SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Do you have “special occasion” items…like dishes, glassware, or fancy silverware…in your home – that never seem to get used? A new survey found most of us are saving “special occasion” items for a moment that never seems to arrive. The study of 2,000 US homeowners found the average person waits nearly 30 years before finally using treasured items like fine dishes and glassware. Two-thirds (68%) wish they could treat every day like a special occasion, and 58% say they’d use these items daily if it were practical. Still, the fear of damage (48%) and impracticality (45%) keep many from doing so. Respondents said they are saving the items for the bigger highlights in their lives… those include special occasions like holiday gatherings, anniversaries, getting married, milestone birthdays, and graduations. Over half admit they’ve never used their fancy possessions, though 83% plan to pass them down someday — turning today’s unused teacups, vases and candy dishes into tomorrow’s family heirlooms.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Alec Baldwin posted a video on Instagram Monday, saying he crashed his wife Hilaria’s white Range Rover into a “big fat tree” while driving his brother Stephen on Long island NY. In the clip, he said he swerved to avoid a “garbage truck the size of a whale” after he and Stephen attended the Hamptons Film Festival. He said the vehicle is “pretty smashed up”, and he feels “bad about that”. Alec also said that he’s fine, and so is his brother. He thanked well-wishers for their support in a message alongside the video. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/37cn4n79

Netflix’s “Monster: The Ed Gein Story” has put Plainfield, Wisconsin on the map … but not how the town hoped. The latest season of “Monster” follows the life of Gein — nicknamed “The Butcher of Plainfield” — and the crimes he committed around his hometown. The small town’s Clerk Treasurer, Emily Schaut, told TMZ: “Plainfield has dark moments in its history. We acknowledge this, and we have worked diligently to become more than a single story.” Gein confessed to killing 2 women in the 1950s, and also exhumed corpses from local graveyards, creating keepsakes from their bones and skin. Schaut has a warning for anyone visiting Plainfield to see landmarks from the grisly incidents: “Please respect the private property laws associated with the Ed Gein case, as trespassing (laws are) enforced.”

DID YA KNOW!?

‘Sea level’ isn’t actually level. As the strength of the force generated by the Earth’s spin is strongest at the equator, the average sea level bulges outward there, putting it further from the centre of the Earth than at the poles. Differences in the strength of the Earth’s gravity at different points also cause variation.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

You know how it goes: The scene of the TV show you’re watching ends with a quiet, sensitive scene, and then a commercial starts up with a marching and, group of crying babies, and probably a truck pull! Well, not in California, where they’ve officially lowered the BOOM on blaring TV ads. A new law requires commercials to match the volume of the program they interrupt, putting an end to the jarring jumps from quiet shows to screaming pitches. Viewers have long complained about being startled during peaceful documentaries by shouting salesmen hawking everything from snacks to digestive remedies. The law updates outdated rules that only applied to broadcast and cable, now covering streaming services too, ensuring that binge-watching your favorite show no longer comes with unwanted decibels during breaks.

If you’ve ever wanted to twin with your furry workout buddy, Adidas has the answer – in 4 colors, no less. The brand’s fall/winter Originals Pet Collection, just launched in China, lets cats and dogs strut the streets in black, blue, green, or pink mini-tracksuits. Following the runaway success of its first pet drop, Adidas is doubling down on fashion for the 4-legged. This season even adds XS to 2XL sizes, so whether your companion is a dainty diva or a full-on floof, there’s finally an iconic 3-stripe fit for every tail and temperament.

WEIRD NEWS

University of Calgary scientists want your toenail clippings. Dr. Aaron Goodarzi, a professor at the Cumming School of Medicine, leads an interdisciplinary research team studying environmental causes of lung cancer. He says their work suggests toenails can be used to help estimate a person’s long-term exposure to radon — a colorless, odourless gas that is the second-leading cause of lung cancer, after smoking. Toenails are “one of our body’s archives of past exposure”, and because toenails grow at about half the speed of fingernails, they give “a better readout of your longer-term exposure”, to environmental toxins. Volunteers interested in having their toenail clippings examined will receive a radon test kit, and will be asked to collect 4 months’ worth of toenail clippings.
