SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

The same drugs that are shrinking waistlines might also be sobering us up. A new study finds that GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, popular for weight loss and diabetes, might also dull alcohol’s effects. Researchers at Virginia Tech found that participants taking GLP-1s reported feeling less intoxicated and had slower rises in blood alcohol levels, suggesting the drugs may slow alcohol’s entry into the brain. That could make drinking less rewarding, and reduce cravings. Scientists say this could pave the way for new treatments for alcohol addiction. Early evidence also hints GLP-1s may curb other addictive behaviors like smoking and opioid use, offering hope for recovery tools.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

After several years in development, Warner Bros. Pictures Animation and New Line Cinema are finally moving ahead with the “Hello Kitty” feature film, set for release in July, 2028. The feature was first announced in 2019, and was the first time film rights to the classic cat had been licensed. It’s not yet known whether ‘Kitty White’ (yes, she has a last name) will speak in the film, but lacking a mouth, she has been completely silent to date in several animated series.

A newly discovered Dr. Seuss manuscript featuring the ‘Cat in the Hat’ and celebrating the United States will be published next year, just in time for America’s 250th anniversary. “Sing the 50 United States” is the first full manuscript written by Dr. Seuss (born Theodor Geisel) to be discovered since the posthumous release of “What Pet Should I Get?” in 2015. The new book aims to teach readers the names of the states. In it, the Cat in the Hat advises: “To sing the 50 United States, you have to use your brain. Massachusetts. Minnesota. Missouri and Montana. Mississippi. Maryland! Michigan and Maine!”

Fyre Festival founder Billy McFarland has been filming a new documentary as he attempts to launch PHNX, a December festival he’s billing as his big comeback. McFarland says he’s rented an island and cameras are following every move — waiting to see if it’s a redemption story or another disaster. Titled “FYRE 2,” the doc will explore one of the most infamous comeback attempts in entertainment history. McFarland has given full access to producers, who’ve obtained thousands of hours of never-before-seen footage, including secret meetings with the Mexican government, artist negotiations, and behind-the-scenes moments from years of planning the reboot.

DID YA KNOW!?

We often assume youth equals peak performance — but new research suggests otherwise…at least when it comes to mental acuity. Psychologists Gilles Gignac and Marcin Zajenkowski found that when intelligence, personality, emotional intelligence, and decision-making are measured together, overall human functioning doesn’t peak until around age 60. Physical strength and quick thinking may fade after our 20s, but emotional control, judgment, and knowledge continue to grow for decades. The study also found that people in their 50s and 60s often earn the most, make the best decisions, and handle complex problems most effectively. This suggests that midlife may actually be the brain’s golden age.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Next time someone tells you to “think before you eat,” rest assured that your brain is waaay ahead of you. Research from the University of Melbourne shows that within milliseconds, the brain evaluates a food’s taste, healthiness, and calorie content simultaneously. Using brain imaging on 110 participants, researchers found signals for healthiness appeared just 195 milliseconds after seeing food. And within 215 milliseconds, the brain recognized whether or not the food seemed appetizing. These findings challenge the idea that we’re hardwired to process immediate pleasure faster than health considerations when choosing foods.

If you think you have a gluten sensitivity, odds are, the problem is something else entirely. A new review in The Lancet suggests most people who feel unwell after eating it aren’t actually sensitive to gluten. Studies show reactions are uncommon, and symptoms often improve on low-FODMAP diets (avoiding certain fruits, vegetables, legumes and cereals), or after reducing processed foods. Psychological factors, including expectations and anxiety, also play a major role via the gut-brain axis. While true gluten sensitivity exists, for most people, going gluten-free may help simply by changing diet quality and eating habits — not by eliminating gluten itself.
