SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Every parent knows that kids ask a lot of questions. And a new survey of 2,000 people with children ages 0-6 shows that kids today have some truly unique curiosities. Those include queries about catching bugs and building houses for them, and asking about door stoppers, elevator buttons, worms, and even “extinct fish.” The survey, taken in the US, found that parents face an average of 46 questions a day (per kid), and they’re stumped about 35% of the time by gems like: “If time had a smell, what would it smell like?” and “Where do dreams go when we wake up?” But parents agree that nurturing curiosity is vital to a child’s development. Some additional findings from the survey:

Parents say “be careful” 27 times a day, on average, and “don’t touch that” 25 times.

97% describe their child as curious; 71% as very curious.

38% lose sleep over how they handled a situation or question.

Only 22% of parents now use the phrase “because I said so”.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Taylor Momsen and Jim Carrey’s bond extends far beyond Whoville. Upon reuniting with her “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” costar for the first time in 25 years at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Momsen told People of some of her favorite memories of working with the comedian. Momsen Quote: “I just love that he was very protective of me. He was always very kind. And just the entire experience of filming Grinch and getting to know him so well, even in all the makeup, was just wonderful.” Carrey portrayed the Christmas-hating ‘Grinch’ in the 2000 holiday film, while Momsen was just 5-years-old when she stepped into the shoes of little ‘Cindy-Lou Who’.

Ryan Reynolds is working with Amazon MGM to develop and star in a remake of “Thunderbolt & Lightfoot”, a 1974 action comedy that starred Clint Eastwood and Jeff Bridges. Eastwood played a bank robber disguised as a preacher who is on the run from his old gang, who erroneously believe he double-crossed them. When he meets up with Lightfoot, a low-level street thief played by Bridges, they come up with a plan to team with the old gang for a new bank job – but nothing goes as planned. Some have suggested the new project offers the possibility for a reteaming of Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, something for which some fans have been clamoring.

“Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest” is going to look a little different this year. As the calendar flips from 2025 to 2026, and the program celebrates its 55th year, it’ll experience a historic first. The event, hosted by Ryan Seacrest from New York, will welcome a Central Time zone midnight countdown live from Chicago. A new host will lead Chicago’s coverage, including fireworks, performances, and live updates. It’s the first time in the show’s more than 50-year history that the Windy City will be put in the spotlight, joining the East Coast Time zone countdown from New York’s Times Square. In previous years, it has also hosted countdowns from Los Angeles and Nashville.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

ChatGPT is the reason why this Michigan woman took home a $100,000 lottery prize. Tammy Carvey of Wyandotte purchased her Powerball ticket after asking the artificial intelligence software for the numbers she should play for the Sept. 6 drawing. Carvey was surprised to learn she had the four white balls and the red Powerball. “When I checked the winning numbers, I saw I matched four white balls and the Powerball and knew I had to have won something," Carvey, 45, told lottery officials. "Google told me it was a $50,000 prize, so that’s what I thought I’d won," she said. "It wasn’t until I logged into my Michigan Lottery account that I realized I added the Power Play to my ticket and actually won $100,000! My husband and I were in total disbelief." According to the Michigan Lottery, Carvey said she takes her chances with Powerball under special circumstances. “I only play Powerball when the jackpot gets up there and the jackpot was over $1 billion so I bought a ticket,” she told lottery officials. With her prize money, Carvey plans to pay off her home and save the rest.

THE LIST

For many, the darker days and colder weather of fall and winter takes a toll on their mental health. Seasonal depression can set in, bringing down our mood and energy, and making us want to retreat inside. But experts say that reconnecting with the outdoors, even when it’s cold outside, could be the key to supporting your well-being. Research shows nature improves mood, sleep, and community connection. Experts recommend these strategies to stay connected with nature through winter…

1. Turn discomfort into opportunity

Dress appropriately and embrace outdoor sensations, rather than avoiding them. This could mean “layering up”. There’s no bad weather, only inappropriate clothing!

2. Tune into your senses

Observe sights, sounds, smells, and physical sensations to feel grounded and present. This can make you feel more alert, more alive…and often more relaxed.

3. Open up to awe

Look for moments of wonder: stars, branches, birds. Because nearby nature can spark amazement.

4. Take your thoughts for a walk

Walking outdoors helps creativity and gives mental space; movement frees up thinking. Let your mind wander, as you wander outside.

5. Maintain connection

Go outside with others; social connection plus nature boosts mood and resilience.

The bottom line:

Don’t wait until you “feel ready” – just step outside. Any small action can help shift your mood.
