Show Notes for Saturday, December 13 and Sunday, December 14, 2025

Today we visit with Brad Ledwith about “The Mighty Oaks”, a documentary about a high school lacrosse team in Morgan Hill, CA. It follows the 2024 boys' team through personal challenges, loss, and growth-showing how a community built something greater than just a sports program. https://amzn.to/3MWtYGb

SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Don’t believe that old line about Christmas being for kids. According to a new poll, more than half of parents get just as excited as their kids when it’s time to unwrap gifts. The Talker Research survey of 2,000 millennial parents in the US also revealed that kids ask about their gifts an average of 51 times over the holiday season. Mons and Dads were also asked about how they keep those gifts a secret from their children. Two in three (63%) said they disguise gifts as something else, and 34% will let their kids find “decoy gifts” to throw them off the scent. That can cause its own problems, though — over half (55%) of parents admitted they sometimes forget where they’ve hidden gifts, only to find them sometime after the holidays. And what are the most-common spots for hiding gifts? (Kids…pay attention here!) Top spots include closets, parents’ bedroom, in the car, the basement, and the garage (20%). More creative hiding spots include: hiding gifts at a family member’s or friend’s home, in the attic, in suitcases, in sheds, at work, inside appliances, and in the trash(!). The survey also found that over half (57%) of kids have found or opened a gift before they were supposed to.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

“Stranger Things” Season 5 is off to a monstrous start, with the biggest premiere week ever for an English-language series on Netflix. The first 4 episodes, which debuted on November 26, catapulted the latest season of the Duffer Brothers‘ supernatural drama to #1 on the weekly TV rankings, with 59.6M global views. That bests the premiere-week record previously held by “Wednesday” Season 1. The second season of “Squid Game” still holds the all-time premiere-week record, with 68M views.

Hugh Jackman is singing Kate Hudson’s praises. Two decades after the Academy Awards last nominated her, Jackman believes Hudson will finally strike gold come March. The “Song Sung Blue” costars shared kind words about each other’s performances while accepting the inaugural Musical Tribute during The Gotham Awards’ 35th annual awards ceremony on Monday, kicking off the film’s awards circuit run. Onstage, Jackman said: “Kate Hudson is not only one of the great stars of our business, she is a consummate actor. I believe this time she is going to get an Oscar.”

Tara Reid is defending her previous claim that she was drugged at a Rosemont IL hotel on Nov. 23, despite police saying there’s no video evidence. She claimed in a police report that she was taken out on a stretcher from the DoubleTree Chicago O’Hare Airport because she was drugged by a stranger after one drink. Wednesday the Rosemont Public Safety Department told PEOPLE that surveillance footage does not indicate that Reid was drugged. Reid’s statement says: “Bottom line is no one ends up in the hospital incapacitated for over 8 hours after a drink.” She says the “last thing” she remembered was “having one drink and waking up in the hospital the next day without remembering anything.”

Jimmy Stewart is getting the biopic treatment, with “Riverdale’s” KJ Apa set to play the legendary actor, and 84-year-old Jimmy Hawkins, who played the youngest Bailey kid in “It’s a Wonderful Life”, says he’s as curious as the rest of us to see how it turns out. The film, executive produced by Stewart’s daughter Kelly Stewart-Harcourt, is said to follow Stewart’s path from leading man and eligible bachelor to World War II commander, then a veteran struggling to readjust back home before ultimately returning to the big screen with the classic Christmas tale. Titled “Jimmy”, the movie is expected out next November, just before the 80th anniversary of It’s a Wonderful Life.

WEIRD NEWS

A bar in Altrincham, England, has sparked controversy by banning solo drinkers after 9pm. Carl Peters, the owner of “Alibi”, says the policy is meant to “mitigate risk” and maintain a safe environment. He explained the policy, saying a majority of solo customers have “no-one to talk to, so they start bothering other groups.” The move has divided opinion online, with some criticizing it as unfair to solo visitors, while others understand the safety rationale. Peters posted about the backlash on Instagram, admitting he faced “fury” from the public, but insisting the guidelines are a standard procedure aimed at keeping everyone safe.
