SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
Chocolate fans, get ready for some sweet news! Scientists have taken a major step toward solving the mystery of why some chocolate bars taste amazing while others fall flat. Researchers at the University of Nottingham created a special mix of just 9 microbes that can bring out the rich, complex flavors of fine chocolate. In lab tests, chocolate made with this starter tasted like high-end Madagascan bars, not the plain bulk stuff. Just like winemakers use specific yeasts to perfect wine, chocolate makers could soon use these microbes to guide fermentation. That means better, more reliable chocolate, and maybe even new flavors. Imagine a world where every chocolate bar is as delicious as your favorite fancy treat…no matter where the beans come from.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
Steve Carell and John Krasinski made an unexpected appearance on the first day of filming for “The Paper”, the new spin-off of “The Office”. They stopped by the set at Universal Studios in LA to wish the cast good luck, says Sabrina Impacciatore, who plays managing editor ‘Esmeralda’ in the upcoming series. Carell and Krasinski happened to be filming a commercial for Italian coffee brand Lavazza next door on the same day. Impacciatore described the coincidence as a “blessing”. The Paper, created by Greg Daniels, follows the documentary crew from The Office as they turn their cameras on the staff of The Truth Teller, a struggling newspaper in Toledo, Ohio. The series premieres next Thursday on Peacock.
Netflix is taking another run at “Trainwreck”, the documentary franchise that delivered films including “Poop Cruise”, which told the story of how a luxury cruise trip from Texas to Mexico proved catastrophic for its 4,000 passengers after raw sewage leaked all over the ship. Netflix and Raw Television have not decided on the topics that will make up the second run of Trainwreck, but they will similarly feature a range of topics from music, politics and pop culture that feature “chaotic moments.”
“Wicked” won’t be the last modern retelling of “The Wizard of Oz”. Prime Video is developing “Dorothy”, a contemporary retelling of the story in series form, from creator Gina Matthews and producers Gwen Stefani and her husband, Blake Shelton. Stefani and Shelton share the title of “non-writing executive producers.” Deadline describes Dorothy as “a contemporary, music-infused retelling of The Wizard of Oz based on L. Frank Baum’s books, using the Yellow Brick Road as a metaphor for the challenges and choices facing young adults today.”

Your nails grow faster in hot summer. This is probably due to increased blood supply to the fingertips. It could also be because you’re less stressed while on holiday so less likely to gnaw away at ‘em.

With vinyl records coming back into vogue, and artists offering “special vinyl editions” of their work, you’ve got to wonder: How long does a vinyl record last? Claims vary wildly, from just a handful of plays to thousands, without damage. To settle the debate, YouTuber VWestlife ran a 2-month experiment using identical records on 3 turntables: a budget Quasar with a ceramic cartridge, an entry-level Audio-Technica, and a mid-range Technics. Each record was played 50 times under controlled conditions, while one copy was left untouched as a control. Afterward, sound tests revealed virtually no difference between the played and unplayed records. Even the budget player didn’t cause audible wear. The verdict: with proper care and handling, records can survive hundreds of plays, far outlasting the myths.
When Taylor Swift drops her new album “Life of a Showgirl in October”, fans can enjoy it on streaming, on vinyl – and on cassette tape. Although they were believed to have been made obsolete by CDs, cassettes are seeing a quiet revival, with 436,400 sold in the US, in 2023, up from just 80,720 in 2015. Fans, especially Gen Z “super fans,” appreciate the experience of flipping through tapes, seeing the artwork, and listening through an entire album. Retailers say they are seeing both nostalgic adults and younger listeners seeking a break from digital streaming and buying cassettes. While they’ll never replace streaming, cassettes offer a deeper, more connected way to experience music, turning an old format into a modern collectible.

WEIRD NEWS
Imagine paying to go to work — and not even for a real job. That’s exactly what some young, unemployed adults in China are doing. With youth unemployment stuck above 14% and the economy sluggish, “pretend offices” are popping up where people PAY to act like they have jobs, rather than be stuck at home. One 30-year-old tried running a food business last year, but it failed. Now, for $4.20 a day, he heads to a mock office north of Hong Kong, where he “works” (in quotations) alongside 5 others. He says he’s happy, because it feels as though they are “working together as a group.”
