THIS WEEK'S DEAR JOHN LETTER!
Dear John,
I would love to see if you can help. You seem like you may have been down this road a time or two. I said something that I wish I could take back. We have a new manager at our company. This person is officially not my boss, but she is a manager over a different department that I work with quite often. We both report to the same person, so we are in a meeting together at least a few times every month. When we first met in December I told her she kind of looks like Rachel Dratch from Saturday Night Live. She snapped back at me that she thought that was very rude! I didn't mean anything negative at all by that, she just resembled her, and I noticed it. I wish I had not said anything. Since then, she has changed her hair color and hair style and even started wearing glasses. Now, she kind reminds me of Velma from Scooby Doo, but I'm absolutely not going to mention that. She has been very cold towards me ever since the first meeting. I see that she seems very nice to everyone else. I have a good friend who works on her team. He said they all love her. I feel like we got off to a very bad start because of my comment. What should I do? I wanted to stop her after a meeting to visit for a moment, but she said she didn't have time. Do I just endure this. DO I ask if I can be transferred to Sibera? Just kidding, we don't have an office there, but if we did, it would be warmer than her attitude towards me. Pleas help! I'd love to find a way to not feel like an idiot each time I encounter her.
Signed – Foot In Mouth Friend!

SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
A long-running study suggests the “trophy wife” stereotype doesn’t end at the altar – and it isn’t just about women. Tracking nearly 4,000 couples over 20 years, researchers found that spouses adjust their fitness as income dynamics shift during marriage. So, when one partner’s earnings rise, the other tends to exercise more and lose weight, seemingly as a way of rebalancing the relationship. While traditional patterns still shape who marries whom (women’s appearance matters more at marriage), those differences fade over time. Once married, husbands and wives respond similarly to income changes, with gym visits, etc. increasing as a partner’s paycheck grows.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
The adorable “Puppy Bowl” is coming back. The original and longest running call-to-adoption TV event returns for its 22nd year on Super Bowl Sunday, February 8. It kicks off at 2pm ET, and will simulcast across Animal Planet, Discovery, TBS, truTV, HBO Max and Discovery+. This year’s 3-hour spectacular includes a record-breaking 150 dogs from 72 shelters across the US and the British Virgin Islands, featuring “heartwarming adoption stories and show-stopping matchups”. Referee Dan Schachner returns for his 15th year.
Sarah Michelle Gellar is clearing things up about the new “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” series she’s working on with Chloé Zhao. Hulu ordered a pilot for the new version of the series that Gellar starred in for 7 seasons, and in a new interview, she revealed that the title is “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale”. On a podcast, Gellar said: “It’s not a sequel, it’s not a reboot — it’s a continuation.” Gellar said the series will answer the questions of where Buffy “is now in this world and what is this world that Buffy lives in with her and without her.”
“Saturday Night Live” is ringing in the new year with 3 new episodes this month, led by first-time hosts Finn Wolfhard, Teyana Taylor and Alexander Skarsgård, on Jan. 17, 24, and 31, respectively. They’ll be joined by musical guests A$AP Rocky, Geese and Cardi B.
DID YA KNOW!?
DID YOU KNOW… A cockroach can live without its head for several days. It eventually dies from dehydration, not from the loss of its head. Cockroaches breathe through small holes in their bodies, not through their mouths.

OF THE DAY
Apparently, bricking your phone is the new Dry January. More people, especially Gen Z, are swapping screen time for “appstinence,” using gadgets like “Brick” to block apps until morning. Brick is a $59 app-connected device. Once you scan your phone, it blocks the apps you want blocked…until you physically tap it to unlock. Too many emails? Social media scrolling? Tap the Brick, wait until morning. That makes it stricter than software blockers, but gentler than a “dumb phone”. Its makers say they built it to curb social media use, without killing smartphone utility. Users report more focus, less stress, and easier follow-through on other goals. With competitors like Opal and Freedom emerging, bricking has become a status symbol: a way to flex self-control while staying connected…at least some of the time.
