SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Every year, schools hand out graduation awards – and of course, these awards usually go to students with the highest grades. But some psychologists are saying this focus on academic achievement might actually backfire, even for top students. Dr. Dina Lafoyiannis, a Toronto-based child psychologist, says awards that only recognize marks can increase anxiety and hurt motivation. She believes we should celebrate a wider range of skills — things like collaboration, communication, adaptability, and leadership. And Dr. Linda Iwenofu agrees. She says research shows students thrive when effort and growth are recognized — not just results. Focusing just on grades can leave many students feeling excluded or inadequate, especially in middle school, when peer approval matters most. Both experts suggest a rethink: One that would involve celebrating creativity, perseverance, and progress. It could lead to happier, more motivated students in the long run.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
Ahead of the premiere of “Monster” Season 3, Netflix is already prepping a 4th installment of the true-crime franchise from creators/executive producers Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. It will tell the story of Lizzie Borden, who was tried and acquitted of the 1892 axe murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts. Casting for the lead role is currently underway, with the new season eyeing a fall start of production.
The trailer for “Project Hail Mary” has officially broken the record to become the biggest original film movie trailer ever — with 400 million views in its first week. That also marks the biggest trailer launch in Amazon MGM Studios’ history. Directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller took to social media to celebrate, writing: “Holy Moly. Thank you all you glorious generous fans of movies/books/near light speed space travel/the Sun for pushing the trailer for ‘Project Hail Mary’ past 400 million views.” Project Hail Mary flies into theaters on March 20, 2026. NBC has announced that the “Wicked” concert special, led by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, will air on November 6, two weeks ahead of the release of the sequel “Wicked: For Good”. Erivo and Grande will be joined by their co-stars and other surprise guests to perform songs from the first movie — “and maybe, just maybe, a little bit from the upcoming film,” the network said in its release.
The “Big Bang Theory” spinoff “Stuart Fails to Save the Universe” has officially been greenlit at HBO Max. The show was originally announced as being in development in April 2023. The cast of the series is made up of Big Bang Theory alums Kevin Sussman, Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn, and John Ross Bowie. The logline states: “Comic book store owner ‘Stuart Bloom’ (Sussman) is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon.
DID YA KNOW!?
French Olympic fencer Ysaora Thibus was cleared of a doping allegation after successfully arguing that the banned substance she tested positive for had entered her system by kissing her partner over 9 days. The Court of Arbitration for Sport had challenged the explanation that Thibus was contaminated “through kissing with her then partner, who had been using a product containing ostarine without her knowledge.”

OF THE DAY
NASA scientists have said evidence shows our galaxy will end in 4 billion years.
Back in the early 2000s, you were either Team LimeWire or Team Napster — both let you download free music, usually illegally. Napster was eventually hit with multiple lawsuits that shut it down. Fast forward to today: Napster’s back — but it has ditched the MP3s. Under new ownership, it has been relaunched as a “conversational AI platform”. The site consists of a number of “AI companions” that are trained to be experts in various topics like medicine, public policy, architecture and engineering. The company said it utilized AI models from OpenAI and Gemini to make a new “large persona model” that is trained on 30 different psychometric characteristics.

WEIRD NEWS
Imagine getting hundreds of oversized Amazon packages that you never ordered – and then they just keep on coming for over a year. That’s what happened to “Kay,” (not her real name) a woman in San Jose, whose driveway and carport were taken over by endless boxes of faux-leather car seat covers. The culprit? A shady overseas seller on Amazon using her home as a fake return address. The products didn’t fit most buyers’ vehicles, and instead of refunding them, the seller had returns sent to Kay’s address — leaving her stuck with the piles of packages, and the buyers stuck without a refund. Or, as she put it: “This is thousands of dollars they’ve paid to send these boxes back to my house.” Despite multiple complaints to Amazon, the packages kept on arriving, and she says Amazon even suggested she should fix the issue by giving the packages away, or taking them back to USPS and FedEx. Finally, after media intervention, Amazon removed the items and promised to fix the issue for good.

THE LIST
FRUGAL RULES:
A recent BuzzFeed thread started with the question: “If you grew up poor but now have money, tell us the “frugal” habits you still do to this day to save.” Here are some of the best, most honest answers…
☞ “I use paper towels to dry my hands, and then fold them to save for cleaning up after the cats! I don’t have to feel guilty about wasting the paper.”
☞ “I have plenty of money now, but I still buy a lot of my clothes, shoes, and accessories on eBay and the RealReal. Why pay full price?”
☞ “Cut cream bottles, etc, to use every little last bit of the product..”
☞ “(I) have a drawer for disposable silverware, napkins, and condiments I get with to-go orders. You never know when you may run out or need one.”
☞ “The first thing I look at on a menu is the prices. Growing up, I was conditioned to order the cheapest thing, and always something cheaper than what the host was getting.” (Same, lady, same…!)
☞ “Why would anybody spend money on Tupperware when you can reuse yogurt/sour cream/cottage cheese containers?”
☞ “Washing out the plastic bags.” (There’s frugal – and then there’s cheap!)
☞ “I still refuse to pay anything extra when it comes to airfare. $50 to choose my seat? Guess I’ll be in the middle then, with the snacks I brought from home in my bag.”
