SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
It turns out, vegetarians might not be the peace-loving, go-with-the-flow types that you might imagine. A new study from the US and Poland found that people who follow plant-based diets actually score higher than meat-eaters on values like personal power, achievement, and independence. Yep – ‘veggies over values’ like conformity, tradition, and even caring for close friends and family. Instead of being all about harmony and kindness, vegetarians came across in the study as more driven, individualistic, and even a little rebellious. They were also found to be less likely to care about ‘fitting in’ or preserving social norms — which makes sense, considering vegetarianism still goes against the grain in many places. Researchers say choosing a minority lifestyle like this often means facing social pushback, so maybe vegetarianism attracts (or builds) stronger-willed people.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
An all-time movie classic is being spun off for the small screen. It’s been revealed that the rights holders behind “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” are cooking up a new series adaptation. Speaking on a podcast, producer Paul Zaentz, the nephew of the film’s original producer Saul Zaentz, announced that he has “signed an agreement with (writer) Ken Kesey’s widow to develop a TV series which we’ll make through the point of view of the ‘Chief’ for the first season.” He indicated that in subsequent seasons, viewers will “see what happens to the Chief after he escapes [from the psychiatric hospital].” Chief Bromden was memorably played in the 1975 film by Will Sampson.
There will be no 5th season for HGTV‘s “Battle on the Beach”. Alison Victoria, who co-hosted the beachfront property renovation series with Ty Pennington and Taniya Nayak, revealed the news on a recent podcast. Quote: “I love that show. It was so fun and funny. And then all of a sudden, I watched the episode, I’m like, well, where’d all that [great content] go?” She pointed out that there is a lot of content to “put into 42 minutes”, but, she asked, “Where is it? Where’s the great editing?” She mused that “you lose a show that way”.
Kelly Osbourne is building upon her already great week by adding another hosting gig to her résumé. After getting engaged to Slipknot rocker Sid Wilson at her dad Ozzy Osbourne’s final Black Sabbath show on Saturday, she’s now set to host “Lego Masters Jr.” next month on Fox. The child-friendly special event spinoff will run for 4 weeks starting Aug. 18, the network announced.
Danai Gurira is reuniting with her “Black Panther” co-star Michael B. Jordan for a reimagining of “The Thomas Crown Affair”. The original Thomas Crown movie, made in 1968, starred Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway and involved a man who organizes bank robberies for fun but meets his match when he falls for (or maybe not) the insurance investigator hot on his tail. The 1999 remake starred Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo.
DID YA KNOW!?
In the UAE, a mountain highway has been turned into a musical experience — literally. On a stretch of the E84 highway heading into Fujairah, rumble strips in the right lane play Beethoven’s ‘Ninth Symphony’ as you drive over them. It amounts to about one kilometer of classical music under your tires. The idea isn’t just for fun — it’s part of an art project called the “Street of Music,” and while similar projects exist in other countries, Fujairah wanted one of its own. The rumble strip initially looks like a larger version of the dash lines separating the 3-lane highway, until you hit the first block, and the grooves of the road combine with the speed of the vehicle to make music.

OF THE DAY
Toyota is recalling approximately 55,000 2023-2024 Prius and Prius HEV vehicles in the U.S.
Imagine a messaging app that doesn’t need Wi-Fi, cell service, or even your phone number. That’s exactly what Jack Dorsey just built. The Twitter co-founder spent the long weekend creating Bitchat, a peer-to-peer messaging app that works completely over Bluetooth. No servers. No accounts. No internet. Just your phone talking directly to others nearby. The messages are encrypted, they vanish after a while, and never leave your device — perfect for people who care about privacy, or want to stay connected during outages or blackouts. The app, described as being like WhatsApp — if WhatsApp didn’t report to a tech giant and worked off-grid — is now in beta on TestFlight, with future updates planned to add WiFi Direct for faster, longer-range messaging. Word is that Dorsey’s new creation could become the next big thing in decentralized communication.

WEIRD NEWS
A new survey reveals people these days are getting very creative with their condiment combos. A poll of Americans uncovered some of the wildest ‘food and dip’ combos that people claim to enjoy, including: French fries with tartar sauce, scrambled eggs with BBQ sauce, and pickles dipped in buffalo sauce. One respondent even confessed to putting Worcestershire on mac n’ cheese — and ranch in ramen noodles. When it comes to favorite sauces, barbecue, ranch, and honey mustard were found to rule fridge shelves.

THE LIST
The Facebook page known as “Kale Salad” reposted a meme from ‘Kristen’, who wrote:
“Flour company: What if we sell it in a paper bag that’s not fully sealed at the bottom?”
That question prompted a flood of similarly-themed questions from commenters – and many of them are golden. Some examples…
⇒ Brown sugar people: Let’s have this come in a non resealable bag so it’ll be rock hard and unusable. Then we can sell more.
⇒ Baby wipes company: What if we put them in a plastic packet and tangle them all together so you get 10 at once?
⇒ Pasta Company: What if we put it in bags that rip into oblivion the first time you open them and add a ‘reseal’ sticker that’s not sticky?
⇒ Pillow company: How about we fill them so that one isn’t just quite enough but two are too much?
⇒ Cold and flu pills company: When they’re at their weakest, let’s make opening the packet impossible.
⇒ Oven company: Why don’t we tint the glass so the food looks cooked before it is?
⇒ Cling wrap company: Let’s provide a serrated cutting strip that’s absolutely useless, and also let’s make cling wrap that clings to itself and nothing else.
⇒ Scissor company: What if we make the scissor packaging completely inaccessible — unless you already have a pair of scissors?
⇒ Fruit cup company: Fill it to the brim with sticky juice and make the lid impossible to peel off without spilling it everywhere.
