THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John,

Growing up poor, we never gave out candy at Halloween. We would go out to the wealthy neighborhoods and get the best candy. I remember how much I loved those people for giving out the good candy and how impressed I was with these “rich people” each year. Now I'm an adult and I have a great job and I want to give out full candy bars for Halloween. My wife thinks this is a ridiculous flex. She does not understand at all. She grew up pretty well off, so she has no idea what this is like for me. She already bought a Halloween candy mix bag and told me that it would be fine. I have already priced it for my plan and it's not as expensive as she thinks. It's the equivalent of less than one afternoon's pay at my job. I think it's worth it to give our neighborhood kids something good. I think it will also give our kids a little boost. I would have loved it when I was a kid. We didn't even give out candy. I'd have kids harass me about that each year. I want our kids to walk tall knowing they are part of something awesome. I'm buying the full size candy bars. How do I make this right with my wife when I already know she's not on-board? I just have to do this one! I need your help!

SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Nearly a third of adults are still afraid of the dark, says new research. In a survey of 2,000 people, 29% admitted it, with men slightly more likely than women to get the jitters when the lights go out (33% vs. 26%). A quarter sleep with a nightlight, while 10% keep the lights on – and that’s twice as common among men. Just in time for Halloween, it was found that horror movies make things worse: 28% say they “love” them, yet many say that watching scary movies results in nightmares, restless sleep, and waking during the night. Men are more likely to enjoy horror films…and to have nightmares, while women tend to feel more scared during and after watching. More findings from the survey of adults in the US…

11% still sleep with a stuffed animal or comfort item

28% wake up during the night after horror movies

22% report lower-quality sleep

12% sleep fewer hours

21% of women said they “hate” horror movies, compared to 7% of men

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

When Valerie Bertinelli joined “The Drew Barrymore Show” as a lifestyle expert last year, the supportive atmosphere encouraged her to share…and inspired her upcoming memoir “Getting Naked”. On the show, Bertinelli explained to Barrymore: “You welcomed me into this home and it felt like such a safe space. I feel so loved here. And this book is hopefully what I’ve been through, what I can learn from it, and then what I can then give anybody else…to learn and make their lives better as well.” The book addresses Bertinelli’s “insecurities that have haunted her for decades,” including body image issues and a persistent need to be perfect. Getting Naked hits shelves on March 10.

The rumors of the runtimes for Season 5 of “Stranger Things” have been greatly exaggerated. Ross Duffer, who co-created the Netflix juggernaut with his brother Matt, revealed in an IG post the length of the first 4 episodes for the final season. The Season 5 premiere, “The Crawl,” will run for 1 hour and 8 minutes; Episode 2, “The Vanishing,” will run 54 minutes; Episode 3, “The Turnbow Trap,” will run 1 hour and 6 minutes; and Episode 4, “Sorcerer,” will run 1 hour and 23 minutes. The post refutes social media posts that have claimed every episode of Season 5 would run at least 90 minutes, as well as a Puck News report that the episodes “run from 90 minutes to 2 hours long.” LINK: https://tinyurl.com/57ett834

Emma Stone’s new film “Bugonia” is set to pull off a hair-raising publicity stunt. Attendees for an upcoming screening have been asked to shave their heads in order to get in. An events website posted about a free, special advanced screening for Bugonia at the Culver Theater tonight, with the catch: “This special screening is for anyone who is bald. If you are not bald, we will have a barber on site to shave your head in order for you to watch the film.” Stone’s character finds herself bald in the movie after she’s kidnapped by 2 conspiracy-obsessed men. DID YA KNOW!?

Online retailer Shein’s first physical store is sparking France’s biggest fashion uproar in years. The Chinese fast-fashion giant plans to open a boutique inside the historic BHV Marais department store in Paris next month, drawing backlash from local designers, unions, the mayor, and over 100,000 petitioners. Critics accuse Shein of undercutting French brands, harming the environment, and exploiting labor. Several labels are pulling their products in protest, and a state-owned bank has withdrawn financing for BHV’s owner over the controversial partnership.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Police in Ohio had an unusual early-morning chase: a giant inflatable pumpkin rolling through town. The Parma Heights Police Department shared bodycam footage of officers pursuing the runaway pumpkin after it broke free from a local home. At one point, an officer and a member of the public managed to hold it at the side of the road while the officer explained, “I was pretty much in pursuit.” Ultimately, police stuffed the pumpkin into a patrol car and returned it to its owner’s yard. In a social media post, the cops joked: “Officers can confirm that Cinderella’s carriage did, in fact, turn back into a pumpkin just after midnight.”

A South Carolina couple has taken Halloween decorating to a terrifyingly realistic level. Amanda Peden and Sam Lee’s front-yard display makes their house look like it’s on fire, complete with smoke machines, clever lighting, and special effects so convincing that passersby keep calling the fire department. In previous years, their Halloween display featured a crashed plane with skeleton passengers, and a flipped van with a trapped skeleton…but the burning house has set a new standard. Firefighters stay in touch with the family to ensure safety, and every time a fire is reported at the house, first responders are sent — just in case there’s a real fire. By Oct. 6, there had already been 4 emergency calls.

WEIRD NEWS

Debbie McNutt often joked that she would only share her recipe for tea biscuits over her dead body. So, when this elementary school teacher, wife and mother from Nova Scotia, died in 2019 from breast cancer, her good-humored family had it engraved on her gravestone. “We laugh about that to this day, because she kept saying that to people,” says her daughter, Jennifer McNutt. “It was actually my dad’s idea.” Debbie’s gravestone recipe is in good company. Rosie Grant, the creator of a new book, has found 50 recipes at gravesites around the world, to date. She shares these recipes—from chicken soup to snickerdoodles—and the stories behind them in her debut book, To Die For: A Cookbook of Gravestone Recipes. AVAILABLE NOW: https://amzn.to/48GlfAV
