SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

A new survey shows that people have a new top item on their holiday wish list: cold, hard cash. According to a poll of 5,000 adults in the US, money is the #1 item they are hoping to receive, with many hoping for more than $600, and 1 in 5 saying their ideal present would be to receive help paying bills. Utilities, rent, and credit card payments are the most-desired expenses to cover. But still, people plan to spend about $1,120 on gifts for others…you’ll notice that’s far more than they’re hoping to receive. For survey respondents, the financial strain continues into January, when 41% plan to cut back, and nearly a quarter say they’ll struggle with regular bills. Despite the financial stress, most agree that practical gifts are now perfectly acceptable, even if asking for bill money feels less festive than opening a wrapped present. By the way, after cash and bill payments, wearables and accessories came in third as the most-wanted holiday gifts.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

“Little House on the Prairie” fans was a new side of the cast members they’ve known and loved for 50 years. During the “Little House on the Prairie Cast Reunion”, several stars from the beloved NBC drama performed in a talent show in a barn. Alison Arngrim, who played ‘Nellie Oleson’, shared details on the fan event, describing the “Little House Cast Follies” as “an evening of storytelling, surprises and heartfelt humor as the cast takes the stage for an immersive holiday experience.” The Little House on the Prairie Cast Reunion event was Dec 12 - 14 at Strathearn Historic Park in Simi Valley, CA.

Andy Dick is speaking about his frightening drug overdose. The comedian told TMZ that he’s alive and OK after being seen slumped over a set of stairs outside a building in Hollywood as friends attempted to help. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded Tuesday after receiving a report of an overdose involving a 59-year-old man. Bystanders believe Narcan was administered to revive him. The troubled comedian invited a TMZ photographer into his L.A. home to chat about his brush with death, and said he doesn’t “mind doing a little crack every now and then.” The outlet reports he made it clear he’s not planning to seek professional help.

Following Quentin Tarantino’s controversial remarks labeling Paul Dano a “weak” actor, Dano has scored a new role, starring alongside Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz. The psychological thriller is described as Oscar-winning filmmaker Florian Zeller’s follow-up to “The Son”. Zeller said: “We are thrilled to welcome Paul Dano to the cast. From Little Miss Sunshine to There Will Be Blood, Paul has consistently impressed me as an actor. He possesses…something genuinely unique and…is truly irreplaceable.” No word on a title.

DID YA KNOW!?

Did You Know... The Longest Recorded Flight of a Chicken Was 13 Seconds?
While chickens aren’t known for their flying abilities, the longest flight ever recorded by a chicken lasted a surprising 13 seconds. Although they can flap and soar short distances, chickens are generally too heavy to be efficient fliers and prefer to stick to the ground.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A study found that being good-looking can hurt a man’s career because the people in charge of hiring see attractive men as a threat.

It turns out Barbie may not be the radical original she’s long been sold as. In “Barbieland: The Unauthorized History”, author Tarpley Hitt challenges Mattel’s carefully curated Barbie history, arguing the iconic doll was heavily inspired by Bild Lilli, a risqué German adult doll from the 1950s, based on a ribald comic book. According to Hitt, Mattel obscured those roots while aggressively protecting Barbie’s flawless image through lawsuits, intimidation and tight brand control. The book details alleged copying, corporate bullying and even espionage, painting Barbie less as a feminist breakthrough and more as a savvy triumph of marketing. Still, Hitt notes, the myth endured—turning Barbie into a lasting symbol of American consumer culture.

FUN FACT FOR YOU:
Share this with your friends... they'll think you're really smart!

✓ In one teaspoon of soil, there are more microorganisms than there are people on Earth.

✓ Botanically speaking, an avocado is a berry. So is a banana.

✓ If you’re average, you’ll have about 1,400 dreams this year.

✓ The average robin has about 3,000 feathers. The average chicken? 5,000 to 8,000.

A little gross, but also funny: Lobsters pee out of their faces. And even more interesting, they do this as a way of attracting a mate.

WEIRD NEWS

A UK man who converted a staple gun into an actual gun has been jailed for 5 years. 45-year-old Jamie Young admitted to manufacturing and possessing a firearm after being caught with the weapon on a train. After being seen taking drugs, cops found the modified staple gun in his suitcase, along with drugs and 2 phones. Tests confirmed the device was a viable firearm. Phone evidence showed Young test-firing the weapon in a field.

THE LIST

FASCINATING CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS AROUND THE WORLD:

1. The Caganer (Catalonia): A tiny figurine is placed in nativity scenes, which appears to be (ahem!) pooping.

2. KFC Christmas (Japan): In Japan, it is customary to celebrate Christmas with buckets of fried chicken. A marketing campaign worked so well that the Colonel basically became Santa.

3. The Gävle Goat (Sweden): A 43-foot straw goat is erected each year. The real tradition is people trying to keep it from being burned by pranksters.

4. Roller-Skating to Mass (Venezuela): Caracas residents roller-skate all night, then straight into morning mass.

5. Christmas Picnics (South Africa): It’s summer – so forget roasting chestnuts…and grab a grill. Christmas BBQs on the beach are called “braais”.

6. Parols (Philippines): These are gorgeous star lanterns that make our Christmas lights look like sad, flickering amateurs.

7. Tió de Nadal (Catalonia): A smiling log that kids feed until it “poops” presents on Christmas.

8. Christmas Spiders (Ukraine): Spider ornaments hang on trees, thanks to a folktale about webs turning into tinsel.

9. Krampus (Alpine Regions): Krampus is a horned monster who punishes naughty kids before Christmas.

10. La Befana (Italy): A friendly Christmas witch who delivers gifts on January 5.

11. Night of the Radishes (Mexico): Giant radishes are carved into masterpieces for one night only.
