SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

Good news for those of us who think they might be addicted to ‘The Gram”: You’re probably not actually hooked. A new study found, however, that simply believing you’re addicted to Instagram can make it harder to stop using it. Researchers from CalTech and USC found that when daily users were reminded of addiction warnings, they immediately felt less in control, blamed themselves more, and recalled more failed attempts to cut back. But they also found that actual addiction to IG is rare: only about 2% of users show clinical symptoms, while 18% THINK they’re addicted. Most heavy Instagram use is habit-based, driven by cues like boredom and habit, not true dependence. The media may fuel the confusion, with “social media addiction” appearing far more often in news coverage than “social media habits,” reinforcing that “addicted to Instagram” stereotype.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

The Muppets are back in the new year. Disney+ and ABC have set the premiere for “The Muppet Show”, a TV event special that comes from Seth Rogen featuring guest star Sabrina Carpenter. The Muppet Show will air on the linear network and streaming service on February 4. It will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the iconic series, which ran between 1976 and 1981. ‘Kermit’, ‘Miss Piggy’, and the beloved Muppet gang will all return, with Carpenter joining them on the stage of the original Muppet Theatre.

“The End of an Era” is ending a bit sooner than expected. Disney+ will drop the final 2 episodes of the Taylor Swift docuseries early, ahead of Christmas. While teasing Episodes 3 & 4, which drop today, the streamer announced: “As an early gift to fans…the final 2 episodes will premiere early on Dec. 23 at 12 a.m. PT, only on Disney+.” Those final 2 episodes were initially scheduled to air Dec. 26. DID YA KNOW!?

DID YOU KNOW… There is a species of jellyfish that is biologically immortal. The Turritopsis dohrnii can revert its cells back to an earlier life stage after reaching adulthood, effectively restarting its life cycle unless killed by predators or disease.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Reacting to ‘thirst traps’ on social media could be grounds for divorce – in Türkiye, at least. A court ruled that “liking” other women’s posts on social media can count as evidence when a couple is splitting up. It was determined that the husband had “undermined marital trust” by repeatedly liking women’s photos, and deemed him more at fault than his wife. He was ordered to pay damages and spousal support.

China Eastern Airlines has completed the world’s longest commercial flight route: a 29-hour, 12,400-mile (19,956km) journey from Shanghai to Buenos Aires, equal to half the circumference of the globe. The flight, which stopped in Auckland to refuel and change crew, can’t claim the longest direct route – but still tops global rankings for total travel time. A 316-seat Boeing 777-300ER now operates the route twice weekly, serving Argentina’s growing East Asian community. The new flight route dethrones Singapore Airlines’ 19-hour New York to Singapore flight.

WEIRD NEWS

Police in Sault Ste. Marie ON say a weekend dispute took an unexpectedly frosty turn after a man allegedly weaponized…a snow blower. Yes, the machine meant for clearing driveways became the star of a very Canadian showdown. Cops say a 57-year-old man got into an argument with someone he knew, then “intentionally directed snow” from the blower straight at them — as in, assault by blizzard. No injuries were reported, aside from dignity lost in a cloud of driveway fluff. Officers later found the accused, arrested him, and charged him with assault…by snow blower.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

THE LIST

THINGS YOU PROBABLY SHOULDN’T BUY IN BULK:

Headed to the warehouse? Here are some items you might want to think twice about buying too much of…

Spices: Ground spices lose flavor and aroma within 2-3 years. Buy too much, and they’ll go stale before you can use them.

Condiments: Once opened, condiments have surprisingly short shelf lives: ketchup, about 6 months, mustard – 12 months, pickles – 1-3 months.

Dairy: Milk, creamer, yogurt, and similar items sour quickly once opened. Unless you’re feeding a crowd, huge containers tend to spoil before you can use them.

Produce: Big packs of fruits and vegetables seem like a deal, but they rot fast. If you can’t eat them quickly, you’ll end up wasting more than you save.

Eggs: Even refrigerated, raw eggs last only 4-5 weeks past the pack date. Bulk eggs are only worth it if you cook with eggs very often.

Laundry Detergent: Opened liquid detergent loses effectiveness and scent after about 6 months. It won’t “go bad,” but it won’t clean as well if it sits too long.

Perishables You Can’t Freeze: If you don’t have freezer space, bulk perishables spoil quickly. Buy only what you’ll immediately use.

Nuts: Their high fat content makes them turn rancid at over time. Only buy small quantities unless you freeze them.

Sunscreen: It expires after 3 years. Stocking up only makes sense if you reliably use it up each season.
