SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

According to a new survey, more than half of people would shave years off their lives – if they could add those years to their pet’s lifespan. And little wonder: the poll also showed the incredible impact pets have on our wellbeing – with nearly 3 in 5 respondents saying their furry friends have literally saved their lives. According to the Talker Research poll of 2,000 cat and dog owners in the US, 56% would trade years off their own life to extend their pet’s. More than one-third said they intentionally got a pet to improve their mental health, and for nearly all of them (95%), it’s working. Want more details on some of the miracles that our canine and feline friends perform? The survey found that our pets make us smile an average of 11 times daily, and laugh about 9 times. Pet parents were found to be almost TWICE as likely to trust their furry friend over their romantic partner (53% vs. 27%). And just 11% said they trust their best friend the most.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Miley Cyrus’ mother, Tish Cyrus, seemingly unfollowed the singer on Instagram after ex-husband Billy Ray Cyrus hinted at a father-daughter reunion. Billy Ray captioned a clip of Miley singing at the piano on Wednesday, and wrote: “Crazy how time flies. Can’t wait to see this young lady.” The ‘Access Miley’ fan account on X quickly noted, within an hour of Billy Ray’s post — that Tish was no longer following her famous daughter on Instagram. This comes amid years of drama for the Cyrus clan, beginning with the divorce of Billy Ray and Tish in 2022.

Ariel Winter is shedding light on her decision to leave LA. The actress, who played ‘Alex Dunphy’ on “Modern Family” for 11 seasons, moved out of her hometown with boyfriend when the sitcom ended in 2020 after a number of negative experiences left her craving a major change. Among them: The media’s obsession with her changing body. She told People: “I didn’t leave the industry. I just left the city of LA. It holds some not-great memories for me, and I’m young and never lived anywhere else, and thought, ‘Why not?’” Winter stressed that she isn’t opposed to returning, “if I get a network show”.

Tom Brady said he views his 2024 roast as a parenting mistake and a learning opportunity. The retired NFL star participated in Netflix’s “The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady”, which aired live last May. It featured appearances from the likes of Kevin Hart, Nikki Glaser and Kim Kardashian, and each star took a turn poking fun at Brady. But during a recent podcast, the 7-time Super Bowl winner said that he has some “regret[s]” about participating in the roast because, quote: “It was tough on my kids, for sure.”

DID YA KNOW!?

You can’t fold a piece of A4 paper more than eight times. As the number of layers doubles each time, the paper rapidly gets too thick and too small to fold. The current world paper-folding record belongs to California high school student Britney Gallivan, who in 2002 managed to fold a 1.2km-long piece of tissue paper 12 times.

JOKE OF THE DAY

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Weight Watchers recently filed Chapter 11 Bankruptcy.

A study suggests that if you drink with friends, you’ll drink more.

Who’d want to have the boss’s job, anyway? It would seem that as Gen Z edges into their 30s, they’re not dreaming of corner offices — they’re doing what’s being called “conscious unbossing.” That’s where, instead of chasing management titles, many are sidestepping leadership roles at work as a way of protecting their well-being. Translation: less burnout, more balance. A Business Insider report says that unlike Boomers, who climbed career ladders and stayed put, or Millennials, who somewhat grudgingly stepped into leadership, Gen Z is openly asking: Is all that stress worth it? Studies show they’re 1.7 times more likely than older generations to avoid management positions. And honestly? Who can blame them? Many modern managers are overwhelmed, underpaid — and always on the chopping block. Leadership expert Megan Salla-Camina explained that Gen Z is “redefining power and prioritizing purpose”. According to her, they are Ok with working hard, but don’t expect them to sit at their desks for 8 hours if the job’s done in 5. And for businesses, that’s a wake-up call. They should be prepared to adapt, or risk losing future leaders.

WEIRD NEWS

Because it’s something that I’m sure, someday, we’ll wonder how we ever did without it, Samsung has created a cordless vacuum that notifies you when you’re getting a phone call or text. Not kidding. The Bespoke Jet AI now comes with an LCD display that connects to your phone to show incoming calls and texts. Retail price: $1,100. And that’s not all: You can even make a phone call through the new Samsung washer and dryer. The Bespoke AI Laundry Vented Combo washer/dryer lets you answer a call directly on the built-in 7-inch LCD screen. Less “out of left field”, and probably more usefully, it will also automatically add detergent, and when the cycle is done, open its door. How much for this combo of practicality and, well, impracticality? $3,099.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

In a survey, 15% of people surveyed said THIS is the first thing they would do if they became the boss at work. What is it?
