SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Finally! Science has revealed the best way to keep bold seagulls from snatching your beach snacks: yell at them. Researchers at the University of Exeter tested how gulls reacted to different sounds by placing fish and chips in front of them and playing 3 recordings: a man shouting “No, stay away, that’s my food!”, the same man speaking calmly, and a robin’s birdsong. Studying gulls across 9 towns, they found that shouting works best: nearly half of the birds flew away. Calm talking was less effective, while birdsong barely made a difference. The researchers say shouting prompts gulls to retreat, while speaking only slows them down.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

After nearly a decade away, the Four Horsemen are returning to the big screen, with “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” arriving in theaters this weekend. And with it comes a brand-new popcorn bucket. While the movie-themed popcorn bucket trend has gifted us some ridiculous creations, this one is particularly clever, tying in very nicely with the theme of magic that is at the center of the film franchise. When the sides of the bucket are pulled away, it looks as though the popcorn is literally disappearing. It is selling for $28 at Cinemark, but prices can vary at different chains.

‘Dr. Evil’ and ‘Mini-Me’s’ costumes from the “Austin Powers” franchise probably won’t bring in one MEELLION dollars at auction … but they’re not going for chump change either: The 2 gray suits are expected to be sold for thousands, and groovy bidders can make a play for them right now in Propstore’s Winter Memorabilia Auction. Myers wore his suit in a couple iconic scenes in “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery”, including the one when his character attempted to blackmail the United Nations out of $100 billion, and during a memorable confrontation with his son ‘Scott’, played by Seth Green. James Van Der Beek has teamed up with Propstore to offer fans a rare opportunity to take home cherished items from his personal collection in their Winter Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction, Dec. 5–7. It features wardrobe, props and set pieces that trace his career. All proceeds will go to help in Van Der Beek’s cancer battle. The actor and father of 6 was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer last year. “Dawson’s Creek” fans will have a chance to own the necklace ‘Dawson’ gifted ‘Joey’ for prom, estimated to bring in up to $53,000. Dawson’s pilot episode outfit is expected to bring in nearly $4,000.

DID YA KNOW!?

Did You Know... Woodpeckers use the same trick tennis players do to power their strokes: synchronized breathing. It was discovered by scientists at Brown University that with every peck, woodpeckers exhale forcefully, boosting core stability — just as athletes grunt during a serve. These birds take tiny 40-millisecond breaths between rapid strikes, hitting up to 9 times per second. Eight muscle groups, from head and neck to hips and tail, work in conjunction, with the stiff neck acting as a handle. Hip muscles adjust power, letting woodpeckers drill tougher wood with precision and force. This pattern mirrors what happens when tennis players grunt during a serve.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Last week, Apple unveiled its latest low-tech accessory, the iPhone Pocket, and the internet hasn’t held back on poking fun at it – or its steep price. The small, knitted bag has no zippers or clips, just a stretchy pocket designed to hold a phone and a few everyday items. The shorter-strap version comes in 8 colors for US $149.95, while the crossbody costs $229.95. For comparison, Apple sold multi-packs of iPod Socks for $29 in 2004 — and a well-reviewed iPhone strap for $59 just last September. Designed with Japanese fashion label Issey Miyake, the new iPhone Pocket does have a sleek design, but reviewers and social media users are roasting it mercilessly. LINK: https://shorturl.at/AKwoh

Who says a great night out has to last all night? Earlybirds Club is a dance party designed for women who still want to have fun…but also have things to do in the morning. Created by friends Laura Baginski and Susie Lee, the club offers a safe, joyful space to unwind, reconnect, and dance…between 6 and 10pm. The concept, which began in Chicago, is now expanding nationwide, spreading early-evening energy and judgment-free dance floors to new communities. One club-goer summed it up perfectly: at one point, she thought her dancing days were now limited to weddings and bar mitzvahs, but Earlybirds changed everything. Now she dances for hours – and still gets to bed before 11. LINK: https://shorturl.at/9UCvY

FUN FACT FOR YOU:
Share this with your friends... they'll think you're really smart!

✓ The St. Francis Xavier University’s athletic teams (in Nova Scotia) are named the “X-Men” and “X-Women”.

✓ If your last name is closer to the end of the alphabet, you’re more likely to be an impulse spender.
✓ When you listen to music, your heart can sync to the rhythm.

People who complain tend to live longer.

WEIRD NEWS

A California driver took “DIY” a little too far, crafting a hand-drawn license plate after losing their original. Officers from California Highway Patrol’s Merced station pulled the vehicle over after noticing something “unusual” about the plate. Close inspection revealed the homemade creation featured roughly sketched letters and numbers, the California plate logo, and even a fake registration sticker. In an IG post, officials gave the driver “points for creativity”, but reminded them that only state-issued plates are legal. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/4kw5uvc2

THE LIST

FUN WITH MERRIAM-WEBSTER:

Say what you will about the English language, you’ve got to admit it has a sense of humor…

❑ ‘Phonetic’ is not.

❑ ‘Abbreviation’ is 12 letters.

❑ ‘Thesaurus’ doesn’t have a synonym.

❑ ‘Monosyllabic’ has 5 syllables.

It’s in credibly rare to find a ‘cranny’ without a ‘nook’ before it.

If you ‘hunker’, you’re probably going down. Same with ‘batten’, but be sure to add some ‘hatches’.

You rarely see ‘scantily’ without ‘clad’

Not to pile on, but every ‘c’ in Pacific Ocean is pronounced differently.

And just to rub salt in the wound, isn’t it a bit cruel that there’s an ‘s’ in ‘lisp’?
