SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

A 2022 study of nearly 10,000 kids found that those who spent more time playing video games gained an extra 2.5 IQ points over 2 years, even after factoring in genetics and socio-economic background. TV and social media showed no effect, suggesting gaming may offer small cognitive benefits for children. The IQ increase was based on the kids’ performance on tasks that included reading comprehension, visual-spatial processing, and a task focused on memory, flexible thinking, and self-control.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

“Weapons” had the upper hand in its box office duel against “Freakier Friday,” though both new releases drew strong openings as the summer tentpole season begins to wind down. Weapons won the weekend with a stellar $41 million opening domestically. “Freakier Friday” opened to an estimated $31 million, pretty good for a comedy these days. “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” came third, with a weekend haul of about $17 million.

James Gunn is shutting down rumors about ‘Robin’ appearing in “The Batman Part II.” After fan speculation spread online that the ‘Boy Wonder’ would appear in Matt Reeves’ highly anticipated sequel, Gunn set the record straight, writing: “Guys please stop believing this nonsense. I think 6 of us have read the script. No one (else) knows anything about ‘the Batman 2.’”

Scott Cooper’s biopic “Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere” starring Jeremy Allen White will premiere as the Spotlight Gala selection of the New York Film Festival on September 28, with the Boss in attendance. It’s set at an early-’80s crossroads in Springsteen’s career when, still negotiating the transformative waves of his rising fame, he crafted the intensely personal acoustic songs that would become his mythic album “Nebraska”, at the same time that he was recording demos for “Born in the U.S.A.”, which would catapult him to global superstardom.

DID YA KNOW!?

Bananas are radioactive. Due to being rich in potassium, every banana is actually slightly radioactive thanks to containing the natural isotope potassium-40. Interestingly, your body contains around 16mg of potassium-40, meaning you’re around 280 times more radioactive than a banana already. Any excess potassium-40 you gain from a banana is excreted out within a few hours.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Oreo and Reese’s have teamed up for the sweet collab that fans have been begging for. Despite being owned by different companies — Oreo by Mondelēz and Reese’s by Hershey — they’ve hooked up to launch 2 new treats blending their iconic flavors. The first creation is the Reese’s Oreo Cup: a peanut butter cup wrapped in Oreo’s chocolate and white crème, filled with cookie crumbs. Yum. The second is Oreo’s re-release of a 2014 cookie that used Reese’s peanut butter, in addition to Oreo cookie crumbs in the filling.

WEIRD NEWS

For some people, watching others fidget isn’t just annoying—it’s unbearable. This common reaction, affecting about one in 3 people, is known as misokinesia, meaning “hatred of movements.” It’s a visual counterpart to misophonia, where certain repetitive sounds trigger irritation. While misokinesia has only recently started getting scientific attention, it’s surprisingly widespread. Researchers say the discomfort comes not from noise, but from simply seeing someone tap, bounce, or squirm—making everyday moments unexpectedly stressful for those affected.

QUESTION OF THE DAY
