SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Everyone is saying that times are tough this holiday season. And that’s why Gen Z is rethinking holiday gift-giving this year. Instead of panic-buying presents, many young adults say their ‘presence’ is the present this season. According to a Deloitte report, Americans born between 1997 and 2012 plan to spend about 34% less on gifts than last year, choosing quality time and shared experiences over physical items. The shift comes as prices for traditional gifts continue to climb, with electronics, toys and apparel all costing significantly more. Eventbrite data shows a surge in searches for concerts, light displays and food events, suggesting experiences are replacing boxes under the tree. So it’s pretty handy that the data also pointed out that 92% of Americans are more than happy to receive experiential gifts.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Lindsay Lohan lent her voice to ‘Maggie Simpson’ in Sunday’s new episode of “The Simpsons”. The character has rarely spoken in the long-running animated series. Sunday’s episode, titled “Parahormonal Activity”, follows Bart as a teenager as he learns to drive. Maggie becomes upset, and points out that when he’s behind the wheel, “everybody honks at us and yells bad words and shows us fingers!” ‘Marge’ quickly hushes her and urges her to rest her voice, a nod to how infrequently she speaks. Maggie’s first word was famously delivered by Elizabeth Taylor in the 1992 episode “Lisa’s First Word”. LINK: https://tinyurl.com/br68ksak

While “Zootopia 2” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” clawed for the #1 spot at the North American box office, James L. Brooks’ political dramedy “Ella McCay” had to settle for scraps. Zootopia 2 took the top spot, grossing an estimated $26 million over the weekend. It crossed $1 billion globally on Friday after just 17 days in theaters, the fastest PG film to ever reach the milestone. Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 grossed an estimated $20 million domestically in its second weekend, while Ella McKay fell well below projections of $4 million in its debut.

“The Twilight Saga” is getting all-new deluxe collector’s editions to celebrate each book’s 20th anniversary. Each edition will feature a floral motif, meant to represent a central theme in the book, plus interactive glided page edges. “New Moon’s” deluxe edition debuts in October 2026. The remaining 3 books in the series will be released in deluxe editions as follows: “Eclipse” in Fall 2027 for its 20th anniversary; “Breaking Dawn” in Fall 2028 for its 20th anniversary; and “Midnight Sun” in Fall 2030 for its 10th anniversary.

This adaptation helps them maintain their powerful bite while keeping the tongue safe and out of the way of their sharp teeth.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A study found that today’s teens drink, smoke, and have less sex than ever before.

This year, The Grinch just might be more popular than Santa. McDonald’s Grinch Meal is the new holiday craze. Out now, the limited-time meal features a Big Mac or 10-piece McNuggets, a drink, and dill pickle “Grinch salt” McShaker fries, along with a pair of Grinch-themed socks…because what’s Grinchier than gifting a pair of…socks? The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive…except at locations where the meal has sold out. Fans are praising the fries and the festive socks, with one Facebooker writing: “The fries disappeared faster than the Whos’ Christmas presents.” Some employees, meanwhile, have shared behind-the-scenes looks at the chaos the meals are causing in stores. WEIRD NEWS

A British man has built the world’s fastest garden shed, reaching an incredible speed of 123.43mph (198.63 km/h). Brian Cade said he was inspired by the TV show “Record Breakers” and wanted a challenge that combined his builder’s skills with his love of classic cars. The 61-year-old’s creation beat the previous record held by fellow Brit Kevin Nicks. Cade now plans to keep upgrading the shed…and hopes to eventually make it street legal. THE LIST

FASCINATING CHRISTMAS TRADITIONS AROUND THE WORLD:

1. The Caganer (Catalonia): A tiny figurine is placed in nativity scenes, which appears to be (ahem!) pooping.

2. KFC Christmas (Japan): In Japan, it is customary to celebrate Christmas with buckets of fried chicken. A marketing campaign worked so well that the Colonel basically became Santa.

3. The Gävle Goat (Sweden): A 43-foot straw goat is erected each year. The real tradition is people trying to keep it from being burned by pranksters.

4. Roller-Skating to Mass (Venezuela): Caracas residents roller-skate all night, then straight into morning mass.

5. Christmas Picnics (South Africa): It’s summer – so forget roasting chestnuts…and grab a grill. Christmas BBQs on the beach are called “braais”.

6. Parols (Philippines): These are gorgeous star lanterns that make our Christmas lights look like sad, flickering amateurs.

7. Tió de Nadal (Catalonia): A smiling log that kids feed until it “poops” presents on Christmas.

8. Christmas Spiders (Ukraine): Spider ornaments hang on trees, thanks to a folktale about webs turning into tinsel.

9. Krampus (Alpine Regions): Krampus is a horned monster who punishes naughty kids before Christmas.

10. La Befana (Italy): A friendly Christmas witch who delivers gifts on January 5.

11. Night of the Radishes (Mexico): Giant radishes are carved into masterpieces for one night only.
