SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH
A new survey of 2,000 American drivers, split evenly among generations, found that despite the stereotype of younger generations always having their phones in their hands, Gen Z is using tech in smarter ways while driving. But 54% admitted to eating while driving in the past year, compared to 53% of millennials, 47% of Gen X and 32% of baby boomers. The survey, conducted for Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April, also found that Gen Z drivers were also more likely to drive while tired (32%), and to have a heated argument with someone else in the car (15% for Gen Z and millennials). Need more? They were also found most likely to let a pet sit in their lap while driving (13%). On a more positive note, young drivers were found most likely to utilize car-specific settings like DriveMode, CarPlay and Android Auto while driving, and are more likely to make hands-free phone calls, send hands-free texts, and have their phone read text messages to them while driving. That’s a clear sign that younger drivers are using tech to drive smarter.
BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN
Mickey Rourke was booted off “Celebrity Big Brother”, but he’s not going down without a fight. TMZ reports that he’s exploring legal action against the show for allegedly withholding money he feels entitled to. Kimberly Hines, Rourke’s rep, said his team is currently speaking with lawyers in the UK, and are weighing a lawsuit against ITV, the company that produces the show. Hines says Rourke is being “unjustly” denied a major payday, claiming the show’s producers deliberately removed him on Saturday, one day before he would have become contractually eligible to receive a lot more money. Sources say Rourke only did the show because he’s in serious financial trouble.
Kevin Spacey has revived his “House of Cards” character ‘Frank Underwood’ to help Tim Dillon promote his new Netflix comedy special. In a promo for “I’m Your Mother”, Spacey, as Underwood, tells Dillon: “You podcasters think you’ve inherited the kingdom.” Dillon replies: “Frank Underwood? I thought you were dead”, to which Spacey says: “I’m as dead as John McCain.” When Dillon points out that John McCain is dead, Spacey replies: “Excuse my ignorance, I meant Herman Cain.” Spacey was fired from House of Cards shortly after Season 6 following sexual misconduct allegations, for which he was later found not liable. I’m Your Mother is now streaming on Netflix.
DID YA KNOW!?
Did you know chewing gum is banned in Singapore? In efforts to keep up the city’s reputation for being spotlessly clean, Singapore banned chewing gum in 1992, following laws against spitting and urinating anywhere but in a toilet. In 2004, the ban was slightly lifted for therapeutic, dental, or nicotine gums.

Wikipedia is one of the most popular websites out there – but have you SEEN some of the pictures used on there? Even Wiki’s own editors admit its featured photos, especially of celebrities, can be “terrible”. But now, a group of amateur photographers have banded together in a mission to fix that. Part of the problem is that professional photographers who attend movie premieres, etc. tend to work for agencies, and their work is copyrighted. That means to use their pictures, a fee must be paid. And Wiki, largely run by volunteers, doesn’t have a budget for that. So “Wikiportraits” has been launched, to recruit volunteer photographers around the world, and get them permission to attend film festivals, conferences, and other events where famous and beautiful people gather, so their pictures can be taken, and added to their Wikipedia profiles. By the way, Wiki has so may unflattering pics of famous people that there are actually Instagram accounts dedicated to the worst ones.

WEIRD NEWS
A team of students at the University of Prince Edward Island has developed a new type of soap – made from potatoes. The school’s Enactus club conducted experiments on 500 pounds of unharvested potatoes, and finally came up with what’s now called “Spuds2Suds”. The idea came after a visit to a local food bank, where they discovered that some of the most-needed items there are hygiene products. The potato soap is made by transforming spuds into liquid form, then adding ingredients such as soap bases and other oils, then solidifying it in a mold.

THE LIST
According to a study, workers in small, open-plan offices take significantly more sick days than those who work in private or enclosed offices – and I don’t think we have to guess why. The review, published in Industrial Health, found that employees in open-concept offices take 62% more sick days on average than those with personal offices. According to the study, the risks are built into the design. Those include:
• Increased exposure to germs — one person’s cough becomes everyone’s problem
• More noise and more interruptions — reducing focus and increasing cognitive fatigue
• Lack of privacy — employees feel constantly “on”, with nowhere to decompress
• Elevated stress levels — linked to higher cortisol and emotional exhaustion (which is pretty much the result of the previous 3 points, PLUS the fact that you have to listen to Steve’s vape pen and Kayla complaining about her hairstylist all day long!)
The study authors say that in addition to higher rates of absenteeism, the end results of having a team working in small open-plan offices include lower productivity and morale, and greater employee turnover, especially among high-performers.
