SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

If you sometimes feel as though your mind has “gone blank”, you’ll be relieved to know that a new study suggests that can be completely normal. Consciousness can briefly “pause” while you’re awake, according to researchers, who found that people experience complete mental blankness about 16% of the time during simple tasks, and it’s a different experience from your mind wandering. During these moments, the eyes still see, but brain activity shows visual information never reaches your conscious awareness. Unlike mind wandering, which speeds responses, mind blanking slows reactions and causes missed cues. Brain patterns during these lapses resemble those seen in deep sleep or anesthesia, hinting at brief gaps in conscious experience.

A federal appeals court tossed a copyright lawsuit claiming Tom Cruise’s 2022 hit sequel “Top Gun: Maverick” improperly used material from a magazine article that inspired the original 1986 film. The court ruled that “Top Gun: Maverick” is not similar enough to Ehud Yonay’s 1983 article “Top Guns,” about the US Navy Fighter Weapons School, for Paramount to have breached its 1983 agreement with the writer. Paramount credited Yonay in the first movie, but following Yonay’s death in 2012, his widow and son took over the copyright and terminated the agreement with Paramount. Paramount did not compensate or credit them for the sequel, spurring a lawsuit

“Stranger Things” may be over, but now fans are getting the story behind its finale. Netflix has announced “One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5”, a standalone documentary on the making of the show’s final installment. The project is “a sweeping behind-the-scenes chronicle that follows the cast, creators and crew as they bring the final season to life – and say goodbye to the show that changed them forever,” according to a synopsis. The documentary arrives on Netflix Monday, Jan. 12.

SCOOP OF THE DAY

If you’ve ever wondered how well you’re ageing, doctors say you can do a quick check with one simple test. The sit-to-stand test, which measures how many times a person can rise from a chair in 30 seconds, offers insight into strength, balance and flexibility. Widely used in medical settings, the test has been linked to risks such as falls, cardiovascular disease and even early mortality. Average scores decline steadily with age, but low results at any age may signal underlying health concerns. According to the CDC, the average “STS” test scores for each age group are:

age 20-24: 50 per minute for men, 47 for women

60-64: 14 for men, 12 for women

65-74: 12 for men, and 11 for women

75-79: 11 for men, and 10 for women

80-84: 10 for men, and 9 for women (I think by this point, you’re not measuring how well you’re ageing…you’re measuring how well you’ve AGED!)

85-89: 8 for both men and women

90-94: 7 for men, 4 for women

Experts say the simple test can be done at home and provides a quick snapshot of overall physical fitness…and can even be a predictor of mortality! LINK: https://tinyurl.com/34cyrf98

WEIRD NEWS

One in 10 teenagers say talking with AI chatbots is more satisfying than chatting with real people, and one in 3 would choose AI for serious conversations. Experts at University of Oxford link this shift to a growing loneliness crisis, hitting young people especially hard. With long waits for professional mental health support, AI companions are stepping in, offering surprisingly human-like interactions. While specialized mental health bots can help, everyday AI use may reflect deeper social and emotional gaps in teens’ lives.
