SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

A new study says that excessive use of emojis by guys is an indicator of manipulative behavior. By women? That tends to indicate a desire to come off as agreeable and open. The research from Oklahoma State University and published in the journal Current Psychology, surveyed 285 undergraduates — mostly around 20 years old — asking how often they used 40 common symbols in texts and social media posts. It seems that for guys, their carefully thought-out use of emojis correlated with their self-image and a desire to manage how others perceive them. And women express their need for acceptance by including several emojis in their texts or posts. The researchers wrote: “Emoji use may be related to strategies to manipulate the perceptions of others and to present a positive impression of oneself.”

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Those who go to see Tom Cruise’s next “Mission: Impossible” movie at US theater chain Regal Cinemas will have the chance to get their hands on an exclusive popcorn bucket that requires a key to open it up. The 2-part key is built to resemble the “cruciform key” that Cruise’s character ‘Ethan Hunt’ fights to get HIS hands on throughout 2023’s “Dead Reckoning”. Regal Cinemas made the announcement in an Instagram post, saying that the popcorn bucket’s 2-part key combines into a larger key that opens up the top of the bucket, revealing the buttery popcorn inside. And even though “Misson: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” doesn’t hit theaters until May 23, eBay sellers are already offering the buckets for at least $80.00 each. After allegedly crashing a car into the front gate of Jennifer Aniston’s home and “repeatedly harassing” her for more than 2 years, a 48-year-old man is facing felony charges. Jimmy Wayne Carwyle was arraigned on one count each of felony stalking and felony vandalism. The DA’s office asked the judge to set his bail at $150,000. The Monday incident, which caused “substantial damage” to the “Friends” star’s home in LA’s affluent Bel Air neighborhood, was the culmination of years of sending Aniston “unwanted social media, voicemail, and email messages,” the DA’s office said.

The wife of Jennifer Aniston’s alleged stalker said that he is obsessed with the “Friends” actress, and wants her to be his “queen”. Jimmy Carwyle, who also believes he is Jesus Christ, was arrested after ramming the security gate at Aniston’s Bel-Air home on May 5. Julia Carwyle, who believes her husband is struggling with mental health problems, told Daily Mail he is a “great guy” and he has made 3 trips to meet with his celebrity infatuation. The 48-year-old’s disheveled appearance shocked observers when he shuffled into an arraignment hearing, wrapped in an anti-suicide blanket, at LA Superior Court last Thursday.

DID YA KNOW!?

Pine trees can tell if it's about to rain. Next time you see a pine cone, take a close look. If it’s closed, that’s because the air is humid, which can indicate rain is on its way.

JOKE OF THE DAY

SCOOP OF THE DAY

A clothing company says it has developed a shirt that can be worn 100 days straight without developing any odors.

You’re not truly comfortable with someone until you can sit with them in silence, and it’s not awkward.

The world has been given a look at Walmart’s so-called “store of the future”, and it says the goal is to make shopping so smooth and fast that you’ll wonder why you ever used to spend hours wandering up and down the aisles. The future-Walmart, unveiled in Cypress, Texas, features things like a full-service fuel station, a pharmacy drive-thru, and food options that go way beyond frozen pizza — think fresh tortillas, sushi, Dunkin’, and even a Hispanic bakery section. Need to multitask? There’s an auto care center, a mother’s room, and an app that lets you schedule TV mounting, book tire installs, or “zhuzh” up your gift registry while grabbing snacks. Pickup and delivery are turbocharged too — curbside, 3-hour delivery, and even 30-minute express runs. Also in the cards for future Walmart shoppers are digital shelf labels, and QR codes everywhere that unlock an expanded assortment of products. The company says about 150 of these futuristic stores will be built over the next several years.

WEIRD NEWS

A doctor in Australia has been reprimanded and slapped with a $10,000 fine — for snapping a photo of a coma patient’s penis, which featured a swastika tattoo, and sharing it in a WhatsApp group-chat. The tattooed patient required orthopedic surgery in 2019 after a pipe bomb exploded in his hands. He was placed in a medically induced coma while recovering in intensive care, when the surgeon noticed the hateful tattoo. He then “took matters into his own hands”, if you’ll pardon the pun, and shared a pic of the patient’s private part.
