SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
A bite of dark chocolate might give your memory a short, sweet boost. Researchers at Japan’s Shibaura Institute of Technology found that flavanols – the bitter compounds in cocoa – can trigger a surge of noradrenaline in the brain’s hippocampus. That’s the region that locks short-term memories into long-term ones. In mice, this boost lasted about an hour and improved memory performance by roughly 30%. The effect kicks in quickly because it’s triggered by taste, not digestion. Though the results haven’t yet been tested in humans, the study suggests that a square of dark chocolate before studying or an important meeting could briefly sharpen focus and recall.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
Meghan Markle is returning to her acting career. She has agreed to a small cameo role in the movie “Close Personal Friends.” Lily Collins, Jack Quaid, Brie Larson and Henry Golding are starring in the comedy, which is currently shooting around Los Angeles. The story revolves around a “regular” couple that meets a celebrity couple while on a trip to Santa Barbara. When the 2 couples become friends, lines are crossed…and things get awkward. Markle starred in “Suits” for 7 seasons, and appeared in films like “Horrible Bosses” and “Remember Me” before marrying Prince Harry in 2018.
Meghan Markle is releasing a Netflix holiday special. The Duchess of Sussex announced that a special episode of her lifestyle series “With Love, Meghan” will arrive on the streaming platform December 3rd. Markle also teased a look at her festive holiday table, wearing a green dress and looking over what appears to be a dinner table with candles, glassware, ribbons, and greenery. Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone and Cole Escola are joining forces to give ‘Miss Piggy’ the movie-star treatment. A film about the temperamental diva puppet is in early development at Disney, which owns the rights to the Muppets, according to sources. Miss Piggy, created in the ’70s by Bonnie Erickson and Frank Oz, has never been the subject of a feature film. Lawrence and Stone will serve as producers, while Escola, a Tony winner for their hit Broadway play “Oh, Mary!”, is set to write the screenplay.

Did You Know... Battleship and Trivial Pursuit have been inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame, organizers at the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester NY announced Thursday. The 2 board games join slime — yes, the gooey, stretchy globs of fun — in the National Toy Hall of Fame’s class of 2025. Other toys that were nominated this year, but didn’t make the cut include Catan, Connect Four, cornhole, Furby, the scooter, snow, the Spirograph, the Star Wars lightsaber, and Tickle Me Elmo.

The U.S. Postal Service will be delivering its fiscal year 2025 results soon, and is expected to have lost close to $10 billion
So, you might have heard that Gen Z, which, having been raised online and used to constant stimulation, is now embracing boredom. On TikTok, young people share “marathons,” showing themselves doing absolutely nothing – no music, no scrolling, just sitting or walking without distractions. TikToker Ishaan Sharma says he used to multitask nonstop and blames social media for shrinking his focus. And maybe rawdogging is a good thing: Experts note that the trend mimics mindfulness, which is known to help improve attention spans, especially when paired with nature. Neuroscientists say even brief walks outdoors can boost memory and focus. Boredom can also spark creativity and introspection. Influencers say the practice feels awkward at first, but with repetition, it becomes calming – and even inspiring.

WEIRD NEWS
A German museum is proving that rudeness can be an art form. Performance artist Carl Brandi transforms into his alter ego, Joseph Langelinck, for the Kunstpalast museum’s twice-monthly “Grumpy Guide” tours. Those are 70-minute walk-throughs where he scolds, mocks, and berates guests for their supposed ignorance. Tickets, about $8 US, have sold out since launching in May, with bookings stretching into 2026. Brandi says his insults target “the group, not the person,” and that the act’s appeal lies in the “emotional ride.” Inspired by viral “rude waiter” restaurants, the museum embraced the idea as a new and creative way to attract younger audiences and more people in general, one sarcastic lecture at a time.

THE LIST
MOST COMMONLY MISPRONOUNCED INTERNATIONAL FOODS:
Based on Google searches of “how to pronounce [the name of a food]”…
1. Gyros – This Greek pita often filled with meat and veggies is tricky because the Greek letter “γ” doesn’t have an exact English equivalent. You can say either “YEE-ro” or “ZHEE-ro”, but a hard “g” is incorrect.
2. Açaí – The superfood berry found in açai bowls is pronounced “ah-sah-EE”, despite only 4 letters. Its 3-syllable structure often trips people up.
3. Pho – The Vietnamese noodle soup is pronounced “fuh”, not “foe.”
4. Worcestershire Sauce – You knew this was coming. This British sauce simplifies its long spelling; pronounce it “WUSS-tuh-shuh” rather than trying to say all 14 letters.
5. Gnocchi – These Italian potato dumplings are often mispronounced as “NOH-kee,” but the correct pronunciation is “NYOH-kee”, with a hidden “y” sound at the start.
6. Quinoa (“KEEN-wah”) – This versatile grain is often mispronounced because the spelling doesn’t match the sound.
7. Caprese (“kuh-PREY-zey”) – The Italian salad of tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil is tricky due to Italian emphasis and vowel sounds.
8. Charcuterie (“shahr-KOO-tuh-ree”) – This French term for cured meats confuses English speakers with its silent letters and French vowel sounds.
9. Macaron (“mack-uh-ROHN”) – The delicate French cookie is frequently confused with “macaroon”; the emphasis and nasal ending are key. (Also: confused with the French President!)
10. Tzatziki (“TSAT-see-kee”) – The Greek yogurt and cucumber dip trips people up with its consonant-heavy start and “kee” ending.
