SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
If you’re as cheap – errr… as ‘frugal’ as I am, your time has finally come! That’s because taking pains to avoid parting with a buck has become fashionable, according to the results of a new survey. The poll of 2,000 adults in the US, split evenly by generation and gender, found that 61% agree that it’s less tacky to be frugal these days than it was 10 years ago. In fact, to most, the word no longer holds a negative connotation. Respondents were likeliest to say that it’s about being careful with money (46%) and avoiding unnecessary spending (43%), as opposed to being “cheap” (23%). Almost three-quarters (72%) agree that being honest and open about being on a budget is more socially acceptable today. On the other hand, 26% admitted they’d rather talk to friends about who they voted for than how much money is in their bank account. Other things they’d rather share than their bank balance include: their medical concerns (19%) and how often they shower (18%).

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been testifying in the Federal Trade Commission’s antitrust trial against his company. Here are few revelations that have surfaced as a result
He admitted that one of the big reasons that his company (then known as Facebook) decided to purchase Instagram was because it had a “better” camera than Facebook. At the time, Facebook was doing a “build vs. buy analysis” on developing a camera for its mobile app, and according to Zuck, he “thought that Instagram was better at that, so…it was better to buy them.” Facebook bought Instagram for $1 billion in 2012.
Zuckerberg toyed with a “potentially crazy idea” to help boost Facebook usage. His thought was to erase every users’ “friends” from their profiles, in hopes that would lead to them spending more time on Facebook, adding their deleted friends back. An internal email shows that in 2022, he suggested “wiping everyone’s graphs and having them start again.”
