SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Exercise isn’t just good for the body — it may boost the brain too. A 2019 study from Oregon Health and Science University found that even short bursts of activity can improve learning. Researchers discovered that brief exercise in mice activated a gene which strengthens connections between neurons in the hippocampus, the brain’s learning and memory hub. The mice ran a few kilometers in 2 hours, the equivalent of 4,000 human steps, and showed increased synapses afterward. This suggests that even quick daily workouts can give the brain a “supercharge” for learning.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

In case you missed it, Reba McEntire and actor Rex Linn announced their engagement on the Emmys red carpet Sunday after 5 years of dating. McEntire confirmed the happy news during an interview with E! News, when the reporter referred to Linn as McEntire’s “fiancĂ©.” The country superstar coyly responded: “We’re having a blast on ‘Happy’s Place’ and so glad to be here tonight.” McEntire first met and became friends with Linn on the set of the 1980 TV movie, “The Gambler.”

Chris Parnell, Katelyn Tarver, and David Hornsby have joined the recurring cast of Netflix‘s untitled Will Ferrell golf series, working alongside Ferrell, Molly Shannon, Jimmy Tatro and Fortune Feimster. The 10-episode series follows ‘Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins’, a fictional golf legend played by Ferrell. Parnell is the third “SNL” alum to join the comedy, following Ferrell and Shannon.

DID YA KNOW!?

All mammals get goosebumps. When your hair stands on end, tiny muscles contract at each hair's base which distorts the skin to create goosebumps. This process is called piloerection and is present in all mammals. Hair or fur is used to trap an insulating air layer.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A study found that 72% of pet owners have upgraded or rearranged their home for their pet’s comfort

Call them airplane airbags. In response to the tragic Air India crash, two engineers have unveiled “Project REBIRTH”, a Michelin Man-style, AI-powered crash survival system. The concept: planes wrapped in external airbags that deploy mid-air to cushion passengers and the fuselage. Reverse thrust, impact-absorbing fluids, and smart sensors all join the puffed-up spectacle. If a crash is “unavoidable below 3,000 feet,” the airbags inflate automatically — although the captain can abort if they prefer a more traditional descent. The creators describe it as a promise that even failure can have a second chance. While it’s a finalist for the James Dyson Award (which celebrates students and recent graduates who create innovative solutions to real-world problems), critics note this sky-high straitjacket seems more sci-fi fantasy than imminent reality. Still, they hope one day it might save lives.

WEIRD NEWS

A Kentucky nurse had an unexpected patient when she rescued 2 baby raccoons from a moonshine-filled dumpster outside her health department. The animals had fallen into fermented peaches tossed by a nearby distillery, leaving one unresponsive. Using her “motherly instinct,” the nurse pulled the raccoon out and performed chest compressions until it revived — her first-ever attempt at animal CPR. Nicknamed ‘Otis Campbell’ after the town drunk on “The Andy Griffith Show”, the raccoon later sobered up at a vet’s office before being released into the wild. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/55zpc959
