New research challenges the idea of “happy weight”. That’s the theory that content couples tend to “soften up” because they spend time Netflix and chillin’ with ice cream instead of exercising together. UCLA researchers found that strong, supportive marriages may actually protect against obesity. Nearly 100 adults were evaluated on everything from BMI and diet to brain scans, hormones, and gut health. Those in nurturing marriages had lower BMIs, fewer signs of food addiction, and better control over cravings. It was also determined that happy couples tend to have healthier gut metabolites and higher oxytocin…that’s the “love hormone” linked to lower stress and better self-control. The findings suggest that stable, supportive relationships may boost metabolism, curb overeating, and strengthen habits that keep weight in check.

Cassettes are back, baby! Once left for dead by CDs and streaming, audio cassette sales in the UK and US recently hit their highest levels in decades, helped by major artists like Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish releasing their new albums on tape. While far from their 1980s sales peak, cassettes offer something digital formats can’t: nostalgia a sense of connection, and the ability to physically touch your music collection. Fragile, inconvenient and low-fi, they still appeal to fans who enjoy owning a physical object…and embracing a slower, more intentional way of listening.
Major retailers and tech giants are rolling out new AI tools to help you with your holiday shopping, offering smarter recommendations, price tracking…and even hands-free purchasing. Walmart, Amazon, Google and OpenAI are all using AI assistants that can compare products, recall your preferences and answer detailed questions – sometimes even calling local stores to check stock. AI’s potential to simplify the search for the perfect present is most apparent in tools that promise to give shoppers faster and more detailed results than a web browser with a lot fewer clicks. Salesforce estimates AI will influence $73 billion in global holiday sales this year, way up from last year. And for the first time, not only can AI agents complete some purchases automatically, Amazon, OpenAI and Google working on tools that would allow for seamless AI-powered shopping by taking consumers from browsing to buying within the same program, instead of having to go to a retailer’s website to complete a purchase.

WEIRD NEWS
When the Tokyo Pokémon theme park opens in February, it’ll require a fitness test to enter the forest-themed section. Yomiuriland is opening its Pokémon theme park Poképark Kanto in February, but according to the official website, the Pokémon Forest nature trail will be off limits to children under 5…and everyone else had better be up for the long hike. Before entering, participants will need to prove they can handle climbing 110 stairs. While some online commenters celebrated what some cruelly referred to as a “no fatties” policy, others lamented that many disabled people and seniors would be excluded from that part of the park.
