Swedish researchers have found that people with tattoos face a 29% higher risk of skin cancer than those without, even after factoring in sun exposure and other risks. Tattoo inks can contain carcinogenic substances in both black and colored pigments. Interestingly, only 30% of melanomas appeared at tattoo sites, suggesting these chemicals might have systemic effects, which become apparent elsewhere in the body. Risk was highest (67% increase) for who have had tattoos for 10-15 years. While still lower than the danger from UV exposure, the new research highlights the fact that while most people consider pain and permanence before getting a tattoo, they but rarely think of the cancer risk.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Ian Ziering’s 2023 biker brawl has come back to haunt him. The “Beverly Hills, 90210” actor has been accused of battery, assault, infliction of emotional distress, malicious prosecution, and negligence, in a civil complaint filed by Jacob Hernandez, over the road rage incident. The plaintiff claims he and a friend, both on motorbikes, stopped in front of Ziering’s braked Mercedes in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve 2023. The duo say they were “not impeding the flow of traffic in any way”. Hernandez says Ziering got out of the car and, “completely unprompted,” pushed him, injuring both him and his friend, and damaging his bike. He added that a subsequent “melee occurred between [Ziering] and multiple individuals who came to the aid of [Hernandez].”

‘Malcolm’ is officially back in the middle. Hulu’s revival of the hit early 2000s sitcom, titled “Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair,” has revealed its first trailer, and announced an April 10 premiere date. The new 4-part event follows grown-up child prodigy Malcolm, still played by Frankie Muniz, as he and his daughter (Keeley Karsten) reunite with his family after hiding from them for over a decade. In the trailer, Muniz says: “My life is fantastic now. All I had to do was stay away from my family!” But he is roped back into the family dynamic when his parents, played by Bryan Cranston and Jane Kaczmarek, demand he attend their 40th wedding anniversary party. Is your dog or cat getting older? How can you tell if your pet is considered a “senior”? The good news is that geriatric veterinary care is advancing, with pets now living an average of 11.3 years. Cats typically enter old age around 10, progressing through mature, senior, and super-senior stages. For dogs, age depends on size: small breeds reach senior status around 12, while medium and large dogs hit this stage earlier, around 6. Aging doesn’t mean the end is near, but it’s a cue for owners to adjust routines, medical care, and living spaces, so your furry friend remains happy, healthy, and comfortable in their later years. These adjustments might include making the animal’s environment more accessible so it can easily reach its food, water, resting and hiding spots. A few props and adjustments can make a real difference, including small steps to climb onto the sofa, armchairs, firm and low cushions, or raised bowls for pets suffering from joint problems.

WEIRD NEWS

The residents of Haverhill, Massachusetts, have been overwhelmed – literally – by the constant sweet aroma from the city’s massive Dunkin’ Donuts factory. At a recent city council meeting, Sean Wilson complained: “My house smells like donuts all the time…for the last 2 months.” The 95,000-square-foot plant churns out a million donuts a day, supplying hundreds of Dunkin’ shops nationwide. The company’s lawyer assured officials that filters, hoods, and cleaning routines meet regulations. Still, some locals likened the smell to a “carnival.” Councillors decided to arrange a health inspection and revisit the issue in January.
