a dog in the bedroom — even if not on the bed — gave participants a greater sense of security, reduced nighttime anxiety, and helped them fall asleep faster.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Niall Horan knows the ‘one direction’ he’s heading: toward the set of “The Voice”. After a 2-year hiatus from NBC’s singing competition series, the ‘Slow Hands’ singer will return to the iconic red chair as a coach for season 28. The One Direction star excelled in the role in seasons 23 and 24, winning both installments with contestants Gina Miles and Huntley. Season 28 will premiere this fall.

Amy Poehler is making her long-awaited return to comedy TV. Peacock announced they’ve picked up a new series from Poehler and Mike Schur, who created “Parks and Recreation” and found further success with “The Good Place” and “A Man on the Inside”. According to the logline, the upcoming series finds “four women working at an archeological dig in Greece” who are all at “wildly different crossroads in their lives.” It’ll be Poehler’s first foray into TV since the 2015 series finale of Parks and Rec.

DID YA KNOW!?

A cloud weighs around a million tonnes. A cloud typically has a volume of around 1km3 and a density of around 1.003kg per m3 – that's a density that’s around 0.4 per cent lower than the air surrounding it (this is how they are able to float).

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Apple has once again been named the most valuable brand in the world.

A Polish company called Volonaut says it has built something straight out of “Star Wars” — a real-life flying speeder bike. Their new creation, the AirBike, is a sleek, one-person vehicle that can supposedly fly up to 200kph (124mph). Unlike typical drones or hoverbikes, it doesn’t use propellers. Instead, it’s powered by jet propulsion, and stabilized by a smart flight computer that lets it hover and stay easy to control. Inventor Tomasz Patan spent months refining the design, finally achieving stable flight in May 2023. Details are still scarce, though — no word yet on when it’ll be sold — or for how much. WEIRD NEWS

About 25,000 residents of the town of Lice, in Turkey involuntarily got high after police burned 20 tons of seized cannabis in the town center. The incineration, part of a large anti-narcotics operation, caused lingering smoke that left locals complaining of dizziness, nausea, and other…ahem!…symptoms for days. Some residents sought medical help as air quality deteriorated. Critics condemned the method, and complained the fact that the name of the town, LICE, was spelled out using the burning bags of weed in the town square only added insult to injury.

QUESTION OF THE DAY
