THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!
Dear John,
I'm leaving for college. It’s a fun and exciting time in my life. But there’s one problem. I have a boyfriend who is now a senior in high school. I planned to break up with him before summer ended, but I didn’t. My friends say I should break up with him now and start fresh because it’s a new chapter in my life. I like this guy, and he’s done nothing to deserve a breakup, but I am not in love. My friends say it’s just a high school thing, and I’ll be wasting my first-year student year if I don’t dump him now. Should you always go to college single? Is it okay to break up by phone or text in my situation? Or should I wait until Thanksgiving and do the old “Turkey Drop?” No matter how I think about it, I feel like a bad person. What should I do?

SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
If your car breaks down, and it’ll cost you $500 to fix it, are you OK to cover it? Many Gen Zers would be up the proverbial creek, according to a Credit One Bank survey. It found that 62% of Gen Z have no emergency savings. That’s almost double the rate of baby boomers. 60% of those under 35 said they use credit for emergencies. Nearly half of Gen Z would even go over their credit limit if needed. This illustrates a growing financial gap between generations, and an increasing reliance on credit rather than cash safety nets, according to analysts. The survey also found that two-thirds of consumers have 6 months or less in savings, with Gen X the least prepared. And 76% lack a credit card set aside for emergencies, relying instead on everyday-use cards.

Universal Pictures has announced that it is moving the “Shrek 5” release date from December, 2026 to June 30, 2027. Why? Basically, because summer is a better time for the mega return of the green fairy-tale ogre and friends; that’s the season he’s always dwelled in. Summer 2027 will mark 17 years since the previous ‘Shrek’ movie, 2010’s “Shrek Forever After”. Shrek cast members Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz are all coming back to voice their roles of ‘Shrek’, ‘Donkey’ and ‘Fiona’. As previously announced, Zendaya has also joined the voice cast.
“Star Trek” legend William Shatner is 94 years young, and…is launching a new career -as a boy band member? In a cheeky Instagram post, he posted a pic of himself with Backstreet Boys member Nick Carter and actor Paul Wesley. His caption: “Introducing NBP…the Older Boys Band! We are working on our first single: ‘I Want It That Way Because I May Be Dead Tomorrow!’ (Laughing face emoji).” Wesley has been starring as the young ‘Captain James T. Kirk’ in “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/msvrjzxz
A “Downton Abbey” primetime special is set to air on NBC to celebrate the third and final film in the “Downton” franchise before its theatrical release. NBC will air “Downton Abbey Celebrates The Grand Finale” on Sept. 10. The one-hour special will feature conversations with the cast of the film as they reunite in London at the Savoy Hotel to share memories and never-before-heard stories from their time with the show and the films.
DID YA KNOW!?
Hippos can’t swim. Hippos really do have big bones, so big and dense, in fact, that they’re barely buoyant at all. They don’t swim and instead perform a slow-motion gallop on the riverbed or on the sea floor. In fact, hippos can even sleep underwater, thanks to a built-in reflex that allows them to bob up, take a breath, and sink back down without waking.

OF THE DAY
The inaugural World Humanoid Robot Games recently began in Beijing. More than 100 international teams will participate in events, including soccer, races and gymnastics, as well as dancing and scenario competitions. Over 500 robots will participate. Competitions are being held at top venues like the National Speed Skating Oval (“Ice Ribbon”) and the Bird’s Nest.
Smartphones have all but ended real voice conversations, especially among teenagers, according to a new report in The Conversation. Yes, young people seem to have their phones constantly in hand, but they rarely answer calls, frustrating many parents. This reflects a shift in how 13 to 18-year-olds communicate. For them, voice calls are now rare – usually reserved for emergencies or urgent situations, while texting, voice notes, and social media messages dominate daily interactions. This isn’t about laziness, but a preference for communication that offers more control over timing, emotions, and self-expression. Experts say the “unreachable teen” stereotype highlights deeper changes in social habits and digital etiquette among youth today.

WEIRD NEWS
A tractor-trailer crash in Pennsylvania sent hundreds of hot dogs spilling across Interstate 83, causing a traffic jam in both directions. The truck reportedly suffered a mechanical issue during morning rush hour and collided with a car before scraping a concrete divider, tearing open the trailer and launching its cargo of tube steaks across the road. Four people were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Cleanup crews used a front-end loader to scoop up the mess, which was no…uh…picnic. As Shrewsbury Fire Chief Brad Dauberman put it: “I can tell you personally, hot dogs are very slippery.”
