SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

A new study suggests that heading the ball may affect amateur soccer players’ brain health. Researchers reported in Neurology that frequent headers can cause changes in the brain’s cerebral cortex folds, with more impacts linked to poorer performance on thinking and memory tests. The study involved 352 amateur soccer players around New York City, averaging 26 years old, and compared them to 77 athletes in non-collision sports. Players who headed the ball most often – up to 3,152 times per year – showed the greatest disruption in white matter in the brain’s sulci. The findings add to growing concerns over sports-related head impacts.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

The “Now You See Me” franchise’s reappearing act is landing on the top of box office charts, debuting ahead of the weekend’s other new releases “The Running Man” and “Keeper”. Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” took in an estimated 3-day total of $22 million. The Running Man landed behind projections, with an estimated debut of $18 over the weekend.

Labubu, the plush toy line of scruffy cute-ugly monsters, could be headed to the big screen. Sony Pictures, home of “KPop Demon Hunters”, has picked up the screen rights to the Chinese doll brand with the aim of making a movie and launching a franchise. Labubus exploded in popularity recently, thanks to Pop Mart’s selling them via “blind boxes,” meaning buyers never know what they are until they open the package. Another strong factor was the adoption of the toys by celebs, particularly K-pop group Blackpink member Lisa, who used them as accessories.

HBO’s “Euphoria” has finally officially wrapped production on its highly anticipated third season, marking the end of a 9-month shoot. Season 3 is set to premiere in 2026, arriving more than 4 years after the second season concluded. The upcoming instalment features 8 episodes, and brings back one of TV’s most star-studded ensembles. Zendaya returns as ‘Rue Bennett’, reprising her Emmy-winning role, joined again by series regulars Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Hunter Schafer, Alexa Demie, Maude Apatow, and Eric Dane.

DID YA KNOW!?

Did You Know...Vine, the popular video sharing app of the 2010s is getting a second life as “diVine”, a reboot backed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey’s nonprofit. The platform will relaunch with 10,000 classic Vine clips, and invite new uploads…while enforcing a firm no-AI rule. Fans, especially millennials, are cheering the comeback, and one commenter summed up the thoughts of many when they wrote: “A platform without AI might be exactly what the internet needs right now.”

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A few months ago, NestlĂ© announced its ‘Harry Potter’ line of coffee creamers, which includes the Coffee-Mate flavors “Cauldron Cake” and “Peppermint Toad”. Now fans can add a third “spellbinding” potion to their mugs. The “Butterbeer” creamer features notes of butterscotch, cream, and caramel, and comes in 3 versions: regular, Zero Sugar, and a Butterbeer Cold Foam. Coffee-Mate says it’s the first Butterbeer creamer in the US, rolling out nationwide by early 2026. The company said it is “inviting fans to transform their daily brew into something truly enchanting.” The creamers will be sold in 28-ounce bottles for about $4.49, while the cold foam arrives in a 14-ounce canister for $5.49.

Three brothers in Northern California discovered a pristine copy of the comic book Superman No. 1 while sorting through their late mother’s attic — a find that could fetch over $6 million, potentially making it the world’s most valuable comic. The attic also held 5 early Action Comics issues, including Superman’s 1938 debut. Bought during the Great Depression and preserved for decades, the collection astonished experts for its near-perfect condition. Heritage Auctions calls the discovery a “life-changing windfall” and a twist on the “Mom threw away my comics” story.

WEIRD NEWS

A Russian man went to extreme lengths to avoid a shopping trip with his wife — by faking a carjacking. Police say he deliberately damaged his own Toyota Corolla to make it look stolen, hoping the “crime” would get him out of a mall visit. His wife reported the car missing, then later found it nearby. When cops investigated, they noticed the story didn’t add up. After questioning, the man admitted the hoax. Now, instead of a shopping spree, he faces up to 2 years in prison for filing a false report.
