SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
For generations, family arguments centered on chores and homework. Now, technology has taken over. A new survey finds 28% of parents say screen use is now their top source of conflict with kids, surpassing chores and grades. Nearly 9 in 10 parents said they argue with their children over screen time, and half say these disputes happen weekly. Despite 95% of parents setting internet rules and 97% discussing online safety, risks remain widespread: 59% of kids report seeing videos depicting extreme violence, serious injury, or death in the past year. Experts warn that confiscating devices alone isn’t enough, urging parents to focus on teaching healthy digital habits and self-regulation rather than relying solely on punishment.

Matthew Perry has finally received a grave plaque more than 2 years after his death. The “Friends” star’s final resting place, at LA’s Forest Lawn Memorial Park, had originally gone unmarked to protect the family’s privacy – a common practice for celebrity burials. But now, a shiny new bronze plaque adorns Perry’s mausoleum, and it includes a special reference to his beloved sitcom. It reads “Matthew Langford Perry,” with the dates of his birth and death listed underneath. The final line says: “Much loved — Friend”.
“One Battle After Another” was named best picture by the National Society of Film Critics, in the group’s 60th annual vote Saturday. In addition to the film earning the top prize, Paul Thomas Anderson won best director; Benicio del Toro won best supporting actor, and Teyana Taylor won best supporting actress. The best actor prize went to Ethan Hawke for “Blue Moon”, over One Battle After Another’s lead, Leonardo DiCaprio.

OF THE DAY
When Robert Cockwill, who is now 80, proposed to Janet (now 75) in 1969, he used a cash advance from the Canadian Wheat Board to buy her an engagement ring. The ring later went missing, and a replacement was bought. Fast forward to 2025: their grandson and his girlfriend unearthed it from their Calgary-area garden’s carrot patch, 5 decades after it disappeared. The diamonds were still intact. Janet now keeps the original ring stashed safely, and still wears the replacement, just to be safe. It’s a surprising Christmas miracle that has captured hearts online.
