SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Are you planning on moving back in with your parents? You’re far from alone. Nearly half of parents say an adult child between 18 and 35 has “boomeranged” home, according to a Thrivent survey. And while saving money on rent and food sounds like a win, it might come with a hidden cost: budgeting skills. Only 46% of those who moved back home earned high marks from their parents for their budgeting, compared to 63% of those who never left. Why? Living at home often means fewer expenses—and fewer chances to practice real-world money management. Experts say that when the financial pressure’s off, so is the motivation to budget. That can be a blessing, but without the structure of having to manage all of one’s bills, it can also slow down financial independence. The key, according to the people who know, is to give those boomerangers clear expectations of their financial responsibilities in their parents’ home – and to have regular conversations about money management.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Jon M. Chu is putting the pedal to the metal. The director of “Crazy Rich Asians” and both “Wicked” films will be helming a live-action “Hot Wheels” movie. Mattel’s chief content officer said in a statement: “Jon’s ability to craft rich, elaborate worlds with a distinct point of view makes him the ideal storyteller to bring Hot Wheels to life.” Writing partners Juel Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier will pen the script for the movie, which is based on the toy line. No release date yet.

Tom Cruise hit the brakes on Joseph Kosinski’s adaptation of “Ford v Ferrari” when he learned that he would have limited time behind the wheel, according to Brad Pitt. He had been initially been attached to star opposite Cruise in an early version of the film about race car driver Ken Miles and automotive designer Carroll Shelby. In an interview, Pitt said: “What it came down to is that we both wanted to drive. When Tom realized that Carroll Shelby would not be driving much in the movie, it didn’t come through.” Those roles ultimately went to Christian Bale and Matt Damon.

Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are saying “Ciao!” to an Italian soccer team. The couple purchased Campobasso Football Club in 2022, and ESPN documented everything along the way as they tackled ownership of an Italian soccer team. The resulting 4-part docuseries will premiere on July 29. “Running with the Wolves” will give viewers an inside look as the daytime TV stars set out to turn a “gritty” team known as the “Lupi” — which is Italian for “wolves” — into a winning organization. Ripa says in the trailer: “I thought we were just going to buy a property in Italy.” Consuelos replies with a smirk: “Well, there’s a stadium…” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/54y5s3hw

Denis Villeneuve‘s upcoming return to Arrakis is officially titled “Dune: Part Three.” Reports had called the film “Dune Messiah,” a nod to the 1969 book from Frank Herbert that the film will adapt as its storyline, following ‘Paul “Muad’Dib” Atreides’ as he takes over as emperor. Filming on Dune: Part Three is set to begin, with Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya reprising their roles. Jason Momoa has also confirmed he’ll return for Part Three, after featuring in the first “Dune” but not in “Part Two.”

DID YA KNOW!?

These days, both male and female pro tennis players are serving faster than ever before, with some regularly reaching service speeds that were once thought to be impossible. At this year’s Wimbledon, fans witnessed the fastest serve in the tournament’s 148-year history, when Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard unleashed a 153mph (246km/h) rocket in his first-round match against Taylor Fritz.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A study shows that men who carry their cell phone in their pocket have sperm counts that are nearly 10% lower than those who don’t.

Yes, it’s a known fact the many of us love our cars – and think of them as something more than a way to get form Place A to Place B. But according to a new survey, one-third of drivers love their vehicle so much that they’ve given it a name. For some, it’s something cute like Buttercup’s Folly, or bold like Road Warrior, or gloriously honest like The Rolling Turd. The poll of 2,000 vehicle owners in the US found that Gen X and millennials are the biggest car-namers, with over 40% giving their ride a handle, while boomers are least likely to name their wheels. Pop culture faves like Batmobile and The Millennium Falcon are big, and so are animal-inspired names like Party Chicken and The Slug. One very grounded driver calls their car The Grocery Getter. Oh, and fun fact: 12% of people believe cars actually have feelings. Gen Z leads the pack on that one. Here some more of the wackier car names Americans have chosen: Love Bug, Puddle Jumper, Old Flame, Road Warrior, Nasty Beast, Silver Bullet, Green Machine, Turtle, and Blue Goose.

WEIRD NEWS

A Katonah NY man has developed a type of house paint that changes color with the seasons – and he thinks his invention could help fight climate change. When he bought his home, designer Joe Doucet wondered: “What’s the best color to paint a house in a place with hot summers and cold winters?” After testing 3D-printed models, he found black walls helped in winter, while white kept things cooler in summer — but painting a house twice a year isn’t exactly practical. Inspired by mood rings, he developed a special thermochromic paint that changes color with temperature. It turns lighter when it’s warm, and darker when it’s cold, reducing the need for heating and A/C. And the new climate-responsive paints don’t necessarily need to be, well, black and white: The paint can be tinted almost any color, meaning a house could turn light blue in warmer months before turning a darker blue in winter, for example. Doucet says his color-shifting paint could cut home energy use by up to 30% in temperate climates. While it might take 5-10 years to reach the market, he’s hopeful a partner — like a major paint or chemical company — will help bring it to life.
