SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Financial stress is shaping how young adults present themselves online. A new TD Bank survey found that 53% of Gen Z Canadians feel pressured to appear financially secure on social media, even when they’re struggling, and 65% believe they’re falling behind their peers. Rising costs and stagnant incomes top their list of worries – nearly half cite the cost of living as their biggest barrier to financial goals (Duh!). Many also admit to feeling lost about money management. Despite that pressure, Gen Z is redefining success: Most report that they are favoring lifestyle, freedom, and experiences over traditional milestones, and just 19% say they are aiming for home ownership. Half said they prefer to splurge on experiences like travel and dining out rather than save for the future. But TD says even small savings steps can make a difference – and help today’s youth to balance image with reality.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Helen Mirren will be the 2026 recipient of the Golden Globes Cecil B. DeMille Award, joining the likes of Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Oprah Winfrey. Mirren will be honored during a Golden Eve primetime special, which airs Jan. 8 and will stream on Paramount+. The award acknowledges the recipient’s career and its impact. A press release said: “Helen Mirren is a force of nature…Her transcendent performances and commitment to her craft continue to inspire generations of artists and audiences alike.”

Kim Kardashian failed her bar exam. She took to Instagram Saturday to reveal she didn’t pass the State Bar of California, writing: “Well… I’m not a lawyer yet. I just play a very well-dressed one on TV.” She went on to say: “Six years into this law journey, and I’m still all in until I pass the bar. No shortcuts, no giving up, just more studying and even more determination.” Kardashian thanked “everyone who has supported and encouraged” her, and said: “Falling short isn’t a failure — It’s fuel…Let’s Go!!!!!”

Dan Trachtenberg is the hero of the hour…as his new movie “Predator: Badlands” has ended the drought at the domestic box office. The movie opened to a record domestic debut for the 38-year-old Predator franchise, netting over $39 million over the weekend. Another surprise is performance of “Regretting You”. In its third weekend, it is making headlines for its staying power, coming in second with $7.3 million, despite the release of a number of new films. “Black Phone 2” held steady at #3 with an estimated $5.2 million in its fourth weekend.

Martha Stewart is facing backlash online after a video from her New York City book signing went viral…for the wrong reasons. A woman shared a clip showing her sister approaching Stewart’s signing table. Stewart can be seen speaking to someone off-camera as the fan nervously waits for her to finish. Without breaking her conversation, Stewart signs the fan’s book, never making eye contact until she slides it back across the table with a brief nod, before moving on to the next guest. “The woman wrote: “Not my sister waiting 2 hours for Martha Stewart to sign her book and she low-key ignores her lol.” The vid quickly spread across social media, triggering a wave of criticism, blasting Stewart for what was called disrespectful behavior toward a loyal supporter. DID YA KNOW!?

Did You Know... Astronauts on future missions to the Moon and Mars could subsist on a brand new “space food” that is concocted from thin air… and astronauts’ urine. The European Space Agency is looking into Solein, a new invention from Finnish startup Solar Foods. It is a protein-rich powder made from microbes, air, electricity — and urea from urine, which provides essential nitrogen. ESA hopes to test the process aboard the ISS, confirming whether Solein can grow in microgravity. If successful, the so-called “pee powder” could support long-duration missions and offer a sustainable food supply for future space explorers.

JOKE OF THE DAY

SCOOP OF THE DAY

The world’s tallest active hockey player is head and shoulders above the competition…literally. 17-year-old defenceman Alexander Karmanov stands 7 feet tall (2.13m) …without skates, and is already impressing his teammates on the Jr. B Brantford Titans of the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League…while adjusting to custom gear built for his size. He uses hockey sticks with an extension built in, and had 6 inches added to the torso and sleeves of his jerseys. The tallest active player in the NHL is Matt Rempe of the New York Rangers, who stands a comparatively puny 6 feet 9 inches.

Australia has a new eerie creature to add to its scary wildlife roster: a newly discovered “lucifer” bee — named that thanks to its tiny devil-like horns. Named ‘Megachile (Hackeriapis) lucifer’, the species was identified in Western Australia by Curtin University researcher Kit Prendergast, who first spotted it in 2019 while surveying an endangered wildflower. A fan of the Netflix show “Lucifer”, she was immediately struck by the bee’s distinct appearance, especially the small facial horns that inspired its infernal name. It’s the first new member of this bee group in more than 2 decades, highlighting how much biodiversity remains unknown. Prendergast hopes the horned bee’s discovery draws attention to overlooked native species — many of which may play crucial roles in fragile ecosystems threatened by habitat loss and climate change.

THE LIST

MOST COMMONLY MISPRONOUNCED INTERNATIONAL FOODS:

Based on Google searches of “how to pronounce [the name of a food]”…

1. Gyros – This Greek pita often filled with meat and veggies is tricky because the Greek letter “γ” doesn’t have an exact English equivalent. You can say either “YEE-ro” or “ZHEE-ro”, but a hard “g” is incorrect.

2. Açaí – The superfood berry found in açai bowls is pronounced “ah-sah-EE”, despite only 4 letters. Its 3-syllable structure often trips people up.

3. Pho – The Vietnamese noodle soup is pronounced “fuh”, not “foe.”

4. Worcestershire Sauce – You knew this was coming. This British sauce simplifies its long spelling; pronounce it “WUSS-tuh-shuh” rather than trying to say all 14 letters.

5. Gnocchi – These Italian potato dumplings are often mispronounced as “NOH-kee,” but the correct pronunciation is “NYOH-kee”, with a hidden “y” sound at the start.

6. Quinoa (“KEEN-wah”) – This versatile grain is often mispronounced because the spelling doesn’t match the sound.

7. Caprese (“kuh-PREY-zey”) – The Italian salad of tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil is tricky due to Italian emphasis and vowel sounds.

8. Charcuterie (“shahr-KOO-tuh-ree”) – This French term for cured meats confuses English speakers with its silent letters and French vowel sounds.

9. Macaron (“mack-uh-ROHN”) – The delicate French cookie is frequently confused with “macaroon”; the emphasis and nasal ending are key.

10. Tzatziki (“TSAT-see-kee”) – The Greek yogurt and cucumber dip trips people up with its consonant-heavy start and “kee” ending.
