SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

A new Cornell University study finds that close, lasting friendships don’t just make us happier — they may actually help us live longer. Researchers examined how “cumulative social advantage,” or the depth and consistency of our relationships over a lifetime, can slow biological aging. Support from parents, friends, and communities all add up, shaping the body’s epigenetic (genetic system regulator), inflammatory, and hormonal systems in measurable ways. Those with richer social networks showed lower inflammation and healthier brain aging. Lead author Anthony Ong compares friendships to a retirement fund: the earlier and more consistently you invest in relationships, the greater your returns – both emotionally and biologically – as you age.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

“Kpop Demon Hunters” has left fans craving more, but there’s one wish that won’t get granted. Maggie Kang, creator and co-director of the Netflix animated musical film, said that those hoping for a live-action version won’t be seeing it any time soon. Kang explained that because “so many elements of the tone and the comedy” are suited for animation, “It’s really hard to imagine these characters in a live-action world.” Kang said that “totally…wouldn’t work” for her. KPop Demon Hunters follows an all-girl singing group that also hunts soul-eating demons, in a bid to protect their fans. One of their biggest rivals is a boy band that are actually demons in disguise.

Netflix is bringing “KPop Demon Hunters” — an animated fantasy adventure about a fictional K-pop girl group who protect the world from demons with their music — back to the big screen for Halloween-themed sing-along screenings. The streamer wrote that “costumes are encouraged” for the event, running from Oct. 31 through Nov. 2 at all 3 major US theatrical chains: AMC, Regal and Cinemark, and in select theaters. That’s significant because the nation’s top cinemas are usually reluctant to program films from the theatrical-averse Netflix.

A Bela Lugosi biopic is in development from Leonardo DiCaprio. The Hungarian actor is best known for being the first actor to bring the iconic character of ‘Count Dracula’ to life, in the classic 1931 monster movie “Dracula”. The upcoming film will follow Lugosi through his rapid ascent to fame as one of cinema’s most iconic figures. It’ll trace his journey from Hungary to achieving stardom through his portrayal of Dracula on Broadway and in Hollywood, and his dramatic decline after turning down the role of ‘Frankenstein’, which eventually made his future rival, Boris Karloff, a star.

DID YA KNOW!?

We all have a social battery! According to Hinge’s new Social Energy Study, even with your favorite people, there’s a limit to how long you can socialize before craving alone time. 38% of over 10,000 participants said they hit social fatigue – that involves feeling drained or overstimulated – after just 2 or 3 hours. The researchers found that socializing, especially with somebody new, is more taxing for introverts. And, of course, everyone’s “social sweet spot” varies, depending on who you’re with, what you’re doing, and how much small talk is involved.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Picasso Work Goes Missing in Transport Between Madrid and Granada. A work on paper by Pablo Picasso left Madrid two weeks ago and has not been accounted for between there and its intended destination in Granada. “The work, half a page in size, apparently left the headquarters of the company that transported it from Pinto (Madrid) along with 56 other pieces,” reads the report by Javier Arroyo. “They all arrived and are now on display in the exhibition ‘Still Life. The Eternity of the Inert’ at the CajaGranada Cultural Center. All traces of the Picasso piece seem to have evaporated during a most peculiar journey.” Stiff Life with Guitar, from 1919, belongs to an unnamed private collector and is said to have been insured for €600,000 (around $700,000). According to police investigating the presumed theft, the vehicle transporting the work along with 56 other pieces traveling to the same exhibition stopped overnight—a curious move, given the drive-time between Madrid and Granada is only about four hours and the overnight stop was less than 20 miles away from the final destination. https://www.artnews.com/art-news/news/picasso

WEIRD NEWS

After a long day guarding the house or chasing birds, pets in New Zealand can now unwind with a glass of “wine.” Auckland-based Muttley’s Estate sells cat- and dog-friendly drinks with names like “Pawt”, “Champawgne”, “Purrno Noir”, and “Sauvignon Bark”. Made without grapes or alcohol, the catnip-infused blends are marketed as mood-boosting treats for furry companions. Founder John Roberts, whose family runs a veterinary pharmaceutical company, created the range after noticing pets’ stress during fireworks and travel. Since launching, the “pet wine” has become popular in New Zealand and Australia, with expansion plans for Asia and North America — although customs officers sometimes mistake it for the real thing.

THE LIST

Here’s a look some unexpected products that have undergone high-protein makeovers:

Pop-Tarts: Breakfast nostalgia gets a protein twist. The new versions of brown sugar cinnamon, strawberry, and blueberry Pop-Tarts double the protein by adding wheat and milk protein concentrates.

Doritos: PepsiCo plans “protein-packed” Doritos, proving that even your favorite nacho chips can hit the gym. It’s still not quite health food — even if the macros say so.

Starbucks Cold Foams: Your morning latte just bulked up. Starbucks’ new protein cold foams and lattes contain up to 36 grams of protein per grande. Coffee meets post-workout shake.

Peanut Butter: Skippy’s already protein-rich spread now has a “plant protein” version, boosting each serving from 7 grams to 10 grams. Because apparently, peanut butter wasn’t buff enough.

Khloud Popcorn: Khloé Kardashian’s popcorn promises 7 grams of protein per serving…a big jump from standard popcorn’s 1 or 2 grams. Snack and flex at the same time.

Protein Water: Hydration with gains. Isopure Protein Water packs 15 grams per bottle, and PepsiCo’s new Propel Protein Water ups it to 20 grams. Because even your water needs muscles.

Candy: From gummies to chocolate, sweets are joining the protein craze. A little sugar, a little whey…and a lot of marketing magic.

Cereal: Special K, Kashi, and Wheaties are adding protein to their lineups, turning breakfast into a mini workout in a bowl.

Mac and Cheese: Comfort food goes strong. Muscle Mac and Goodles serve up around 40 grams per box – carbs and curls in one bite.
