SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Harvard researchers say that filtered coffee is the healthiest way to drink your daily brew. Using a paper filter removes some compounds that can raise LDL cholesterol, while still preserving coffee’s antioxidants. Filtered methods – such as drip or pour-over – also offer the benefits of improved alertness, metabolism, and heart health…without the added risks, such as impacting heart health over time, which are linked to unfiltered styles like espresso or French press. Experts suggest drinking 3 to 4 cups a day and avoiding heavy sugar, cream, or flavored syrups, which can cancel out coffee’s natural advantages. Brewed wisely, filtered coffee can be a simple, heart-friendly habit that fits into a balanced lifestyle.

After taking home a “Dancing With the Stars” mirrorball trophy, Robert Irwin isn’t hanging up his dancing shoes just yet. He has been announced as one of the celebrities who will join the DWTS pros on tour this winter and spring. The tour’s official Instagram revealed which fan favorites will be joining the fun. The post was captioned, “Yeah, we’re screaming too.” Irwin will appear at 8 tour stops in April. His appearances are scheduled alongside pro-partner and fellow mirrorball winner Witney Carson. Did You Know... Sloths Can Hold Their Breath Longer Than Dolphins? Sloths are known for their slow movements, but did you know they can hold their breath for up to 40 minutes? That’s longer than a dolphin, which typically holds its breath for about 10 minutes. Sloths have an efficient oxygen system that allows them to stay underwater for extended periods.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

According to the most recent data from the INRIX Global Traffic Scorecard, the average American driver loses approximately 42 hours per year sitting in traffic.

Weight-loss drugs seem to be everywhere these days…and now get ready for Ozempic 2.0! Cheaper, pill-based weight-loss drugs may be on the way. Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly are preparing once-a-day GLP-1 pills that could arrive as early as next year, offering patients an easier, potentially less-expensive alternative to injections like Ozempic and Wegovy. These medications come as demand for weight-loss treatments explodes, though current options remain costly, can cause side effects, and require needles, which many people dislike. And beyond pills, drugmakers are developing more powerful injectables, combinations that may reduce side effects…and even monthly treatments that could match today’s best drugs, which are usually taken weekly. While FDA approval is still pending, experts say expanded options and competition could lower prices.

WEIRD NEWS

The first-ever Taco Bell DC 50K took place on Saturday, sending nearly 1,000 runners into below-freezing morning temperatures outside a Taco Bell in Old Town Alexandria. The ultramarathon required participants to cover 50km … while stopping at 9 Taco Bells across Alexandria, Arlington and Washington, DC. At each stop, runners had to buy and eat a menu item – no drinks, no stomach-aid medicines, and receipts required at the finish. Specific items, like a Chalupa Supreme by stop 4, and a Burrito Supreme or Nachos Bell Grande by stop 8, were mandatory. With an 11-hour time limit, the race blended endurance, logistics, fast food strategy…and a lot of stomach bravery. First-place finisher Mike Smith completed the race in 4:12:35. His training routine? Every day after work he downed a happy-hour beer, then went running.
