SURVEYS, STUDIES & SUCH

A new survey says that FEWER than half of us would donate an organ for a loved one. A loved person, that is. The study of 2,000 adults in the US found that just 39% would be willing to donate an organ to family or friends. The good news is that some of do have a benevolent side. The poll also found that 53% would go through the pure hell that is waiting in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles for someone they care about. And 62% said they’d put their reputation on the line by acting as a reference for a loved one’s apartment or job application.

BIG SCREEN-LITTLE SCREEN

Rob Ford’s wild ride as mayor of Toronto is heading to the small screen. Netflix has released details of its forthcoming documentary series “Trainwreck”. The first episode, titled “Mayor of Mayhem”, is set to become available June 17. The series will delve into what the streamer calls some of the most scandalizing events that have ever gripped the public. During his 4-year stint as mayor of Toronto, Ford dominated headlines, including a 2013 incident when a video surfaced of him smoking crack cocaine.

“Thunderbolts*” is still shaking up the box office. It brought in an estimated $25 million domestically over Mother’s Day weekend, while “Sinners” remained in second place. The horror film starring Michael B. Jordan hit a worldwide total of about $330 million, making history as the highest earning original horror movie since “A Quiet Place” in 2018. “A Minecraft Movie” stayed in third place, and edged over the $900 million mark worldwide.

DID YA KNOW!?

Laughing came before language. How do we know? Some researchers tickled baby apes, which, beyond being adorable, showed that they share the same structure as ours and likely arose in our common ancestors millions of years ago. Language came about much later.

JOKE OF THE DAY

SCOOP OF THE DAY

Researchers say that that people who jog live 6 years longer than non-joggers.

Narcissists actually enjoy being trash-talked and the subject of negative gossip. According to research published in the academic journal Self and Identity, 15% of people would rather be trash-talked behind their backs than not mentioned at all. For these people, identified as having narcissistic traits, social invisibility is a fate worse than being badmouthed. The results challenge the long-held assumption that people universally prefer not to be the subject of gossip.

WEIRD NEWS

A Lexington KY woman says her son ordered 30 cases of Dum-Dum suckers from Amazon while playing on her phone. In a Facebook post, Holly LaFavers told how young Liam, who has some developmental delays, was trying to do something nice for his friends, so he ordered up the 30 cases, each costing $130 and containing 2,340 suckers. Before shipping and tax, that’s a total of $4,200. And Amazon only allowed her to return 8 of the 30 boxes, so she and Liam have 22 left over, which she says they plan to sell.
