SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

By some estimates, more than a third of calls from unknown numbers are spam or scams. About 31% are nuisance calls and another 4% are outright fraud, often impersonating government agencies. Other scams target things like Amazon shoppers and crypto investors, or are from supposed banking or tech support reps. But did you know there’s an iPhone setting that stops annoying scam calls? On iPhones, you can block unknown numbers via Settings > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers. Doing this sends calls from non-contacts straight to voicemail. This thwarts scammers who prefer live conversations, and legitimate messages can be checked later in voicemail-to-text. BTW, Android devices have similar tools, though settings vary. On most, go to Settings > Caller ID and Spam, then enable spam filtering or blocking.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Paramount has inked a major 7-year media rights agreement worth an average $1.1 billion annually with TKO Group to become the exclusive home of all UFC events in the U.S. starting in 2026. In a major shift, as part of the agreement, UFC and Paramount will move away from UFC’s existing pay-per-view model in favor of making premium events available at no additional cost to Paramount+ U.S. subscribers. They said this shift in distribution strategy will unlock greater accessibility and discoverability for sports fans, and drive further subscriber growth for Paramount+.

Sharon Stone hopes to make a biopic about her late friend Phyllis Diller. Stone admitted she’s “desperate to play” Diller, who died at age 95 in 2012. She reflected on her time with the comedian and how Diller prepared her to lead a potential biopic, which Stone is “trying” to make happen. Stone told Business Insider that she and Diller were close friends, and when she told the comedian that she wanted to play her someday, “she sat down and taught me her laugh. She made me practice her laugh!”

Tom Holland is officially back in the swing of things as “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” kicks off filming in Glasgow, Scotland. In a behind-the-scenes clip shared by Sony, Holland suited up as ‘Spider-Man’ for the first day of filming the 4th installment in the MCU web-slinger franchise. In the vid, he says: “I feel good, man…It’s also the first time we’ve ever had fans on set for day one.” After greeting some cosplaying fans, he filmed a scene where he ripped off the top hatch of the vehicle while it drove through the city. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is scheduled for release in July 2026. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2txs2xfa

DID YA KNOW!?

Deaf people are known to use sign language in their sleep. A case study of a 71-year-old man with rapid eye movement disorder and a severe hearing impairment showed him using fluent sign language in his sleep, with researchers able to get an idea of what he was dreaming about thanks to those signs.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A team of student engineers at the University of Warwick, U.K., have developed a car that runs on human waste.

In 1986, Doritos struck gold with Cool Ranch — a bold, tangy flavor that became a fan favorite and expanded into everything from taco shells to popcorn. Now, nearly 40 years later, Doritos is hoping to recreate that magic with its newest permanent flavor: Golden Sriracha. Inspired by the wildly popular chili sauce, the flavor aims to capture the same mass appeal as Cool Ranch and Nacho Cheese. As snacking trends shift toward health-conscious choices and generic brands, Doritos is doubling down on boldness. Golden Sriracha is their latest “mega flavor,” crafted to stand out in a crowded snack aisle.

WEIRD NEWS

A new prescription eye drop that could allow many people to put down their reading glasses has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. Known as Vizz, the once-daily drops treat age-related blurry near vision — also known as presbyopia — for up to 10 hours at a time. While it’s not a permanent solution, it may allow users to forget about their reading glasses or contact lenses for much of the day. Presbyopia is a common condition, particularly in those over the age of 40, who begin to have difficulty reading words up close as their vision begins to deteriorate with age.
