SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
If there is ONE small thing you could do that will lift your mood, lower stress, and boost morale — even while running errands, would you do it? A new study suggests the answer might be as simple as buying yourself fresh flowers. During the pandemic, demand for cut flowers soared as people sought to brighten their homes, and the trend hasn’t ‘wilted’ since. Researchers at the University of Georgia set out to learn why. They conducted a survey of more than 8,500 recent flower buyers, and found there to be clear emotional benefits to this small, colorful indulgence. People consistently reported the positive effects of flowers, overwhelmingly saying that “cut flowers make them feel better, both for at home or at work.” At home, it’s about creating a peaceful, beautiful space that lifts your spirits. At work, flowers were seen as a mood booster, helping reduce stress, brighten the atmosphere, and make people feel more energized. Even among those who do not buy flowers, it was largely agreed that flowers make them feel happier, calmer, and more relaxed.

Hilaria Baldwin says bullies are to blame for her sudden exit from “Dancing With the Stars”. Last week, she and her pro partner Gleb Savchenko became the 4th pair eliminated from season 34 of DWTS. Baldwin claims she was bullied off the show thanks to a deluge of internet hate and a coordinated campaign to get her voted off. She’s no stranger to fending off internet hate. The entrepreneur and yoga instructor has previously spoken out about facing criticism over the authenticity of her Spanish accent (she was raised bilingual).
“Baby Driver” star Ansel Elgort will make his professional dance debut in Pete Townshend’s “Quadrophenia, A Rock Ballet” at New York City Center next month. Elgort began training as a dancer at the age of 9 and studied for 5 years at the School for American Ballet. In 2012, he made his New York stage debut in the off-Broadway play “Regrets”. Townshend wrote Quadrophenia in 1973. Recorded by The Who, it became a multi-million selling album, and in 1979 inspired the feature film of the same name.
The horror sequel “Black Phone 2” dialed into an estimated $24.4 million opening, good enough for #1 over the weekend. The film, which sees Ethan Hawke return as a serial killer known as ‘The Grabber’, also saw a boost from nabbing some premium large format auditoriums — which carry higher ticket prices — from “Tron: Ares”, which took in about $11 million. Meanwhile, Aziz Ansari’s comedy “Good Fortune” didn’t see much luck, debuting in third place with an estimated $6 million, as a sleepy October box office trudges towards the end of the month.

A U.S. company has launched “Superwood,” a new material up to 10 times stronger than steel by weight…and 6 times lighter. InventWood, co-founded by materials scientist Liangbing Hu, chemically treats and compresses natural wood to enhance its cellulose structure, making it denser, tougher, and more fire- and dent-resistant. Superwood, produced in Maryland, could lead to lighter, faster, and more sustainable construction, replacing metals in buildings and furniture. It looks and behaves like wood – but is far stronger.

OF THE DAY
Halloween candy has been disappearing from store shelves for weeks now – and while it’s a sweet tradition, it’s not great for your health. This year, kids will consume roughly 7,000 calories in candy at Halloween. For perspective, that’s the same as 13 Big Macs. Stats show that the average person will eat about 3.4 pounds (1.54kg) of the stuff over the Halloween season. Experts warn that overdoing it on sugar can raise the risk of diabetes and other chronic conditions. So, keep in mind that some candies are healthier choices than others. Peanut M&Ms offer protein and good fats, Reese’s peanut butter cups provide a bit of protein, Smarties (the US candy, not the Canadian and UK chocolatey version) are low-calorie, Tootsie Pops last longer, and Twizzlers are low-fat (but still quite sugary). Here are some additional factoids as we get set for the kids coming home on Oct. 31 with a big bag of calories…
• Peanut M&Ms: 3g protein per 12 pieces, also contain fiber
• Smarties: 25 calories per roll
• Tootsie Pop: 11g sugar, 60 calories
• Twizzlers: 110 calories, 13g sugar (3 pieces)
• Nerds: Mini boxes have the same amount of sugar and even fewer calories than Tootsie Pops. Not good for the teeth, though…

WEIRD NEWS
Grubhub is turning “you snooze, you lose” into “you snooze, you score.” Now through Nov. 1, the company is offering college students “Snooze Insurance”. That’s a $15 “do-over” credit they can take advantage of if they fall asleep (or [ahem!] pass out) before their late-night food arrives. According to Grubhub, 72% of students have snoozed through a delivery after studying, partying, or binging shows. To claim the perk, Grubhub+ Student members can text “DELIVERY” to 1-844-954-OOPS every Saturday at 1pm ET…and the $15 will be ready to use in their app. Codes are limited, so don’t sleep on it — especially with Halloweekend on the horizon. Because in college, sometimes the couch wins. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/2n83xaz6

A new survey from Alan’s Factory Outlet reveals that brown, red, and black cars are the most likely to get splattered by birds, while lighter shades like white and silver stay cleaner. It was found that nearly a quarter of U.S. drivers spend over $500 a year battling bird droppings through washes or paint repairs, with Tesla and BMW owners hit hardest financially. Scientists say darker colors and reflective surfaces may draw birds in, and parking under trees or power lines only worsens the risk. Interestingly, about 29% of drivers believe birds personally target them. Experts remind you that covered parking or car covers can help prevent costly cleanups. Here are the top 10 most-targeted car brands, in order:
1. Ram
2. Jeep
3. Chevrolet
4. Nissan
5. Dodge
6. Tesla
7. BMW
8. Lexus
9. Ford
10. Toyota
