Dollar stores are playing a growing role in how many of us eat, but a new study shows their negative impact on diet may be smaller than you might think. Researchers tracked more than 183,000 households between 2008 and 2020 and found dollar stores’ share of calories that we purchase nearly doubled, from 3.4% to 6.5%. Foods sold there were found to score lower on the USDA’s Healthy Eating Index, averaging 38.4 compared to nearly 50 at grocery and club stores. But it was also found that households that shopped heavily at dollar stores had only slightly lower overall diet scores. Demographic trends show higher use among rural, lower-income, and female-headed households, as well as some ethnicities. The researchers believe that many shoppers use dollar stores strategically, buying cheaper staples and snacks there, while also shopping at other retailers for fresher, healthier options.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
In celebration of the 25th anniversary of “Gilmore Girls” this October, a new documentary, “Searching For Stars Hollow”, is in the works with stars Kelly Bishop, Jared Padalecki and Chad Michael Murray. Searching For Stars Hollow will examine “the beloved show’s role in American cultural history,” according to a press release. It’ll include never-before-seen interviews with cast members, and behind-the-scenes stories from crewmembers, writers and directors.
Netflix has landed an untitled drama project starring and executive produced by Matthew McConaughey and Cole Hauser. Details are sketchy, but the project is believed to be set in the world of football, and it originated as a show about 2 brothers, played by McConaughey and Hauser. The 2 actors have been friends for decades, and first starred together in 1993’s “Dazed and Confused”. Word is that they have been considering the idea of this new project ever since.
Ron Howard, an Oscar-winning director for over 5 decades, has worked with nearly everyone in Hollywood, from Jimmy Stewart to Tom Cruise — and Cheryl Howard. If you look closely at any of his films, you’ll probably spot a cameo by Cheryl, his wife of 50 years. That includes his latest, “Eden”, a true 1930s survival thriller. Howard likens his wife’s appearances to “Where’s Waldo?”, saying: “You have to really know what you’re looking for.” And he had some difficulty casting his wife in his latest film, because it takes place on a desert island, which was only visited by an all-male crew. Quote: “So I told Cheryl she was going to have to be a guy, and we put a little mustache on her and she got a little wig, and she was somewhat a feminine food server at a banquet…on the beach.”
Hilaria Baldwin is headed to the ballroom. The mom of 7 will compete on the upcoming 34th season of “Dancing with the Stars”. She joins previously announced celeb contestants Robert Irwin, Alix Earle and “Mormon Wives” stars Jen Affleck and Whitney Leavitt. Hilaria and her husband Alec Baldwin have been getting some practice in ahead of her ballroom debut, posting several videos of them dancing and practicing her moves, and even suggesting the show bring her husband on as a contestant.

A study says that helping others could be good for your mental health.
Apple is rolling out a major new feature in iOS 26 this September called Call Screening, designed to help you dodge spam and scam calls. Here’s how it works: when an unknown number calls, the iPhone asks the caller to state their name and reason for calling. That info is then transcribed and shown to you in real time. You can reply with text prompts, hang up, or answer — without having to pick up first. If the caller bails (as scammers often do), you won’t even get a notification. The feature will be available on the iPhone 17 lineup and all models from 2019 onward.
A basketball card featuring Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant sold for $12.9 million on Saturday, making it the most expensive-ever sports card. The 2007-08 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection Dual Logoman, which was sold in Dallas through Heritage Auctions, features images of the 2 stars, as well as their signatures and NBA logo patches from their jerseys. The buyer’s identity was not revealed. This Dual Logoman card is the only one created that includes only Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant – making it the most sought-after example of the incredible Upper Deck Logoman series, and is especially valuable due to Bryant’s 2020 death.

A Michelin-starred chef has turned pet cuisine into human fine dining with a surprising creation: the cat food burger. Chef Alice Ostan, collaborating with London-based cat food brand KatKin, crafted a patty from meats typically used in premium feline meals. The mix of meats is coated in panko breadcrumbs, topped it with ricotta, parmesan, lemon spread, and smoky bacon jam, then placed it on a ciabatta bun with lettuce, sun-dried tomatoes, cucumber, and hot honey. Despite its unusual origins, tasters were impressed, insisting they never would have guessed the burger contained cat food. The experiment highlights KatKin’s focus on real meat. It’s unknown at this time if this cat burger will ever make it onto a restaurant menu.
