SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

You may have heard the theory that women on dating apps are only chasing the top 20% of men — but new research says it’s actually the guys who are reaching too high. A study of nearly 3,000 users of a Czech dating app found that men mostly swiped on women rated as more “desirable” than themselves, while women tended to go for men closer to their own level. Since there were more male users, women ranked higher overall in the dating pool. Even so, women sometimes picked slightly less desirable partners, and most successful matches happened between people of similar appeal. The takeaway? Guys might have better luck if they set more realistic expectations. As the researchers put it, the final matches often reflect women’s preferences — probably because they get more options to choose from – so they usually make the final call.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

It looks like there’s still a healthy appetite for “Happy Gilmore,” with “Happy Gilmore 2” teeing off with the biggest US opening weekend viewership of all-time for a Netflix film. The sequel scored a whopping 46.7 million views in its first 3 days on Netflix, soaring to the top of the streamer’s most-watched English-language films list during the week of July 21, and becoming the most-watched title on Netflix during the week. Happy Gilmore 2 now ranks as the highest opening for any Adam Sandler Netflix film, ever.

With “Together” having hit theaters, audiences for the “body horror romance” should come primed for a disgusting date night. But in case date night falls apart for any viewers, its distributor Neon is offering free couples therapy for anyone who sees the film during its opening weekend. Couples can upload a photo of their ticket to the therapy service OurRitual for a free session. Anyone who continues after their first session will receive an additional 20% discount. Together stars real-life spouses Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple in crisis. As they move to the countryside to start a new life, they find themselves at the center of a body horror nightmare.

Harrison Ford, who just turned 83, isn’t ready to stop booking gigs. The actor, whose legendary roles include playing ‘Han Solo’ and “Indiana Jones”, was asked if he’ll ever retire. His answer: “No. That’s one of the things I thought was attractive about the job of an actor, was that they need old people, too, to play old people’s parts.” Ford has starred in over 60 films.

DID YA KNOW!?

NASA genuinely faked part of the Moon landing. While Neil Armstrong's first steps on the lunar surface were categorically not faked, the astronaut quarantine protocol when the astronauts arrived back on Earth was largely just one big show.

WEIRD NEWS

A TikTok video from a Tampa post office is going viral after a woman spotted what looks like a tip jar at a US Postal Service counter. In the clip, Kathy Jennice recorded a clip showing a basket of cash sitting next to a receipt printer and asked, “Is this the new normal?” The video has racked up nearly 30,000 views — and plenty of disbelief. Commenters were quick to point out that USPS employees are federal workers and legally barred from accepting tips. Some postal workers chimed in themselves, calling it a fireable offense. One offered a possible explanation, commenting: “It’s our swear jar for when the Karens show up.” https://tinyurl.com/y3n4kurs
