SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

A new survey says that today’s kids may be better with money than their parents were. 61% of parents say their children are more financially responsible at the same age. The poll, taken in the US, also found that kids now take in an average $52 monthly allowance. That’s, of course, far more than their parents did. And paying our kids in cash is fading, with many families using payment apps, kids’ debit cards, or even offering experiences and screen time, instead of money. Parents also pay on a sliding scale: babysitting can earn $13, good grades $12, and chores as little as $8. But responsibility only goes so far: over half of parents say their kids have blown allowance money on bizarre purchases. Like what? One parent reported their kid bought a spider from a classmate “for a dollar”. Other weird things children spent their money on included slime, bags of cheese, fish, a baby chicken, and knockoff versions of trendy Labubu collectibles.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

The Oscars telecast will move from broadcasting to streaming in 2029, switching from ABC to YouTube – a watershed moment for the entertainment business. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that YouTube signed a “multi-year deal” for the “exclusive global rights to the Oscars.” The deal will run through 2033. This underscores a tremendous power shift in the media industry, which has been upended by YouTube and streaming platforms like Netflix.

Kevin Spacey is set to mark his return to the small screen for the first time since he was fired from Netflix’s “House of Cards” in 2017 amid allegations of sexual misconduct. He’ll star in the comedy series “Minimarket” for Italy’s state broadcaster. In the low-budget show, the 2-time Oscar winner plays himself as the imaginary mentor of a young man who works in a Rome convenience store and dreams of becoming a TV star. The promo shows Spacey singing Randy Newman’s ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’ and Frank Sinatra’s ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’ in tandem with Italian actor Filippo Laganà. The show launches Dec. 26.

DID YA KNOW!?

DID YOU KNOW… A single teaspoon of honey is the lifetime work of about 12 bees. Honeybees must visit millions of flowers to produce even small amounts of honey. That makes every drop the result of extraordinary collective effort.

JOKE OF THE DAY

SCOOP OF THE DAY

In response to growing concerns that students are using generative AI to cheat on essays and written exams, many professors are reviving the age-old practice of oral exams to better gauge real understanding of course material. Educators at several North American universities, including University of Toronto, the University of Wyoming and UC San Diego, are adopting real-time “viva voce” (Latin for “by live voice”) assessments because students can’t rely on AI during live questioning. These interactions allow instructors to ask follow-ups, tailor feedback, and evaluate critical thinking, communication, and comprehension. While oral exams demand more faculty time and can raise student anxiety, they’re seen as more resistant to AI misuse than traditional take-home work, and some students report increased engagement and learning.

Cats “meow” more when greeting males than females, according to new research from Ankara University in Türkiye. Using video footage from 31 cat owners arriving home, researchers found cats directed significantly more meows, purrs, and chirps at men. Male owners received an average of 4.3 vocalizations in the first 100 seconds, compared to 1.8 for women. The difference wasn’t linked to the cat’s age, sex, or breed, and vocalizing was the only cat behavior of 22 studied that varied by owner gender. Researchers aren’t sure why cats “talk” more to males.

WEIRD NEWS

The world’s first GLP-1 weight-loss treatment for pets is now being tested. A cat has been successfully dosed in the “MEOW-1” trial of OKV-119, an ultra-long-acting GLP-1 implant designed for feline weight management. Developed by San Francisco–based OKAVA Pharmaceuticals, the implant delivers medication continuously for up to 6 months and may improve cardio-metabolic health, quality of life, and longevity. The study marks a first for weight-loss research in cats and dogs.

SOMETHING SPECIAL WITH HEIDI SMALL

THE LIST

THINGS YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN’T BUY IN BULK:

Headed to the warehouse? Here are some items you might want to think twice about buying too much of…

Spices: Ground spices lose flavor and aroma within 2-3 years. Buy too much, and they’ll go stale before you can use them.

Condiments: Once opened, condiments have surprisingly short shelf lives: ketchup, about 6 months, mustard – 12 months, pickles – 1-3 months.

Dairy: Milk, creamer, yogurt, and similar items sour quickly once opened. Unless you’re feeding a crowd, huge containers tend to spoil before you can use them.

Produce: Big packs of fruits and vegetables seem like a deal, but they rot fast. If you can’t eat them quickly, you’ll end up wasting more than you save.

Eggs: Even refrigerated, raw eggs last only 4-5 weeks past the pack date. Bulk eggs are only worth it if you cook with eggs very often.

Laundry Detergent: Opened liquid detergent loses effectiveness and scent after about 6 months. It won’t “go bad,” but it won’t clean as well if it sits too long.

Perishables You Can’t Freeze: If you don’t have freezer space, bulk perishables spoil quickly. Buy only what you’ll immediately use.

Nuts: Their high fat content makes them turn rancid at over time. Only buy small quantities unless you freeze them.

Sunscreen: It expires after 3 years. Stocking up only makes sense if you reliably use it up each season.
