SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Being slightly overweight might not shorten your life, but being very thin could. A massive Danish study of more than 85,000 adults found that test participants with a BMI below 18.5 faced nearly triple the risk of early death, while even those at the lower “healthy” end (18.5–22.4) had elevated risks. By contrast, people in the “overweight” or moderately “obese” range (25–35) showed no significant increase in mortality. Researchers argue BMI is outdated and too blunt a tool, suggesting the safest range may actually lie between 22.5 and 30. Thinness, not moderate fatness, posed the bigger danger.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

ABC has unveiled its holiday programming schedule, which includes a new “Dancing With The Stars” special, as well as Kevin Costner‘s “The First Christmas”, a “CMA Country Christmas” special from Nashville, and the ever-popular “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest”, among many others. You’ll see holiday favorite films “The Sound Of Music”, “The Santa Clause” and “Home Alone”, which, since its debut on ABC holiday programming in 2022, has been highest-rated movie on any network among Adults 18-49 across the entire year — and was last year’s most co-viewed movie of the holiday season on broadcast television.

Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reuniting to dust off their blockbuster “Mummy” movies. The former costars are set to reprise their roles in another installment of the Universal Pictures monster franchise. Fraser and Weisz first starred as ‘Rick’ and ‘Evelyn O’Connell’ in 1999’s “The Mummy”. Then they starred in “The Mummy Returns” in 2001. For a 2008 sequel, “Tomb of the Dragon Emperor”, Fraser returned, though Evelyn was recast with Maria Bello. Tom Cruise led a reboot in 2017, though it ultimately didn’t connect at the box office.

Fox is searching for the country’s dumbest people for its latest unscripted effort. The network is developing a US adaptation of “Nation’s Dumbest”, a Scandinavian program that must be the first TV show where the loser is the winner. Celebrities fight it out to be eliminated from the competition as quickly as possible — to avoid being crowned the nation’s dumbest. From influencers to wrestlers, comedians to politicians, the contestants are put to the test in a series of physical and mental rounds about all the things they really should know.

DID YA KNOW!?

Did You Know... For years we’ve heard that breakfast is “the most important meal of the day”, but research shows skipping it doesn’t negatively affect your thinking. An analysis of 63 studies found virtually no difference in memory, attention, or problem-solving between people who ate breakfast and those who didn’t. The brain easily switches from glucose to another energy source, ketones, when hungry, keeping performance steady. Adults handle short fasts just fine; kids still benefit from morning food. The research found that hunger only distracts you…when you’re thinking about food.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

An Italian cruise ship in the Mediterranean was stranded over the weekend with no electricity, no hot water, and no air conditioning for hours.

The first three of 30 original Bob Ross paintings were sold at an auction yesterday in Los Angeles, with additional sales planned in London, New York, and Boston. Auction earnings will be given to US public television stations, which saw $1.1B in federal funding cuts this year over concerns of bias and obsolescence. The pieces sold yesterday are "Cliffside" ($115K, painted in 1990); "Home in the Valley" ($229K, painted in 1993); and "Winter’s Peace" ($318K, painted in 1993). Ross' landscapes are rarely seen on the open market—he painted them under a work-for-hire deal, giving Bob Ross Inc. ownership of nearly all of them (w/video). Ross was known for his calm demeanor and catchphrases like "happy little trees." He hosted 403 episodes of "The Joy of Painting" from 1983 to 1994, following a 20-year US Air Force career. He died from lymphoma in 1995 at age 52. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/3-bob-ross-paintings-auctioned-funding-cuts-rcna243192

FUN FACT FOR YOU:

✓ Instead of “happily ever after”, some old German fairy tales end with: “If they haven’t died, then they are still living today”.

✓ Ancient Egyptians put dead mice in their mouth to ease toothaches.

✓ Paddington Bear has 2 birthdays (just like the Queen did). Paddington celebrates his birthdays on June 25th and December 25th.

All of the sweaters ‘Mister Rogers’ wore on his show were hand-knitted by his mother.

WEIRD NEWS

Kraft has come up with its most unhinged Mac and Cheese Flavor yet. Taking comfort food to a new level, it has just released…Apple Pie Mac & Cheese! Just in time for the holidays, the limited-edition flavor combines Kraft’s creamy macaroni with warm apple pie spices for a sweet-and-savory twist on 2 American classics. The blend of cheese and apple might sound odd, but the pairing supposedly has culinary roots in apple-cheddar pies and fondue boards. Following hits like ‘Everything Bagel’ and ‘Pizza’ Mac & Cheese, this bold new mashup is now available in the US – while supplies last. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/4t388cmp
