SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

A new analysis suggests that despite the fact that we can have thousands of co-called “friends” online…in addition to all your “in-person” friends and acquaintances, the brain is wired to top out at about 150 meaningful relationships. That’s a limit known as “Dunbar’s Number”, first proposed by anthropologist Robin Dunbar in the 1990s. The brain’s neocortex evolved to handle the complexities of social life, including empathy and cooperation, but apparently, it but also sets natural limits on genuine social bonds. Beyond roughly 150, relationships grow superficial, no matter how connected to others we may seem online. Scientists say understanding these biological boundaries is crucial as modern isolation rises and community ties weaken. Rebuilding smaller, trust-based groups could strengthen well-being, cooperation, and even global sustainability efforts.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

The surviving Yellowjackets will have one more season to make it home. The Paramount+ thriller will end with its upcoming 4th season. “Yellowjackets” premiered on Showtime in 2021 and became a word-of-mouth hit as it told the often-wild tale of a high school girls’ soccer team surviving the Canadian wilderness after a plane crash in the 1990s, and the present-day stories of those who made it out and tried to put their lives back together. The series has scored 10 Emmy nominations so far, including 2 best drama series nods for seasons 1 and 2.

Netflix announced that season 4 of “Bridgerton”, which sees ‘Benedict’ at the center of the story, will premiere in 2 parts, beginning January 29, followed by a second drop on February 26. Along with the announcement, the streamer released another new teaser for the upcoming season, giving fans a glimpse at the romance to come between Benedict and the mysterious Sophie Baek. SCOOP OF THE DAY

A Reddit user definitely had “reservations” about where he chose to eat, when the restaurant he was at tacked a “Quiet Time Surcharge” onto his restaurant bill — a 20% pre-tip fee for dining when the place was nearly empty. Curious, he asked the server about it, who sheepishly explained that management viewed it as “like flying private instead of commercial.” The diner laughed, but protested, saying, “I’m not chartering a restaurant, I just wanted dinner.” Commenters agreed it was absurd, noting that unadvertised charges are usually illegal. Typically, restaurants offer discounts to attract customers during slow hours, and don’t penalize them. The post sparked outrage, joining a growing list of bizarre dining fees worldwide, from ice surcharges to “living wage” add-ons.

WEIRD NEWS

A 33-year-old UK truck driver, Nathan Rimington, ended up in intensive care after consuming 3kg (6.6 pounds) of Haribo Cola gummies in just 3 days. The 10,000+ calorie binge left him with severe abdominal pain, sweating, and high blood pressure. Doctors first suspected food poisoning — but later found abnormally high gelatin levels and diagnosed him with acute diverticulitis. That’s an inflammation of the colon that can cause infection, fever, and intense pain. Rimington was hospitalized for 6 days and treated with IV fluids. He’s since recovered, but says he won’t be touching another gummy candy anytime soon.
