THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!

Dear John,

I have a different kind of letter for you this week. I've heard you ask for fun letters. I hope this makes your day! My family is going to be staying together in a giant home we're renting in the middle of where we all live. We're each driving a few hours towards each other and there is a huge amazing rental home there with room for all of us. Here's where my question comes in. This home has a giant theater room. I we're spending a week there and I want to have a list of the best Christmas movies ever! I hear you two talking about movies all the time, so I thought you might have some suggestions! This is fun, right? We have some kids, so maybe two lists. One for the whole family and one for the adults, after the kids go to sleep!

SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

You’ve probably heard of the infamous “27 Club” — a list of music icons like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse, all of whom passed away at age 27. Now, new research suggests fame itself may shorten a singer’s life. A study in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health found that famous singers die about 4 years earlier than comparable non-famous performers. Researchers analyzed 648 artists active between 1950 and 1990, matching stars with non-famous peers by age, gender, nationality, genre and role. Famous singers lived to an average of 75, versus 79 for non-famous ones, and the added risk appeared only after achieving fame. Solo acts fared worst, having a 26% higher death risk than band members. The team suspects chronic stress, scrutiny and pressure may outweigh fame’s financial perks.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Netflix released the trailer for “Diddy: The Reckoning,” a 4-part documentary series that dropped today on Netflix from executive producer Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and Emmy-winning director Alexandria Stapleton. It examines the rise and fall of Sean Combs, with the official synopsis calling it “a staggering examination of the media mogul, music legend and convicted offender.” The trailer begins with footage of Diddy 6 days before his arrest in Sept. 2024, as he tells someone over the phone: “We need to find someone who will work with us who has worked in the dirtiest of dirty businesses. We are losing.” LINK: https://youtu.be/iGyKtVA6ntI

On the eve of the release of Netflix’s docuseries about Sean “Diddy” Combs, produced by his longtime foe Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, the embattled mogul’s lawyers sent a cease-and-desist letter to the streaming giant, demanding it not release “Sean Combs: The Reckoning.” A spokesperson for Combs also accused Netflix of using “stolen footage” in what they called a “shameful hit piece.” The footage in question is shown in the official trailer, which was released on Monday. It shows Combs saying: “We need to find someone who will work with us who has worked in the dirtiest of dirty businesses. We are losing.” A Netflix spokesperson said the footage was obtained legally.

Whitney Leavitt, best known for starring in the Hulu reality series “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives,” has set her Broadway debut. She’ll play ‘Roxie Hart’ in “Chicago” at the Ambassador Theatre for 6 weeks beginning Feb. 2. The news comes after Leavitt’s recent finish as a semifinalist on Season 34 of “Dancing With the Stars.” Her run on the dance series was hotly debated, with many considering her the most skilled contestant and speculating that the November release of “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” Season 3 caused fans to vote against her.

Sarah Paulson will receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today. One of the defining icons of “American Horror Story” is finally getting the recognition after years of serving up terror, talent and iconic characters. Her career achievements include including a Primetime Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Tony Award. In 2017, Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Holland Taylor and Amanda Peet are scheduled to speak at the ceremony.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

The first day of Hanukkah is this Sunday, December 14th.

So…that big jewel heist happened at WHAT museum? Having a bit of trouble getting your tongue around the word “Louvre”? Well, you’re not alone A new list from Babbel and The Captioning Group highlights 2025’s most bungled words, and it includes the famed museum, which is correctly pronounced LOOV-ruh. News anchors also frequently mangled the name of newly elected New York mayor Zohran Mamdani (zoh-RAHN mam-DAH-nee), often flipping the “M” and “N.” Other verbal tripwires included acetaminophen (uh-SEE-tuh-MIH-nuh-fen), Alex Murdaugh (AL-ick MUR-dock) and the diabetes drug Mounjaro (mown-JAHR-oh). The UK list overlapped, featuring words like Louvre, Mounjaro and Storm Éowyn (ay-OH-win). The year’s surprise twist came from (careful now!) Denzel Washington, who revealed his first name is actually pronounced DEN-zul, though his mother opted for Den-ZELLE.

WEIRD NEWS

Temple staff in Bangkok were shocked when they heard a faint knocking from a coffin brought in for cremation. The brother of a 65-year-old woman believed she had died after she stopped breathing, and placed her in a coffin for a long drive to honor her wish to donate her organs. A hospital refused her without a death certificate, so he brought her to a temple offering free cremations. While discussing paperwork, staff heard the knocking, opened the coffin, and found her moving and conscious. She was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
